+Whoami691 I don't know, man. It's a pain, that's for sure. I hate all this exclusivity going around... If developers want more people to enjoy their games, making it available for every current-gen medium is a great way for players to be able to enjoy it, even if they don't own the console said game(s) is/are made for them! I don't want to buy a new console just for one game. Made that mistake with the 3DS, only to realize how dull and soulless Sticker Star was. I adored AC6, too. In terms of gameplay, I think it's the best yet.

I sometimes wonder if the team that does Killzone saw Yahtzee's videos and made Shadow Fall to show that they realized that their plot was insanely one-sided.
@scoutobrien34063 жыл бұрын
There was actually kind of a theme about that running throughout that didn't get explored much in the first game and was obfuscated in the second game (both before Yahtzee's earlier review) but putting the backstory pieces together it kind of felt like it was intentionally clouded by the perspective of being a soldier on *your* side. It could of course possibly have been bureaucratic decisions that left the Helghan story barely examined but if that's the case the writers were rebelling in small ways with ambient dialogue, lore, and directing decisions in the openings and endings. To me it felt real and subtle as a picture of jingoism turning a dark grey picture into black and white with unquestionably monstrous actions by the Helghan military and their fascist state being very clearly awful but lacking context because the ISA soldier lacks that context. Whereas this game felt like being pulled by the nose to see the same picture and having the message shouted at me in a slightly insulting shift of trust in the audience.

Oh and Vekta belonged to the Helghast in the first place; it's where all the Higs actually lived. Helghan was just the radioactive ball of ore they were mining to pay for their freedom with. Then of course the ISA decided that the Higs weren't paying enough taxes ( _despite said Higs having bought their independence, thus allowing them to stop paying taxes_ ) and invaded Vekta, forcing the native Hig population to move to the lung cancer planet next door.

Not a bear Where did I say you compared them to the USA?
@Mahbu10 жыл бұрын
That's actually incorrect. They weren't specifically colonists so much as a mega corporation that got a permit to exploit resources. As part of an agreement, they are required to send resources back because the Sol system has been, for all intents and purposes, mined dry. The Helghen company decided it didn't want to anymore and launched a surprise attack against the local ISA igniting the first Extrasolar war. They failed to destroy the ISA, however, who called up the UCA who in turn smashed the Helghen fleets and bombarded and blockaded the Helghen forces. I never understood this bizarre fascination to try and make the Helghen look like poor and misunderstood children. They were brutal then. They were brutal now. They will always be brutal. They're supposed to be a Nazi Expy. They routinely have gunned down or executed dissidents in cutscenes and intros and plan all kinds of evil activities. For God's sake, let them stay evil.
@Carbide19510 жыл бұрын
Well, at it's most basic, the timeline is somewhat similar to the story of Germany after WWI. Superpower gets defeated in war, population is humiliated, government and people are rendered poor and powerless due to heavy economic losses caused by allied forces confiscating assets and limiting industrial development. A charismatic dictator brings the population together with the promise of regaining lost power and dignity, population becomes radicalised, state becomes heavily militarised, war happens. But if you look at the timeline (killzone.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline) you can see that, once you get into the details of it, it is very different from the actual reality of WWI. You say that the Helghast have always been evil; they haven't. Helghan corp. (Hc.) won the bid to settle the alpha centauri star system, built up large colonies (so yes, colonists) on Helghan and Vekta, all whilst having to pay taxes to the UCN, partly to fund ISA bases occupying the system. (Somewhere in here Hc. becomes the governing body of Helghan and Vekta; the Helghan administration. It performs the role of a local, devolved government, under the UCN, for the colonies). The colonies got big enough that they needed their own customs force, so the Helghan militia was created to help with customs, policing and so on in the star system. This frightened the ISA because they no longer had a monopoly on military power in the system. The Ha. grew rich enough to buy the star system outright so that they wouldn't have to pay taxes, could build as many ships for their fleet as they wanted, and could charge tariffs on shipping, but they agreed to give money to the UCN to help with the upkeep of the ISA, and let the ISA keep their bases in the star system. Ha. and the colonies got really rich from tariffs and free trade, the colonies expanded and the UCN get jealous. (During this time, the UCN also really clamped down hard on the other colonies it still had control of, taking as much money as it could from tariffs and taxes to build a large invasion fleet). The UCN decides to rescind the main benefits of the AC star system purchase from the Ha., but obviously without paying the Ha. their money back. The Ha. enters negotiations with the UCN, with the wealthy population of Vekta and the owners of companies on Vekta and Helghan urging the Ha. not to back down and lose its freedom. The negotiations end with the UCN throwing a shit-fit, flat-out demanding that the Ha. comply with its demands. The Ha. secedes from the UCN declaring the AC star system independent, the UCN stops all ships from travelling to the AC system, realises that this is hurting themselves more than the Ha. and finally the UCN sends in an invasion force. The Ha. attempts to convince the ISA forces already stationed in the system to help defend the colonies, this fails and the poorly equipped Helghan militia (little more than police and customs) attempts to seize the ISA bases. The ISA forces escape to conduct guerilla warfare on Ha. vessels. The ISA invasion fleet arrives, decimates the Helghan fleet, decimates ground forces on Vekta, arrests Ha. officials and the UCN takes complete control of the planet. The UCN starts a colony to control Vekta, shipping in loyal colonists from earth and effectively making the existing population of Vekta 2nd-class-citizens (wow Irish plantations much?). Some Vektan Helghans launch a terror campaign on ISA forces and the new colonists, so the ISA governor cracks down on all Vektan Helghan (wow Nazi reprisals against occupied territories much?). Some Vektan Helghans get permission to leave to Helghan to escape the oppression, the ISA agrees, but offers no humanitarian assistance, leading to a high death toll amongst the Helghan settlers. It's only after a long time of death and suffering on Helghan that the whole Nazi thing starts to happen. So the Helghast were not always evil, the UCN have been the evil, greedy ones with a desire to maintain an iron grip on their colonies from the get-go, and the Helghast only became evil when a dictator came to power, uniting the Helghan population with the promise of righting the many wrongs carried out against them. The actions of the Helghast are far more excusable than those of the UCN and ISA, and to top it all off, the ISA's top squad of dudebro knuckleheads committed genocide on the entire Helghan population. So no, the Helghast have not always been evil, they were just colonists trying to make their way in the universe until they happened to get too wealthy for the UCN, the UCN decided that the Helghans didn't deserve freedom anymore and the UCN then tried to seize control diplomatically and then by using sanctions and embargoes and then by invading, using ships built off of taxing the other colonies into the dirt. The Helghans then became oppressed and then got taken for a ride by a dictator who exploited the populations sense of injustice at what had happened to them. This "bizarre fascination" comes from actually having read the backstory, and realising that the villains are just oppressed masses, seeking justice, and that the heroes are really the power-hungry tyrants. And it comes from the bafflement that people choose to side with said tyrants. It also comes from the fact that I think that if Sony hadn't poured money into Guerilla, turning the Killzone franchise into little more than a technology demonstrator, then the 2nd game and other sequels may have had an actual, morally-complex story, where you play as the Helghast, defending your homeworld from invasion and the player gets to see things for what they really are; your real homeworld has been stolen from you, you've been confined to a cancerous, barren, slum-world, you're ill equipped, outnumbered army has failed to take back what is yours, and now the super-wealthy, well-equipped mass of dudebros that is the ISA have come to take over and oppress your people further, thinking that they're the heroes of this tragic story. But no, instead of a story like that, you play as said dudebros, running around bro-hugging and yelling at stuff with their stupid haircuts, and blowing an impoverished world to smithereens, all whilst completely unaware of the tragedy that's going on and the fact that they're the oppressor, with the moral justification from the developers being " _Luk! Dey da Nat-zees and dey got red eyes! So dey eevil, shoot dem!_ "

