I'm almost 62 years old. I've been a fan of the great and one-hit songwriters since I was 9 years old - perhaps younger. The Decemberists seem to me underrated among my age group - maybe even in general. We will look back on this group in the same way we look back at REM - the comparison being that they're both great American rock bands.

Just because you don't relate to the songs in their other records doesn't mean they aren't good. If you want something universal it's best to stick to the radio. I think Beyonce just released a new single. You should check it out. :) I would rather listen to Picaresque, The King is Dead, or The Crane Wife any day; and I'd suggest to anyone else looking for originality to do exactly the same!
