Thank you so much for watching everyone! I really appreciate everyone's support and viewership! I would also like to say thank you to my channel patrons over on Patreon. It's times like this that their monthly contributions/support really helps me with the cost of vet bills, meds and more (www.patreon.com/Reptiliatus ). As a responsible pet owner, I can take on these expenses myself but having these individuals there to help is very touching and means so much to me, thank you! I am going to be building/adding another paludarium to the shelf to separate Nova from the T. gracilis. A few skinks will be heading to the vets soon for a checkup. I hope you can appreciate my transparency as I really wanted my community to understand the financial and emotional burden taking on these types of animals can have. That doesn't even include how much time one must dedicate to their care (medicating, force feeding, etc). Don't forget to answer today's question of the day!

You weren't the one who sold sick, stressed animals. You did what you could, Dayyan. To answer your QOD, I had a similar experience with a black-headed northern bull snake. He was a rescue from the roadside up in Washington. He was a fickle eater and came to me sick. He died on me despite all of my efforts to make him happy and comfortable. I miss his personality. His food response was fantastic and he really bonded to me. But unfortunately he started having seizures and wound up on his back in his enclosure. It's hard when you put a lot of love into it, Dayyan. These animals sometimes don't transition well even when they have habitats as amazing as the ones you make and maintain. The testament is that you still have 6 left from your order and they could all pull through. That doesn't mitigate the investment in money and time, or emotional loss, I know, but you know we're here for you.

This is why I think most reptile owners should not have wild caught animals. Dion is very experienced and has a good network of support and qualified vets and still has run into many issues that I don't think many keepers would be prepared for.
@themotions59673 жыл бұрын
@@CatCaffeine I think even even most advanced level keepers should refrain from wild caught animals in most scenarios if at all possible. Considering the the typical rampant health issues that wild caught animals tend to have. The only real exceptions are people working with animal’s for conservation purposes (aka accredited non profit zoos, and field zoologist with established breeding programs) and people like Dion here who are planning on some sustainable private breeding programs which can supply people with healthy captive bred animals and cut down on the trade of these animals from the wild.

I hope everything comes right for you in the little skink world soon. I have a cockatiel who was rescued after being found in a back garden, he is very skittish and highly strung, he also doesn't know how to play and is terrified of outside birds even if he hears them on tv. I have had him about 6 years and never quite got on top of it, but we are always working to make progress within his boundaries n he is a lovely little creature, so it is all totally worth it.

But the fact that you still have 7 that are doing well is amazing. Those are some great odds! As for the question of the day. I haven't had many reptiles that I have had to acclimate other then a rescue leopard gecko that I took in 3 years ago. He was absolutely terrified of people and I had to focus feed him in the beginning because he was just so weak. But he recovered and has gotten so much better over the years. I'm sorry tho. While they are not that difficult to keep and acclimate in the proper water conditions, I don’t have soft water to keep them in, so acclimating them to hard water is extremely difficult, with a lot of things to watch for to make sure they molt properly, and have the right nutrients to breed.

Question of the day: Few years back I had a batch of wild caught badis fish. Was extremely stressful, all riddled with parasites both external and internal..really bad shape from the get go like a lot worse than wild caught fish often are and these lil fish are barely over two inches full grown so they can’t go without food for long periods of time. I think in my batch of 24(?) fish I think I lost 8 of them but the rest was a long process of worming as well as training to condition them to accept a varied diet which involved lots of live foods. After the stress though they turned around dramatically and ended up with a good gender split so managed some success breeding them..I didn’t breed them prolifically but got a few dozen over the next few years I had them :) my oldest I had was in my care for about 4-5 years I believe so had a full, mostly perfect life for their species after that rocky start. Rewarding and heartbreaking for sure, always feels like you failed them but it’s simply not true, you go above and beyond for your animals and it really shows ❤️
@thewinterwoods3 жыл бұрын
If you successfully breed these and sell them to other breeders, then I think morally speaking all of this was still the right thing to do. Losing animals is hard - but think how many wouldn't meet the same fate if captive-bred croc skinks were more available. I am trying to breed Emerald Tree Skinks right now and didn't feel good at all about buying captive-bred, but hoping for babies so I can sell to other breeders!

The most challenging animal to acclimate that I've cared for was a stray cat I fostered as part of a cat rescue. When handled she was just a terrified, unresponsive lump, and when not being handled she just hid all the time. She only ate in the middle of the night, and she was too scared to use the litter box at all so she made a mess of our basement instead. We ended up giving her to a farmer to be a barn cat.

I'd say my most difficult animal, was actually my dog. He's a rescue and definitely went through a hard past. Took a LONG time before he stopped being AS skttish and defensive, but we're still working on it even 5 years later. I could hold a spoon up to him and he would cower away. Blondes with glasses and children especially made him defensive and big/scary guys made him pee and whimper. He's by far my hardest to work through. Reptile-wise, I'd say I've been fairly lucky. My two biggest troublemakers were just my BP going off food for months and one of my leo's who did the same and was rapidly losing weight over the course of a month or so. I ended up using the Repti-Boost too and she was back to eating/ looking amazing in a week.

I had to go back to video 1 when you said you got them from the wild to inform myself on the situation because tbh it sounded sketchy. Now that I have watched that I fully support your efforts to stop wild populations from being taken, will it succeed More than likely it will reduce it. The more important part is this, if you keep these species going and people don’t stop taking from the wild your efforts will be very valuable. When you take from wild populations you are taking genetic variance out of the species and reduce their numbers. If it gets low enough genetic drift will have an increased effect as populations get low. Your efforts would be invaluable to the species.

Red head agama, I've hatched them and owned them from day one, they have never calmed down, and panic horribly when I even enter the room.

QOTD My most challenging animal is my Rescue Yemen Chameleon - Crayon. Got him at roughly 18 months old, his previous owner stopped socialising him as he showed some signs of aggression. Since bringing him home, I'm slowly working on socialising him, he is of course very wary of me and my family but is comfortably tweezer/finger fed (vid on my channel). He won't accept any touching but if we are patient enough he will start walking onto our hands; we only attempt this for visual health check purposes.

QOTD: Many of my reptiles are still skittish, but as long as they're happy and healthy then I'm good! Not pets, but the hardest is definitely baby birds, raised a few wild babies that were in danger and feeds every 2 hours are no joke!

I did this for a baby crow! It is really strenuous work only for the most passionate of people, you did a good thing for those lil babas ❤️

the hardest thing i've had to acclimate were otocinclus, they didn't thrive and died in the first few days, i think that the quarantine tank didn't have enough algae in it for them.

I cannot understand why some reptiles really clench their jaws when you try to open their mouth. A lot of times they end up injured, and still they don’t even understand that if they opened their mouth, they would be better.

Hey, Dayyan. As I can see you don't use any UV lamps in this project? They have no problems with absorption of calcium without UV? Ty vm for your vids, there is so much misleading information about T's on the internet.

Sorry it’s not clear! There are actually t5 6% Arcadia uvb lights lining the length of the shelf. That being said I have kept them without UVB with a fair amount of success so I don’t really feel is absolutely necessary but certainly beneficial. I think all reptiles, even those that are nocturnal, can benefit from access to uvb :) if you don’t use uvb be sure to dust food with calcium that has d3. Hope that helps!

Me and my friend are going to begin breeding red eyed crocodile skinks this summer, maybe we can trade skinks for new bloodlines.
