Kikiwest is a trip-hop band formed by Marc Jameson and Jacqueline Gallier. The sound has a rhythmic core of downtempo drum&bass, hip-hop and syncopated breaks, combined with samples from 60s-70s vinyls, standup bass, fuzz guitars, looped textures, flutes, psychedelic randomness. They are all about the balance between groove and melody, using 'pop' elements in a non-pop way, in the same way that bands like Portishead or UNKLE have.

Marc Jameson started out as a drummer in punk bands in the early 90s and got into the darker electronic sounds coming from labels like Netwerk and Waxtrax. He later discovered 'hardcore' and jungle around 95, and started producing breakbeat-oriented music in 96.

She's originally from San Jose, & formed Kikiwest with Jameson in the late 90s. She lent her voice to various local acts and performed solo acoustic shows on indie college radio. Kikiwest was signed to London/FFRR.

@@eliotlarson7404 yes I believe so. We did photo shoots in San Francisco and had a friend make cover art. We went to the Presidio I think. Plus our original cassette demo that got us signed had some cool art by the same guy I think. I’ll see what I can find

We probably should’ve chosen Warner, but IIRC, they didn’t have an “electronic music” division yet, so we would’ve been their first band of the genre. We figured London had a track record and knew the genre better. Such a different world back then.

This is so cool hearing all this music from (originally) Bay Area musicians being rediscovered and posted on KZbin, getting thousands of views/ streams, etc. As good as Kikiwest was, there was probably only a handful of radio stations on the West Coast playing this stuff back then. At our station we played it a lot because a few of us knew Jaq and she was a local (before she moved south), and we wanted to support as much as we could. It totally felt like this album was gonna be a breakout success the first time we heard it, like she'd be touring with Garbage or Lush or something lol.. I think she lives in the UK now.

It might have been at least the peak of post Cold War capitalism and the heydays of neoliberalism. Integrated commerce, new markets, full on liberalization of societies in the first and the emerging countries of the second and third world. Sick music, sick aesthetics, but deeply flawed politically because of its naivety, thinking history had ended, that humankind was one, dreaming of an external force coming and ending humanity. Then september 11th happened and we have slowly but surely drifted into another age of geopolitical strife and a shift in power.

The rest were on a Russian website that only allowed me to preview the songs in full. So, for the rest of the songs I had to use screen capturing software just to get the audio for everything else. So there’s no zip file. If you want the album, you can use KZbin to Mp3. Thank you.
