This video is on the topic of giving your dog choices on a walk when you have to obey the leash laws. It’s much easier to give dogs choices off leash but when on leash, it can become a little bit more tricky. This video goes over tips for sniffy walks on leash with examples using my own dogs adventures on leash . I give examples of how they can be great for socialization. Dogs are highly intelligent animals and allowing dogs to make choices and explore the environment is a great way to meet their mental needs. There are a few skills that are needed for sniffy walks, such as teaching a dog to walk at a specific speed such as walking or trotting so they’re not just running as they explore and pulling on the leash which is not healthy for their physical movement. I will create more content on the steps to getting to this point if you’re not already there with your dog. If your dog pulls on normal walks you can check out my loose leash walking videos here on youtube, I have a two hour playlist on loose leash walking: • The ABSOLUTE BEST comp...
And if you need more structure to the training I also have a six week loose leash walking course on my website where you can start from scratch and learn the skills to having your dog walk on a loose leash when they’re the type of dog that can be over excited by the environment: dogmantics.com/product/leash-...
A quick video about learning to walk together in new places that excite a dog is in this video: • Be CALM and LISTEN in ...
Some skills that are necessary for sniffy walks are walking on a loose leash while ahead of you while having freedom of choice, knowing what to do if they did hit the end of the leash which is to turn and come back to you, to back up a little bit so that the leash loosens or to slow down. Cues like This way for a direction change, let’s go- to return to walking with you where you are wanting to go instead of them and go Sniff- where you let them choose where they want to go and you follow. As well as default leave it from things they might want to pick up or eat if that’s something they do, as well as the ability to ignore distractions that they are not allowed to interact with such as other dogs and people and animals unless cued to say hello to them. If you are worried about doing sniffy walks with an unvaccinated puppy, another option you can do is ask your neighbors if you can let your puppy explore their house and their yard if the person doesn’t have a dog. I personally would allow my puppies to explore the house yard of dogs that had all their vaccinations and that are healthy but if that’s something you don’t want to do choose houses and yards where there’s no wildlife passing through and they don’t own a dog. You can take your puppy out to socialize, but it’s much harder to give your puppy choices if you’re worried about them sniffing where other dogs have gone to the toilet and wildlife have been.

I love the monolog. I talk to myself a lot walking my dogs, to reinforce my criteria for myself as much as anything. It's easy to forget when I have given the dog more leash and then hold them to criteria that's supposed to apply on a shorter leash, for example. I learn faster when I give myself feedback verbally like that.

@@kikopup I’ve been lucky to find a handful of very low traffic parks where I am, but nothing ruins trying to go there than loose dogs and people who are disturbing things. We live in a bit of a busy area but there’s a shopping center right next to us so we get some relief from all the dogs walking near our apartment by going over there

Would love to see how to teach the cues of close, go sniff etc. we’re working on loose leash walking and hitting the end of leash (from your vids) but I want to let her do sniffy walks as well. Do we need to know loose leash well before these cues?

I love to take my boy (large standard poodle) out on sniffy walks and he’s overall well-mannered on-leash, but he is reactive when he sees other dogs. Can you please do a video about this? I only do R+ training and try to mitigate the issue by turning him around if I see another dog coming, or having him play with me and/or do cues for treats as a distraction if I can’t. This behavior is more frequent in suburban or on trails, but happens less is busier urban environments and in stores, where he acts neutral. I’d love to hear your advice on this topic. Thanks!

Just don’t go in a social media dog training group and talk about flexi leads. 😉 I use them too but of course they can be dangerous for people who don’t have common sense or aren’t paying attention to the environment and don’t understand the possibilities of potential hazards of it, or haven’t trained their dog not to pull

Ive heard of people walking dogs purely on a focused heel and it doesnt make sense, sniffing tires them out! Sometimes way more than walking in general

Hello Emily. Can you tell me what leash you are using with the border collies? For e.g. at 2:54 in the video. It looks like a leash which you can extend on contract but doesn't look like a normal flex leash.

“Alipis telescopic traction rope belt.” I was having trouble imagining the average dog owner using it safely due to the lack of a brake, so was glad for her discussion (near the end) of its dangers and her caveats. Seems the advantage is its similarities to a flexi-lead in that it self-collects rather than dragging in the dirt and mud, or being caught under dogs’ legs. Looks like its main advantage for multi-dog walks is that it makes it easier to juggle multiple leash handles (vs. juggling the large, hard handles of multiple flexi-leads). But there’d be no way to brake a sudden rush toward something dangerous, hence Emily’s discussion of the need to use it only with well-trained dogs, walked in safe locations.

Thank you. I am looking for an alternative to the flexi for hiking. Usually I use a 10m long leash, but it's takes effort to manage the slack.

yes its only 6 feet long and I like them because they dont swing in the little dogs faces like regular leads, I do use normal leads, when i want my dogs to interact with dogs and people. In emergencies I could just grab below the middle black thing. I used them so I could film the tutorial with one hand while using the other to hold the leads as i dont have any sort of device to hold my camera. hehe. im such an introvert I rather do the filming myself then feel like a dork having someone film me in public

@kikopup 23 күн бұрын
you have to take care the black thing doesnt hit them in the face, I like them more than retractable leads because Epic my chihuauha doesnt liek the sound of the leash going in and out. these are silent. I read the reviews if you let your dogs pull on them they break the retractable part. I would not use these for an untrained dog, a dog that can be fearful or reactive, instead Id use a long line like with epic or a regular leash and gather it. I also walk adding a 5 foot leash clipped to the handle of the extendable one. and then it becomes like a self gathering long line if the dog is further away from you. www.amazon.com/Alipis-Retractable-Walking-Telescopic-Traction/dp/B0B12PRHY2/ref=asc_df_B0B12MBR5D/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693270336387&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2355049209067787207&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031292&hvtargid=pla-2065958079290&mcid=316e27d51ba137409c304d85c1a4709c&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwxeyxBhC7ARIsAC7dS39ZB9jIl0Edetqh1IeyJFWxAqe7lm8Lfc-rNfaoadoEd2PZpnPA69waAqAYEALw_wcB&th=1

Random question: did you train your dogs not to kick back with their hind legs after peeing? My dog does this and want him to stop (ruins people’s gardens, throws rocks or mulch around). He doesn’t associate “leave it” with anything but food. Any ideas how you did this?

Actually lol, i tried to capture my two dogs doing it to turn it into a trick. but never committed to it. I suggest have a longer leash and as your dog just finishes going you move fast in the other direction excitedly with a cue to follow you. Id just let the dogs do it in the grass and then if on wood chips be quick to get his attention to come to you. walking shelter dogs i always just avoid woodchips incase for that kicking or sudden idea to eat a piece of it.

I'm getting a standard poodle prospect next month, he will be my next service dog. His name is Carlito and I named him after the WWE wrestler. The wrestler spits apples at people that aren't cool and I want to train my doggo how to spit apples on command. Is there any way I could train this? I know it sounds silly but my dad had a Chihuahua before I was born and he named him after the wrestler. It would mean the world to my dad if I could train him to spit apples!

I suggest finding calm friendly dogs who ignore your dog, and meet up to just hang out at a distance in a safe place while you train- basically creating experiences wehre your dog feels safe and the dogs dont just suddenly appear and disappear before your dog has a chance to realize they are safe - this video goes over the steps for training kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3PCnpaqapiAe5I
