@@ThatsNotFunnyThatsSick They said “truly” destructive, not just destructive. The earth used to events like this and the CO2 and sulfur given off by volcanoes. What it is not used to, and importantly unable to break down, are our plastics and other complex synthetic chemicals.

It is a safe distance. IF they were too close, they wouldn't be able to stand the heat. About 2000 degrees.

Did nothing of the sort. It's one thing to have something you can not control such as a tectonic lava eruption. But it's an act of lunacy to personify that out of control eruption as a God or Goddess. A secondary beyond your control. A volcanic eruption is not a human. Not a person, people or Nation. Therefore personification is wrong. Of course you could thow some bones on the ground ordering or requesting your Pele to stop. But as with all mythology that is all it is. (Myth (Old Pagan myth or superstitions of people who did not known any better).
