@@MarksShrimpTanks Hello Mark, love your content, I am new to shrimping and I just stumbled upon this video. I wonder how this has aged? Do you still put this into practice?

Mark I've been watching for almost 1/2 a year and I just have to thank you for all your wonderful content and my new favorite hobby! Already have two colonies, started with cherries and now working on my yellow neon tank! Thanks again Mark your the best!

I can't see the article that you said you linked about formic acid, but the only one I found says this: "It was found for the first time that citric acid was decomposed to formic acid, acetic acid and lactic acid in the presence of coal ash particles at pH 3 at 20 degrees C, while it was not decomposed at more than pH 5." So I'm not sure it will work as intended. I mean you are right that formic acid is a part of citric acid, we can tell just by looking at their formulas: Citric acid = C6H8O7. Formic acid = CH2O2. But I'm not good enough at chemistry to say one way or the other lol. Very cool if this does work though because I order 10lb bags of citric acid for my CO2 generator and household cleaning but it would be awesome to have another use in the aquariums. Would love to know if this actually was successful and if you've seen any Vibrio since?

Formic acid is a lot more effective against Vibrio out of all the acid tested. You can find it in stinging nettle. Ants also have this. Its part of the chemical cocktail that makes stinging nettle sting. Do you have a link about the citric acid? Im just curious to research more. Also just want to thank you for putting this info out there. Not a lot of information about diseases especially videos. Much thanks for your dedication to this amazing hobby.

Oh I didnt know it was in Nettle thanks for that and no I dont have a link for the Citric acid I was told by a friend on facebook ..If I find I link I will share it ..I might also try ascorbic acid which I have no doubt has alot of benefits too.

I've been having steady die offs in my shrimp tanks for awhile now. Its usually only one per tank every month or so. I've kept a close eye on water params, added mineral stones, varied their diets (not they hardly eat anything, their favorite food so far is cinnamon, they dont even seem to eat katapa leaves. There is no obvious outward sign of anything wrong with them either do you have any ideas or suggestions Mark? ( oh btw they are neocaridina.)

Very informative, as always! I hope to never need this information, but I love that you aren't afraid to make videos on subjects like this. A lot of people like to gloss over this stuff because it doesn't get enough views or might put off customers, but it's so important that info like this is available to help people diagnose/treat an issue they might be having. Thanks!
@MarksShrimpTanks7 жыл бұрын
You are very correct, to me this video is just as important as the biofilm video I just did but this one is crashing ,I dont think people realize just how much of a help this will be :)
@JJJacey7 жыл бұрын
I feel like videos like this one don't get the initial views because a lot of people aren't interested if it isn't an issue they are currently dealing with, but over time it will end up with more views since people having this problem will be searching out a solution and sharing.

This is one of those things that is best prevented before it happens. Thanks Mark for the information. Do you plan on making a nettle mix with this in it or is it best used separate?

@fossphur7 жыл бұрын
You lost me when you said citric acid = formic acid because they're very different - however as per the study you linked: "...organic acids associated with specific antimicrobial activity are short-chain acids (C1-C7) and are either simple monocarboxylic acids such as formic, acetic, propionic, and butyric acid, or are carboxylic acid bearing a hydroxyl group such as lactic, malic, tartaric, and citric acids (Dibner and Buttin 2002; Papatsiros and Billinis 2012)." - Thought it was worth putting this in the comments for anyone chemistry minded who might have also been confused.
@MarksShrimpTanks7 жыл бұрын
No where in the video did I say Citric Acid is Formic Acid. I probably said Citric Acid has formic Acid in it.
@fossphur7 жыл бұрын
That probably is what you said, yes! It's completely different though, formic acid is the simplest organic acid (HCOOH) and citric acid is CH2(COOH)COH(COOH)CH2(COOH), and since they are organic acids the carboxyl group doesn't dissociate I don't think? My point was that your video is valid and in line with the study even if I don't think what you said about formic acid was accurate. Not trying to call you out or say what you're doing is wrong! (all comments are good comments as far as youtube's algorithms are concerned, right?)
@MarksShrimpTanks7 жыл бұрын
Its cool my friend If I am wrong on something I will admit it lol :) And yes you are correct on the algorithms thing all comments are good even if they are bad :)

should i add salty shrimp gh kh+ to tap water or does it only need to go in ro water? :)
@MarksShrimpTanks7 жыл бұрын
You need a TDS use buffers or you will be adding salt blindly ,if you have one then yes you can add buffer to tap water to make it up to a certain TDS ,Like here mt tap is 60ppm TDS so I could add a dechlorinator and then a buffer if I wanted to go that way.

Mark, Thanks for the video and sharing your shrimp knowledge. I have been having issues with my mixed bee tank and what I think is Vibrio so I am in the process of getting food with Anastaxin and citric acid. But I also got some the Salty Bee GH+ Premium and was reading the information on it (www.salty-bee.com/assets/docs/SaltyBee_Premium_EN.pdf) and on page 2 bullet 3 - successfully tested against: Vibrio spp., Aeromonas spp., Streptococcus iniae, Edwardsiella sp., Pseudomonas, spp., Listonella anguillarum, Streptococcus spp. I hope this will also help with my issue. Just thought I would pass what I found along.

I just wanted to let you know I was losing about 4 shrimp per week to what looked like Vibtio and since my very first water change using Salty Bee Premium, I have not lost another shrimp. They all look very healthy and active.

This is temperature dependent so just say your tank was 25c then it could be as little as 3 weeks if your tank is 22c then it could be a full 4 weeks., I notice with Tiger shrimp they take longer like a week longer than normal.

when I can see tiny eyes in the eggs I know they are a few days from hatching out. can be very hard to see this unless the female is right up on the glass. also not all the eggs will hatch at the same time so when it looks like she is missing some you will know that its time to get the magnifying glass out to look for some ity-bitty little babies :) good luck with your colony!
