This video is on the topic of giving your dog choices on a walk when you have to obey the leash laws. It’s much easier to give dogs choices off leash but when on leash, it can become a little bit more tricky. This video goes over tips for sniffy walks on leash with examples using my own dogs adventures on leash . I give examples of how they can be great for socialization. Dogs are highly intelligent animals and allowing dogs to make choices and explore the environment is a great way to meet their mental needs. There are a few skills that are needed for sniffy walks, such as teaching a dog to walk at a specific speed such as walking or trotting so they’re not just running as they explore and pulling on the leash which is not healthy for their physical movement. I will create more content on the steps to getting to this point if you’re not already there with your dog. If your dog pulls on normal walks you can check out my loose leash walking videos here on youtube, I have a two hour playlist on loose leash walking: • The ABSOLUTE BEST comp...
And if you need more structure to the training I also have a six week loose leash walking course on my website where you can start from scratch and learn the skills to having your dog walk on a loose leash when they’re the type of dog that can be over excited by the environment: dogmantics.com/product/leash-...
A quick video about learning to walk together in new places that excite a dog is in this video: • Be CALM and LISTEN in ...
Some skills that are necessary for sniffy walks are walking on a loose leash while ahead of you while having freedom of choice, knowing what to do if they did hit the end of the leash which is to turn and come back to you, to back up a little bit so that the leash loosens or to slow down. Cues like This way for a direction change, let’s go- to return to walking with you where you are wanting to go instead of them and go Sniff- where you let them choose where they want to go and you follow. As well as default leave it from things they might want to pick up or eat if that’s something they do, as well as the ability to ignore distractions that they are not allowed to interact with such as other dogs and people and animals unless cued to say hello to them. If you are worried about doing sniffy walks with an unvaccinated puppy, another option you can do is ask your neighbors if you can let your puppy explore their house and their yard if the person doesn’t have a dog. I personally would allow my puppies to explore the house yard of dogs that had all their vaccinations and that are healthy but if that’s something you don’t want to do choose houses and yards where there’s no wildlife passing through and they don’t own a dog. You can take your puppy out to socialize, but it’s much harder to give your puppy choices if you’re worried about them sniffing where other dogs have gone to the toilet and wildlife have been.
