Hearing this song changed my life. I first heard it in 2012 a few months before my mom died. I listed to this song on repeat all summer in my car. It's strange to think that was almost 11 years ago.

I'm almost 62 years old. I've been a fan of the great and one-hit songwriters since I was 9 years old - perhaps younger. The Decemberists seem to me underrated among my age group - maybe even in general. We will look back on this group in the same way we look back at REM - the comparison being that they're both great American rock bands.

Here I dreamt I was a soldier, and I marched the streets of Birkenau. And I recall, in spring, the perfume that the air would bring to the indolent town. . Where the barkers called the moon down, the carnival was ringing loudly, now. And just to lay with you there's nothing that I wouldn't do, save lay my rifle down. And try one, and try two. I guess it always comes down to: Alright, it's okay. Guess it's better to turn this way. And am nothing of a builder, but here I dreamt I was an architect and I built this balustrade to keep you home, to keep you safe from the outside world. . But the angles and the corners, though my work is unparalleled, they never seem to meet. The structure fell about our feet and we were free to go. And try one, and try two. I guess it always comes down to: Alright. Okay. Guess it's better to turn this way. And here in Spain, I am a Spaniard. I will be buried with my marionettes. Countess and courtesan have fallen 'neath my tender hand when their husbands were not around. . And you, my soiled teenage girlfriend: Oh, are you furrowed like a lioness? And we are vagabonds. We travel without seatbelts on. We live this close to death. And try one, and try two. I guess it always comes down to: Alright, it's okay. Guess it's better to turn this... . But I won, so you lose. Guess it always comes down to: Alright, it's okay. Guess it's better to turn this way.

If anyone reads this... the lyrics to this song ring true to my feelings of isolation, naivety and melancholy of my first sweethearts. My first long term partners were two polyamorous girls. All three of us tried to build this balustrade. Late nights of boundary discussion, oversharing and so much hope. Now, I am free to go. Oh to be in love 😔

Lewis Issac I'm tempted to report you for shit taste in music. The Decemberists only have two really good album's IMO. "Her Majesty" and "Castaways and cutouts"
@loujenkins31177 жыл бұрын
AElun Crombie sorry to break it to ya kid but the world does not revolve around your opinion. Try not to be so negative and disrespectful. Just because you don't relate to the songs in their other records doesn't mean they aren't good. If you want something universal it's best to stick to the radio. I think Beyonce just released a new single. You should check it out. :) I would rather listen to Picaresque, The King is Dead, or The Crane Wife any day; and I'd suggest to anyone else looking for originality to do exactly the same!
@AElunCrombiethefishman7 жыл бұрын
I was joking, it didn't rely come across that way in hindsight, but in all seriousness, I don't like their newer album's because they've become more poppy, more mainstream. Which I am not a fan of personally
@loujenkins31177 жыл бұрын
AElun Crombie Fair enough. I wasn't a huge fan of their latest release either. It seeems to be the way of many musicians; time passes and they experiment with instruments and style to try and stay fresh and relevant. Luckily, there are so many artists out there to fill our hearts and our playlists.
