Thanks so much for everyones kind words. This update really stinks to say the least but I hope you all recognize how much humble transparency matters to me on this channel. I want you all to follow along and be able to see that not everything is happy when it comes to keeping animals. Today a very hard lesson was learned but it was LEARNED. That mistake won't be made twice. The injured skinks vet visit was today. Dr. Brown said that he looks okay. I have to apply silvasorb gel to the tail and toe for the next little while but he thinks he will make a full recovery and hopefully even regrow his tail! Unfortunately he did mention the animal will likely loose his injured toe (I suspected that). THANK YOU to my Reptiliatus Patrons for helping me get my skink to the vet! Your contributions helped pay for this vet visit. For more information on how to support this channel checkout: www.patreon.com/Reptiliatus

QOTD: yes...I had cats in my animal room. To keep the males away from the girls. They jumped on a lid with the thin screen mesh tops. They broke the lid and ATE 2 of my baby bearded dragons. I produced these bearded dragons and they were 2 of the healthier ones of the 6 that hatched. All of the cages now have home made lids with pointed tops and strong mesh.

Oh yes. I had a real rock in my Leo's tank. I was cleaning the tank and managed to drop the rock on my Leo's pelvis. The Vet believed she would lose her leg. And she did. It started at her toes and very shed she lost a bit more of her leg. She now has a below knee stump. All healed. She needs assistance evacuating her stool and urea. Thank goodness I am an old nurse and could help her through. She is 5 now. This happened when she was 1.

Your sense of accountability and honesty is refreshing and incredible. There are unfortunately always risks, always new things to learn, and always the occasional fluke as well. It truly is disappointing that this happened..but try not to beat yourself up. You provide phenomenal care to your animals, and go above and beyond for them. Even then, you aren't perfect, and things sometimes just happen. There are always variables.

Just what I came to say but said better than I could have. I'm so entranced with his relationships with his animals and you can see they truly trust him and he them as well. I have never seen a Tokay that did not require leather gloves and some wrestling if handling is necessary. Not this dude he has them approaching him and taking feeders from him. It's knowledge as well as his kindness is displayed in every video. I'm sure this was a horrible experience that really broke his heart but it's so great he shared it so others do not have to suffer the same mishaps. If I'm every in the position to I would love to have one of these adorable and amazing little skinks but until then I can come here and watch them and learn

Thanks for sharing this with us, and making yourself vulnerable to us with your transparency. You take excellent care of your animals, and though mistakes are inevitable, you go to great lengths to make sure they are well cared for. I personally wanted to thank you for introducing me to my now-favorite lizard, the crocodile skink, as well as the adorable black-breasted Vietnamese leaf turtle! This story reminds me of trying to raise newts as a kid. We would collect them from a nearby pond (they were the cutest things imaginable) and try to raise them in a fish tank. But nothing we did could keep them alive. If they didn’t die from the difference in the water (we even went so far as to use the very water from the pond), they would crawl out and try to escape, only to dry-up on their trek through the house. We couldn’t figure out how to keep them cared for, no matter what we did. Of course, that was back in the days before the Internet, and there was basically no information available about raising newts. In the end, after about 10 of them met their doom at our hands, we decided it was better not try to to keep them, even though they were so darned cute. Anyway, the moral of the story is that sometimes no matter how hard you try when taking caring of those little creatures, you can still make mistakes. I hope the new plan works out well, and that your little guy recovers. Can crocodile skinks regrow their tail?
@jessecunningham9924

Btw, the newts were called Eastern Newts, or Red Efts (though these red guys were less common than the green ones).

R.i.p girl. So sad to see her gone and the male injured. I'm glad you noticed and separated them. The fact you didn't hide it or try and blame the reptile is really cool of you. Taking accountability is hard when it has to do with a passing of an animal but i truly thank you for showing us what happened and how to fix it. People need to normalize that even experienced keepers can accidentally make mistakes and the reptile hobby is a continuous learning experience.

