lovely to hear, come along to the live class some time, even just to watch x we do say to comprehend, which is a good word for understand, but the adjective is more commonly 'comprehensible' . Thanks Becka x

It's funny that we seem to struggle with the idea of SUBJUNCTIVE (me too), but we use the word SUBJECTIVE in terms of judgement, quite happily. Almost one and the same. Thanks for the videos - keep it up.

I guess this is a very old video, but it's still very useful. Thank you. Up to now I had been convinced that you can talk your way around needing the subjunctive by structuring sentences to use the indicative whenever possible. That's certainly the English preference. But, you convinced me that doing so isn't really French. To express things the way the French would express them, you really need the subjunctive. Fortunately, it's not that hard, at least from an oral conjugation perspective. It's more a question of when to use it.

When teaching Latin to middle schoolers (and, yes, it is maddening and futile, thanks for asking), I stress that Indicative indicates reality, what's really going on, happening "for reals" but subjunctive means possibility, hope, dream, desires, wishes, and "would-if's" It only helps a few, so thanks for a better alternative!
@logiclanguagelearningFrench
@logiclanguagelearningFrench 6 ай бұрын
My darling your use of the word middle schoolers suggests America so for now focus on teaching them English haha x Well it’s the same. Imperative vs indicative vs subjunctive. There’s obviously difference. Italian is much more subjunctive ready. Or congiuntivo. Etc. want need doubt fear impersonal emotional works. But this is more subtle. It also starts to understand which conjunctives take it. Etc xxx keep up the good work with your middle schoolers. Might I suggest compulsory head shave, a lunge whip and a glass of red wine. for you

Thank you so much for the video. I now understand the main part. I still struggle with one little thing: Why is the subjonctif not after "penser, croire, espérer and dire" ? If I hope that something happens, it doesn't have to mean that it really is taking place.

Thank you good sir! It certainly helps to learn proper French sentence structure from someone who primarily speaks English. Naturally, it's been a challenge to mentally translate English to French when the sentence structure is vastly different. I detest that most of my translations into French sound adolescent but I'm beginning to understand more. Merci beaucoup!

French Classes from LogicLanguageLearning I took 7 years of french throughout middle and high school but it was not very thoroughly taught, and after 3 semesters in college without a class I’ve stepped back into a 200 level (...with struggle). With a teacher who speaks entirely in French and a textbook written entirely in French, it’s been hard to put new concepts together in a way that truly makes sense and sticks in my head.

So when we say in french " im happy that u are here " it means , using the theatre trick, that the actor on the stage is happy but the person who the actor is happy bec is not there on the stage ? Sorry if my question seems abit stupid but neither english nor french is my mother language and i couldn't really get that part while watching the video However i have to admit i think i have understood everything else and so far ,after scrolling the internet for hours, u are from the very rare who actually says why we use subjunctive with emotions .........rather than just throwing the key words bec seriously even after those key words it almost depends on what the speaker believes;the speaker can use one of the subjunctive key word and don't use the subjunctive bec he is somewho certain . So really I can't thank you enough May God bless you.

Really great explanation! Just one nit picky question: since the video is about differentiating between subjunctive and indicative, wouldn’t it also be grammatically correct to say ‘je ne pense pas que tu comprends?’ (One of the examples was ‘je ne pense pas que tu comprennes’)
@logiclanguagelearningFrench
@logiclanguagelearningFrench 5 жыл бұрын
No, even if you are sure of it not being the case it cancels you understanding being indicative. Glad you enjoyed the video. Have you seen my grammar podcasts? Also. if it helped you by all means buy me a coffee ko-fi.com/logiclanguagelearning/commissions

Think is funny. People use it in doubtful ways and opinion ways but grammatically, regardless of mood penser I use indicatively ne pense pas subjunctive. Whether you are saying that in a doubtful way or in a firmly giving a negative opinion way. Interesting fact. In Italian think uses the subjunctive! Every time.

Thank you for simplifying this topic for us! Quick question, why don't we use subjunctive when saying ' j'espère que tu vas bien? '

It’s a common question. Different Romance languages treat it differently. For example it is subjunctive in Spanish. Italian is even stronger, even think is Subjunctive haha.

the way you explained was very helpful but I have a little doubt If It is very clear that I am happy that you come " je suis content que tu vienne" here still using subjunctive why is it so?
@logiclanguagelearningFrench
@logiclanguagelearningFrench 2 жыл бұрын
Firstly, in English it is more common to say ‘I am very happy that you are coming as a single action’ I am happy that you come would be reserved for say a regular event. You come to the club and I am very happy that you come. Every week. Secondly it isn’t the clarity. It is the emotion. Watch the main video on the subjunctive my friend. Want need doubt fear impersonal and emotional. The hypothetical thing often overtakes things

Sorry from recommenting 😂😂 but i have another question Why a sentence like this will be in the subjunctive "Il est toujour gentil jusqu'a ce que tu arrives" For me it does not seem like sb's opinion or someone trying to influence another ,doubt, possiblity,order, emotion or hypothesis . It seem to me like a fact so why do we use the subjunctive in it ? Or Does the sentence simply means the speaker has got some doubts and it can also be in the impartive if he was sure
