They didn't believe her, they didn't even investigate which in my opinion is criminal on the cops part because even if they didn't believe her it's their duty to investigate and at least TRY to find out if something happened. As much as I DO feel for victim #1, it was his responsibility to call the police no matter how embarrassed he was knowing there was someone out there who was targeting innocent people. There may not even have been A second victim had he called the police because he probably would have been able to lead them to the house that he was lured to. So as much as I do feel awful for what he experienced, he also seriously dropped the ball.
@kimothy996 Жыл бұрын
Victims are not responsible for stopping the horrible actions of others. Could it have made a difference if he went to the police asap? Potentially, and we will never know. Him reporting this crime immediately does not mean there would have been enough for the police to take preventative actions for the next victim. This attacker clearly was going to do this over and over again. This man was experiencing embarrassment and shame, a common reaction to trauma, which always makes it difficult for victims to report. He probably didn't realize this would happen again, that it was an insane, one time fluke. And to his credit, he did report it. That is a large part of the reason why they were able to confirm the other man was murdered. Victims are not responsible for the actions of others. Victims of violence go through experiences they wouldn't want to go through in the first place. It's a huge and unfair burden to say victims are responsible for the actions of their attacker if they do not report. Let's not victim blame for how folks react to extreme and horrific trauma. We never know how we will actually react to trauma until it happens to us.
@Kristen.The.Girl_ Жыл бұрын
@@kimothy996 so we're gonna ignore the fact that someone else could've still been alive had he reported it right away instead of waiting until the other guy was dead? No way am I "victim blaming" but he literally said that he just wanted to be done with it and not deal with it. So he knew there was a man actively trying to kill people and he did nothing. And now someone else is dead. Yeah, he reported him. When it was too late. I absolutely feel for him but we're not talking a sex crime or something. He was embarrassed for getting kidnapped? He had a duty to report it, embarrassed or not. I do not hate this man. But I do know that there would've been action taken right away given everything he went through. You really think someone would take a story like that to the cops and they just wouldn't look into it? I don't even like the cops and I still know that he had a strong enough story for them to look into it. He could've even taken them to the place he drove to. But he did nothing and now someone else is dead. I get that trauma can cause Shame but that's not usually regarding situations like this. I'm sorry but this man knew there was an active predator on the loose and he chose to sweep it under the rug. You're not going to change my mind that that just isn't okay. And you're not going to guilt me by calling me a victim blamer. This is literally just common sense. If he was embarrassed over what happened it was because of his ego but he had 0 regard for anyone else who may have ended up in his shoes, and oh look, someone did, and they're now dead. Not cool. It sounds like you are referring more to sex crimes in which case I understand the embarrassment much more. But this guy wasn't so embarrassed that he couldn't ask the couple walking their dog for help. He was just too embarrassed once he escape. And I'm glad he escaped. You think this guy thought this was a one time fluke? Who tries to kill someone in THIS manner on a one time fluke? This was very planned out. The dude was dangerous, he knew where he was, and he did nothing. It would be naive to believe this guy wasn't gonna try again considering he failed on victim #1. He had a responsibility to his community to make it known that this person was out there. Be as mad at me as you want but maybe try thinking about how the second victim's family/friends feel. _I went to the same school as Mark when we were kids. He went to Aldergrove Elementary School, in Edmonton, Alberta in the late 80's with me. We were both in the same class, he was 1 year older then me and all the kids stayed away from him because he had behavior problems. I remember in grade 3 I introduced myself because I felt bad he had no friends and he just stared at me. In grade 4 he poked a little Black Girls Eyes with a Pencil and he had this sadistic look in his eyes when the teacher took him away. I'm 43 years old now and I never forgot that._

Never agree to meet a complete stranger in private. Doesn't matter if it's on a dating site. First date should always be in public. But desperation makes a lot people do extraordinarily dumb shit.

I’m so upset the 1st guy didn’t report him to the police. He could’ve saved the 2nd guys life. Who the hell would not report an attempted murder. Especially when they’d been attacked, had 2 witnesses, & had the location. So wrong.

Its not very often my old home city where I grew up being featured on here, however I find it interesting to watch all the different news coverage on these stories to get the most detailed information. I remember when this was happening ir became one of Canada's best known murders likely due to the Dexter connection. Too many people these days are blending reality and fantasy which leads to senseless murders. I'm so glad that nothing bad ever happened when I as a tall slender female used to use dating sites all the time. At the time i wasnt even aware of how dangerous these sites could be and im sure that if i hadnt been as shy to meet up in person but rather used the sites to just chat with ppl that I could have easily been a target. Oddly enough I met my husband of 10 years now in person and not on a dating site which is apparently how many people meet these days. I think its better to meet a someone by randomly bumping into them in your daily life rather than a dating site because with those dating sites people can fake everything about themselves just as in this case however when meeting in person randomly you can sense so many more things plus your not judging based on whats told to you but rather whats actually there. Rant over.

the only thing more insane than meeting up with someone online because you want to murder them is to almost be murdered by someone that you met up with online and then not going to the police afterwards or telling anyone what happened to you.

man only thing i can figure is the first guy was scared of cops seeing stuff on his computer. I cannot imagine being too "embarassed" of being nearly killed (or dating websites?) to call the cops. What a putz.

Thank you to the marine for answering the call to action and for inspiring young people to do the same. To the judge that let that abuser off… when someone hurts someone they say they love, where does they put everyone else. If they do it to their family they will do it to anyone. Get these bums off the streets. We seriously need prisons just for abusers!

I can understand how everyone feels like the first victim shouldve said something, however, every person has their own way of dealing with things, maybe he was still coping with it and trying to get to the point of telling people, however, the fate of the other victims can not be placed on him as he is a victim himself and cant be held responsible for/blamed for processing things in his way, 99% of people who have been harmed, harrased, abused, ect. do not talk about it due to the trauma or fear, as i understand the view of many people, you also have to place yourself in that victims shoes who had just escaped a killer