I've never had reptiles, but I rescue rats. Had a pair of males given to me, she said they were bonded, happy, friendly. OH BOY! The bigger one was great, all the things she said, the little one? NO WAY!! He was a killer! Killed his bigger buddy, killed another male rat even after being NEUTERED! He was just a horrible nasty biting rat and he lived out his days alone but next to my other boys. I feel for you Dion! I really do!

Thank you for sharing your experience for others to learn from. It hurts when you lose an animal, but you did what you could by giving them the best chance in being in captivity. The killer croc might of had a challenge adapting to being out of the wild (assuming they were a wild-caught as most crocodile skinks tend to be) causing the territorial aggression. Just so happy it wasn't from the golden pair crocodile skink. My heart sunk thinking it was the pair you had the longest.

We’re always learning, we’re not infallible, we don’t know everything, unlike my teenager who thinks he does. This is the real scare of keeping. And every animal is different! And you could have 50 pairs or 2:1 all doing well, but you just never know. So Sorry for your loss Dayyan 😢 though I appreciate your transparency so the rest of us can learn. QOTD: not really bad, but the more research I do the more that changes, I just took my adult beardie to a new vet for a check up, got some great info that I was feeding too many inverts, he has a vitamin A deficiency and was a bit dehydrated. Doesn’t matter what info is out there on line, it takes a well learned vet to set me straight, I never thought of him as overweight, in fact I tried plumping him up to what I “thought” was a healthy weight, but there it was, so dietary changes are in effect. I wish the internet all had the same info, it’s very confusing considering I’m always looking to learn more and it’s not always correct.

I acquired a probable 1.2 trio of Striped Basilisks (Basiliscus Vittatus) a few months ago. As time went on I had my doubts about one of the basilisks being female and turns out he is in fact male as I had predicted, the dominant male being present within the same vivarium suppressed development in the other male. I was in the process of getting a separate vivarium prepared and I came home one afternoon to see a few inches of the newly determined male basilisks tail in the mouth of the dominant male. Lesson learnt, don’t always trust what people tell you and I certainly will be more picky with animals I acquire in future to avoid mistakes like this from occurring again. Fortunately the remainder of the tail has healed up quite nicely and so far no signs of infection are present which I’m very pleased to see and he seems far happier now that he is in his own vivarium!

This is fascinating. These are reptiles, so probably a different story, but rats apparently need to be introduced in a very specific way in order for them to cohab. It could be that introducing a new animal to any group could be a bad idea without much info, which is why we study them tho!. I was typing this before you found that it was male, but yeah 😂 dont do the cohab unless you know what youre doing @ viewers.

Always appreciate how forthcoming you are when accidents happen; it certainly is a hard thing to deal with it. I had a lid on my original fire belly toad tank that had a small gap around the edge that I presumed was inconsequential. Then 2/3 of them got out of the tank and were eaten by our cat.

@khills

Hey Dayyan - I think you’re beating yourself up here unnecessarily. There was no stupidity here, it really was just a bad set of circumstances. You got bad information re Hannibal, and nothing in your quarantine process suggested that Hannibal wasn’t the female you were told. So you were told Hannibal was female, your check seemed to verify this, post-quarantine Hannibal still appeared female, and it wasn’t until what, another week that this abruptly changed. How is that stupid on your part? When mistakes happen, the best thing you can do is walk through the process and see what could have been done differently. Other than the choice to house three together, what would you have done differently that makes sense to apply to your animals going forward? My one suggestion is, in the future, you might want to get in the habit of necropsies for any of your deceased animals, since you do have access to Dr. Brown.

One week ago one of my pair tribolonotus novaeguineae past away. I bought them at a reptile expo 3 weeks ago. They had not told me about worming. “Because of the stress the worms and flagellates could cause a problem” is what they told me afterwords. Always worm red eyed crocodile skinks before putting them into the “real” enclosure. Lessen learned! Btw they die an unbelievably long and stressful death with convulsions and screaming (indescribable painful sound to hear).

