I've been studying French since the 70's (off and on, mostly off) and that's the clearest explanation I've ever heard, thank you. I only speak French when I'm visiting my cousins in France, every 2-3 years, so it's hard to retain any skills I learn when I'm there. I'm in Paris and am taking a 2-week course at a school, it's very useful, but the difference between these two tenses wasn't made as clear as your video. Merci!

Little clue. P c has these translations. So j’ai mangé could be. I ate. I have eaten. I have been eating. You go with what works in English. Je mangeais could be I used to eat. I was eating. I ate ( which I know is in the top group but it can be both depending) So don’t be afraid to pick a different tense from that group in English according to your example.

hi, before today, i thought i was well managed the difference, but this morning, i had one online class with a french language exchange teacher, when i showed him one of my little articles, he corrected me by changing some of the imparfait to passé composé. What i want to express is that at certain moment, i was doing sth, but then i realised that in french, they use passé composé to express the action which has passed or was undergoing. But in english, using "was doing" is trying to emphasize that at exact that moment, i was doing sth, i dont know if in french, there's certain form of expression or term to emphasize the same?

well alas that isn't sufficient I am afraid. I spoke as with most preterit or simple past verbs could be either. I spoke French as a child would be je parlais.
