“Ironically, the womb is today one of the most unsafe places for a girl child.” India's preference for sons has led to millions of "unwanted" girls being killed at birth ore aborted as foetuses. Dr Mitu Khurana, a paediatrician in Delhi, fought to keep her twin daughters as her in-laws tried to prevent them from being born and later, from growing up.

In the midst of this situation, some individuals are fighting to save India’s “missing” daughters. The Insight team speaks to Rajan Choudhary, founder of SRKPS NGO, who has worked with government and police to conduct sting operations to shut down illegal abortion clinics; and Devendra Agarwal, who has set up baby baskets all over the state to save female infants who would've otherwise ended up in dumps and drains.

I am not surprised that India has this problem. Neighbouring China also has a similar problem which is somewhat less extreme. Actually, pretty much every society has some form of gender bias, but in westernised societies,it has been largely solved. Indian girls in the rural areas often get killed like in this video, get raped or kidnapped. The NGO leading raids on illegal clinics is an example of an NGO that has action over words.

They don't want girls because of dowrey system. In India you have to give a huge sum of money, furniture, utensils etc to the in laws as a wedding gift which makes the girl's father almost bankrupt. This hits very close to home. Even though I am American my parents didn't want a 3rd girl. In the 5 years between my older sister and I my mother aborted 3 girls, in the 9 years my little brother and I she aborted 5. I am only here because a tech read the tests wrong in 1973. I could never understand why my parents treated me so differently than my sisters when I asked I would be told "You were not the boy" which made no sense to me. After my brother was born they got worse. One day I clined in my grandmother's lap and asked the same question I always asked. This time she not only had an answer she rocked me while telling me of how many babies my parents killed for being a girl and my mother hates me because I was so special, I was here. From birth I was the family joke. Not having a girl named picked out my father took one look at me and named me Sue after that Johnny Cash song A Boy Named Sue. Now I am 45 and they still abuse me. Since the age of 18 my mother has "put me back in my place" many times. The most recent is I wasn't informed my father was dying. When I finally let them know this is a small town and I KNOW that they invited my abusive ex husband to his deathbed even though he's 3 hours away and I was 5 minutes from the hospital they began damage control and told his siblings but my father's siblings already know what she was once again not only doing to me but to them as well. The day my father's obit hit the paper my cousin texted me on fb to say he was sorry to hear my father died, his mother just told him and I replied "well you just told me. For anyone else that lives this you aren't alone. I urge you to seek therapy. I am so grateful I was able to grieve the loss of the illusion of loving parents and siblings years ago. I have yet to cry for my father, I didn't attend the funeral and even though I know he's buried in the veterans cemetery I refuse to go to his grave. While the location of that graveyard has always angered me for soldiers and their families I do find a little irony in the fact his final resting place butts up to the largest local landfill still in operation in our area. For my biohazard father, it's very fitting.

This is a very culturally deep rooted issue for India and not enough is being done to change it. It’s not enough to just save the babies, they have to actively try to change people’s mindsets also. But that is not being done. For example, if one family thinks “I don’t want to pay dowry, I only want sons. Later we can get a daughter in law and our family can get rich”. If only a few families have this sort of thinking there won’t be an issue. However millions of people in India are thinking this way so of course there are problems.

Follow this thought: If *every* female baby in India was killed, without exception, there would eventually be no women to bring a new generation into the world. I have read of cases in some villages in China, where all the girl babies were killed, to the point that when the boy babies grew up and became old enough to get married and start a family, they could not find any young women of marriageable age, so they had to go to other villages to look for brides.

I am a bengali lives in eastern part of India and our society loves and adores their daughter more. And if you go to the north eastern part of India they have women dominating society as well. I only have one child a girl and i can not imagine my life with out her, she is not only my daughter she is my best friend. I was a 18 year teen single mother it was so hard work being a mother with no help but i was blessed to have her in my life.