Sorry you had to go through that it’s never easy loosing a pet specially ones your fond of. Hey we all make mistakes and unfortunately that’s how we learn. Like you said when we have larger variety and numbers of critters we see this more and it’s not because we have more critters it’s just because the odds are higher for something to go wrong. It’s definitely clear your passion and care for them is excellent but even with that mistakes happen unfortunately so don’t beat yourself up. Just add it to the book of lessons learned and move forward. I have a large number and variety of critters and it happens to the best of us. I just had a clutch of python eggs hatch 8 eggs and only 6 made it. I’m against egg cutting so I lost 2 babies because they didn’t come out in time or who knows maybe something else was wrong but I still feel like if maybe I cut them open they would have all made it 🤷‍♂️. Now I think did I make the right decision of not cutting or should I always cut now. To me that’s the worst part is not knowing if it was something I did or didn’t do and I guess I’ll never know. I strive to do the best by my pets and give them the absolute best so when mistakes happen I truly take it hard. That’s when I hit the books again and try learning even more and do my absolute best to prevent the same mistake and honestly that’s all we can do. I wish you and all your critters the absolute best and hope you can still manage to have a great day bud 🙋‍♂️✌️

Hey Dion, thanks for your really encouraging video, there's better way to learn but the worst always makes us strongest!! Guys so I'm a new Croc Skink keeper and have a thing or two to ask. I have a pair for around 1-2 month, and planning to breed them. Does humidity and temperature matters when it comes to their mating season? I live in Indonesia, which is a tropical country with a rather hot temperature particularly in the summer days, around 27-33 celcius, and a bit cooler at night. I keep their enclosure in semi outdoor because I cant gave them a fully air conditioned room and prefer them to always have an access to fresh air, especially if its raining. I try to maintain their humidity by mist them every morning with a cold water, and their enclosure also has a water feature which is inspired by Dion's^^ But I'm afraid the environment is too hot for them to mate because I read somewhere on web that their mating season comes when it is more humid and lower in temperature. Appreciate any suggestion or answer so that it will make me understand this amazing creature even more guys :) Thank you

I’m still in the beginning stages of reptile keeping but something I feel super guilty about is feeding my first female gargoyle gecko with cheap tongs. She goes CRAZY for worms and roachies and would usually bite the tongs and one day I noticed she had a wound on her lip from biting the tongs and I felt, and still feel, soooo bad. She’s my baby! But Dayyan, you’ve been doing this for soooo long, and we can all see that you’re always doing your absolute best for your animals, you clearly care SO much so I hope you’re not being too hard on yourself about it. I know it’s obviously hard to move on from the guilt because when it’s your pet, they’re 100% your responsibility, but things can’t always be perfect and not all mistakes can be prevented. We really really appreciate you sharing this so we can learn too, thank you for being amazing 💚

A couple years ago I rescued three hermit crabs from a coworker. I didn't know all their requirements but I did my best. Not knowing how deep the substrate needed to be and not knowing that they need meat and are known to cannibalize molting crabs ended in disaster. I found my smallest one without his exo skeleton and claw. I kept him isolated for two days but he died the night before his vet appointment. Still haunts me to this day.

QOTD: Yes, I did. I had a small Chameleon which was fine for months. But one day it startet not eating his crickets. I wondered but didn't really do anything because I thought it was normal. 2 Weeks later it was dead, because he became blind and didn't eat anything. Later I found out that in Styropor (my walls were made of it) mites are housing very often. I didn't new that those mites "attack" these Chameleons so they become ill. I was so unexperienced and I feel bad for that little guy. After that I never made a mistake again with my animals and made sure I inform myself enough before I buy them. That's why I came to your channel, so thanks for all what you are doing. You are very helping people! Thanks man! 🦎

