I mix it up a bit with my boy when practicing recall. He gets treats quite a bit, simply because I want the recall to be the bestest thing ever! But we can also just play-wrestle for half a minute, or I will ask him to sit and stay for a little bit, and then either throw his ball for him to fetch, or just tell him to go fool around. Not sure if I'm on the right track, because his recall isn't foolproof when there are other dogs around in particular, but I can see him trying and am trying to bring home the message that with me is where -all- the fun stuff happens.

Love the dog under the sofa! Thank you this is very helpful! Do you have any videos or advice for a dog that pre-emts what you want to do? So she watches the start of a hand-cue and guesses what it might be so she often does something different to what I would want
@kikopup4 жыл бұрын
kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXOzYXx6erNse6M This is a tutorial about reinforcing waiting for the cue, it might help. Some dogs are so fast we must be annoyingly slow to them. My little dogs are super fast too

Fantastic video, and just what I'm needing now! I've a question prompted by the footage of you out and about with your dogs, though: is walking/being outside with a very scent-motivated dog off leash a realistic goal? I don't want to deprive my puppy (and myself!) of off-leash play (and we don't have fenced parks anywhere near) but right now it seems much too dangerous to even consider.
@1316Salva4 жыл бұрын
About what you did at 6:40 where you call Halo basically away from exploring and then release him without giving any reinforcement besides the release. Is that something you are comfortable doing all the time? Do you think the reinforcement from the release is enough for maintaining the behaviour forever, or is it something you avoid doing too much?
@1316Salva4 жыл бұрын
BTW I love that part, it's something you definitely don't see a lot
@kikopup4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the dog. For the two young ones, it would be enough but for splash she is a foodie border collie, and she would prefer food so I would give her food. The other reinforcing thing is waiting for the release so sometimes you get dogs who if you do this too much just want to walk and stare at you... rather than go when you tell them to go. So you can see that happening more with Halo.

Hello there, I have a question. How would you define a well behaved/well trained dog? What are the minimum requirements? I wonder if I expect too much from my dogs since everybody tells me how well trained they are and I know/think they aren't.
@LLewis-vu9qf3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what Emily's criteria is for a well behaved dog but personally I would expect my dog to be calm around distractions, walk on leash without pulling (even better, heel leash free) and come reliably when called. All feats my Pomeranian has yet to master! He's pretty good about coming when called if there are no distractions; he walks nicely on leash but does tend to pull a bit. With distractions? ...well, he basically forgets I'm alive. 🙄😞🤦
@Yuroko13133 жыл бұрын
@@LLewis-vu9qf My mixed Jack Russel is in similar situation. She barks at everything - kids, bikes, snowmen, trees etc. After 2 months of training I can reliably stop her barking and get her to come to me and sit. However the moment I say OK and give her treat she immediately goes back to barking. Other than that she's a very smart and obedient dog. I was just wondering if I expect too much from her. If my perfectionism is clouding my vision.

Another wonderful video! For some reason YT has not been sending me emails when you, or anyone I sub, post a new video! What a cute little girl/Chihuahua. I have a fb friend that has a Chi that is a bit over one. The dog barks a lot and I am trying to get her to train her with a teeny tiny treat when she is quiet for a second after a stop-barking "command" is given. Can you please suggest a type of treat please. I do get emails when a comment gets a reply. If you have a video that teaches the stop barking, it would be very helpful I think. Her Chi is less than 3 pounds! I am going to share this video with her. Thank you very much.

Ah, I dont know how to fix the yt thing. I think try clicking the bell? I dont know. Yes I would work on the calm settle and massage with the dog. Also teaching leave it can be helpful if the dogs barking is directed to a person or another dog.

@@kikopup I have the bell clicked. I think they took out the clapper! lol Thank you for the advice. Could you recommend some type of treat please? I know they need to be tiny pieces. I shared this with her and hopefully she will check out this channel. Thank you again.

@@chihuahuabulldog I feed my dogs a homemade recipe of Just Food for Dogs, which is rice and chicken organ meat veggies and their added powder. I use this to train her but its darned messy... so I will use some of the chicken from her food, but also I use Fresh Pet - which is a dog food that is in the refrigerator which is not so high quality but its great for using as treats because its easy to cut and not messy. For larger dogs they come in pieces that are treat sized but for a tiny dog you can cut the treats up to the size of a head of a pin. Heres a video about what treats to use kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIHCfoyLncmSeLs and it shows how tiny I cut up the treats for little dogs
