At 30% rye, Kilbeggan has produced a unique and dense Irish that the gents both enjoy. Big thanks to TITAN of Whisk[e]y Ryan Butler for the bottle. All hail!

With Scotch prices going ever higher, I have moved more toward Irish and Bourbon. I tried this last year and I personally like it. Having consumed several botles, I think it tastes a bit like there is a little Scotch in this blend's Irish lineage. The other day, while sipping a glass, the sweetness came forward and I had the strangest sensation. I swear the flavor wrapped the inside of my mouth until it felt like a grape held between my tongue and the lid of my mouth. In that moment the roundness of the flavor presented itself as having physical shape. I have never had that experience before but it was delightful. I give Kilbeggan Small Batch Rye a thumbs up.

I bought a bottle of this back in 2019, my thinking was "Rye made by an Irish Whiskey company? Sold!" as I generally like Rye and Irish Whiskey. I remember not being a fan of this - at all - and having to drink it in cocktails to finish the bottle. So either 1) my expectations were completely wrong and my impression was skewed 2) this has improved since then or 3) for whatever reason I just don't like this. Anyway, I might have to try it again. Cheers!

I enjoy this whiskey; indeed I will be picking up another bottle possibly today. With the 30%Malted Barley/30% Unmalted Barley/30% Rye/10%? mash bill; this is a traditional Irish Single Pot Still Mash Bill, since in its heyday distillers would add rye, oats or other grain to the Malted/UnMalted Barley mix. At present the legal definition of Single Pot Still in Ireland does not include this grain combo so Kilbeggan can not use the title Single Pot Still., but by tradition it is. Some craft distillers in Ireland BlackAdder etc are going back to old recipes using oats etc. Fionnán O'Conner's book A GLASS APART highlights some of this. His Doctoral thesis is on heirloom Irish Whiskey Mash Bills. He is a well-spring of historic knowledge on this topic. SLÁINTE Mike

Get the winery license and do the mead and vermouth and one day you could expand the business with an actual winery or meadery beyond Crowded Barrel, even it's own company. As much wine as the WA goes through having a winery wouldn't be the worst investment and the more cocktails and finishes we can do now the better.

I really like this Whiskey. I love it has the Irish thing (sweet, butter biscuit, palatable) but its spicier (more peppery) than others including Pot Still Whiskey. I am really hoping to find a similar whiskey with the flavour profile and spiciness yet a little smoother. This is like a 60 dollar whiskey, and a great regular tipple. Has anyone found a version of this flavor profile thats more refined like a older or more expensive whiskey of similar construct. Thanks for suggestions :) Oh and I love the review but I am surprised they didnt mention that the Rye kicks the spice up a notch, maybe common sense I guess.

You boys didn't dive into the single pot still spat currently going on about the amount of non-barley grains you can use in a irish pot still mash. At the moment it's a maximum of just 5% hence which is why that Killbeggan is labelled as a rye rather than single pot still despite the mash bill being from an old Irish pot still recipe.
@markbury20943 жыл бұрын
This is why I love it because the extra Rye kicks the spice up from a pot still. I really want to see like a 12 year old version of this perhaps with some various different cask finishes.
