I suggest using some sort of feature to make the skin looks smoother, whether it may be in the pre production with makeup etc, or be in the production with camera configs, or the post production with some filter. Michael Schenker had figured it out by 1978, a good example is his extended solo in Rock Bottom, then most of the great 80's players followed his steps. George Lynch, Warren Demartini, Jake E. Lee, John Sykes, Wylde. Laureiro Is right, it's all about control.