I’m sorry for your loss of two of your babies. Keep in mind that everything is a learning curve. You seem very careful and thoughtful. I’m very new to the reptile community so luckily I haven’t had a huge tragedy, thankfully!! But recently we had a keeper post in one of the groups I’m a part of, that a wire had shorted and basically cooked all the animals in a particular rack. He had photos of groups of dead snakes. It was heartbreaking. I felt so so bad for him. But we do depend on machinery to provide the right temps for our cold blooded creatures. So just know you’re not the only person who has felt responsible for loss of life. Sometimes we can do everything right and have it all turn out wrong anyway. :(

When you start actually having babies you’re ready to sell, can you please let me know? Can you start a waiting list? I know a lot of breeders do that with all sorts of species of animals. And I’d love to keep a couple of the blue White’s tree frog or Dumpy frog. They are just so CUTE. Also I saw a pair on Morphmarket of the crocodile skinks and there’s an adult pair for sale on there. They haven’t been bred, but they are acclimated to each other. Just to let you know!

Honestly, i wouldn’t beat yourself up too much. I know your hard on yourself because of your passion for what you do. Even myself and coworkers have had this issue once a while with sexing and we work in an exotics hospital. Everyone who watches your channel knows that you are always striving to improve the environment, mental enrichment and overall quality of life for not only the reptiles you keep, but for those who watch and learn from your channel. This is unfortunate, and yet part of the risk of what is being done. I appreciate these videos that can humble those who rush or become too lax. I’m sorry it happened to you. But i for one still think highly of what you are doing and striving for.

This is rough but since you’re breeding to increase the CB population and you want them to be good pets, it might be wise to remove this more aggressive animal from your program. Yes, it may be normal male behavior but you haven’t had another skink this aggressive and that’s probably not a trait you want to pass on.

When they are kept together for breeding purposes the lizards adapt same way other geckos might. And some species that are different just feel dominated automatically and tend to take nourishment less likely. Animals have certain behaviors just like humans do and it's important to know the behavior of your animal. My skink is shy. Barks only when I adjust her tank as of to communicate. She barks when she hears us play a video of her barks. But that's it. She eats meal worms I gur load them and that seems to be working. I have clean running waterfall and bowl and lots of hides. Cork bark. Live plants and different features. That helps the cohabitants live and adapt to there vivarium. My setup has accommodated many reptiles. I like the end comments here. Never place the wrong animals together. Trios only work during the breeding process. Not long and closely watched. It is possible. but it's never forever. And always have a back up enclosure just in case something goes wrong. Or might go wrong. I'm glad to see education videos coming about more uncommon species new to the markets. Much applauded and thank you!

I'm sorry this all happened to you. I hope you'll be able to work through the feelings and become stronger from it. I'm still at the stage before getting a reptile where I'm watching the environment of the vivarium. How do you problem solve possible issues with humidity, lighting, and temperature? Right now, I'm trying to keep the humidity more stable and I'm unsure if the LED plant light is giving enough light because some plants who like light aren't thriving while the shade loving plants seem to be fine.

Thank you for the kind words! I never would have considered until I saw someone on one of Dāv Kaufman’s videos showing how it works for them so I figured I’d try. I didn’t really even get the chance to monitor things more than a few days before chaos ensued. Never again. Very hard lesson learned but I felt it was very important to share with the community no matter how embarrassed I felt.

This is an older video, but I have one horrible mistake that resulted in the death of a hatchling phelsuma grandis. I sealed the tiny cracks the babies could squeeze out of with painters tape. I sprayed it down thoroughly with water to try and remove the stickiness. It seemed to work, but about a week later I found one of the babies stuck to the tape. I freed him with some water and olive oil, and he seemed fine and ate right away after. But unfortunately some of the skin on his tummy detached. It was likely a defense mechanism. He seemed ok. But three days later I found he had passed away, and it seems like his skin got infected. I was heartbroken, but have learned to keep baby phelsuma and other hopelessly tiny geckos inside of tanks with screen lids instead of diy enclosures.

Black window screen is much quicker and much easier to work with when covering the egg crate. Personally, I don’t bother securing it, I just lay it down and press peat moss over the top, throw in some plants, and call it good.

Theese kind of things happen. It’s horrible but it’ll at least keep us attentive and we can learn from each other. I was doing some adjustments of my ADHD medication a while back. It kinda messed with my routines and I just completely forgot to water my isopods. Now thankfully I don’t have as close of a relationship with my pods as I would with a reptile or another animal with a bit more individual personality. But I still feel really bad about it. Half my colony died. There were isopods all over the substrate that had tried to escape to survive. Some of them I know for a fact were over four years old. I’m so angry at myself, I’m supposed to keep them safe and provide for them, that’s the deal you make when taking an animal as your pet. It’s hard. But it happens and mistakes are part of life. The only thing we can do is learn from it and do better next time.

I think my biggest mistake was more of a long-term thing. When I first got my hognose, Topaz, in the first year and a half of her life I underfed her, from a mix of her being picky and a finicky eater and me being to nervous to bump her up in size of feeder mice. I am still working on moving her up, but I worry her long-term growth and health may have been affected.

Hello, I made a mistake with my Crested gecko insled. I went into a dark room and sneezing, then an automatic detector switched on the lamp soo gecko suddenly saw a big figure of the terarium which seems the sound, with fear rejected the tail .... We learn on my own mistakes because we remember them. Greetings Super Channel Make some updates about Creste Gecko.

I had a trio of leos in a large EXOterra with a clay cave system and lots of substrate to dig their own holes. Well, at the end of the breeding season I couldn't get the male out since he wouldn't come out and I couldn't dig up everything without possibly burying them all under hard clay. When I finally got him to come out again (he usually comes to his name since I call and tong feed) I found out why he'd been hiding. He had a large, black wound on the top of his head. Of course I took him out and treated it with Repticyn I think it was - over the counter spray on med. It completely healed after a couple of months. It's just a scar now. So I learned not to keep them in an enclosure that you can't get then out of and don't leave the male in past breeding season. I don't breed them anymore.

so a big mistake I made was one with my Herman's tortoises (testudo hermanii). my female is really aggressive towards and bites the male so I had to separate them until I can take the time to train that aggression out of her. However one day I brain-fogged and put the male in the females enclosure after soaking them both, thinking it was his. lo g story short all of a sudden I hear a weird sound and lots of rumble in the enclosure. I go over and see the female go at the male with the males foot bleeding. Took him out immediately, went to the vet, however was told it was just superficial and to soak him daily and keep him in sterile environment until it healed. yeah I always double check now who I put where. I felt horrible. your not alone, sadly it happens and you didn't have bad intentions.

Don't blame yourself, anyone who keeps multiple pets knows these things happen especially with exotics. I've had a few of these situations over the years sadly. Most recently I got two sugar gliders and was so excited about putting as much enrichment into their big cage that I didn't think of possible safty hazards especially since the products I bought were for gliders. My female loved to pull everything in to her nest and at one point pulled the entire swing in and sadly the cord got wrapped around her waist and she must have twisted the wrong way to try to free herself and that's how I found her the next morning dead. Because sugar gliders don't like to live alone I went to great lengths and expense to get the male a new female but since he was older and the only female I could get was just a juvenile I think the stress of her higher energy killed him because just two months after putting them together when everything seemed fine and they'd cuddle to sleep I found him dead on the floor of the cage. He was totally fine at feeding time the night before so best I can think is his heart gave out trying to keep up with her. I was heart broken both times and really considered rehoming my entire pet room but a friend who breeds gliders reassured me that I hadn't done anything wrong (although I'll never use anything that they can get caught in again) and was just extremely unlikely like with this video. Great video despite the sad side but good to show newer keepers that these things do happen so they know to be extra careful but also not to completely blame themselves

My biggest mistake was using an old shoebox as a hide for my pet rats. One of my rats, as best we could piece together, got stuck between the bottom slats of the box and panicked so much she had a heart attack from being trapped. I found her dead after noticing that her sister was unusually friendly that morning and seemed not to want to be put back in her cage after handling.