I'm surprised you didn't encounter an issue I encountered. As the resident panzy I naturally chose the easiest difficulty. I couldn't get past the first level because I died way too many times for the game to be fun. Enemies could see me just from around the corner, I couldn't move anywhere without being seen, and when I did die more often than not I respawned right in front of the people who killed me. And that's not even accounting for the orange and blue HUD against a background of orange and blue.

I've never really gotten into the killzone series, particularly because playing single player fps is dull in my opinion and in the case of the killzone I played to try it out playing local multiplayer resulted in us focusing each other down more than the enemies since it was more often us getting in our own way.

The funniest part? He never once flat out says the game is shit. He did it with Knack, with Ryse, with... well, let's face it, the vast majority of games. And it's funny because Shadow Fall /is/ a very fun game, at least by launch title standards. That said... I dunno. Normally I try and justify getting a multi-hundred dollar console by defending it or getting loads of games for it and enjoying the crap out of those. But for whatever reason, I find I'm doing that far less then I ever had to with the PS3 or Xbox 360- ... well, the PS3 at least. Xbox had utterly gripped me with Halo 3 right from the get go. And the wii cost 200 bucks when I got it, and it served it's bloody purpose: Play Twilight Princess, play Smash Bros. That's it. The fact that it could double as a Game Cube whenever my nostalgia levels got too low was a damned good plus. But I digress. What I'm trying to say is I don't believe the PS4 is all the clunky. The backwards compatibility issue is being solved in the summer of this year, which is understandable given the fucking state of the business we're in, where pushing out a console in time for Christmas means trimming back some features for a later date. The Xbox One? No clue yet, don't have any space for the thing but at least my fucking PS4 doesn't take ages with updates like my PS3 did so I think it's official; the Xbox 360 became the PS4 and the PS3 became the Xbox One. And you know who gives a fuck? Not me, because I own bloody both! But if you are one of the people who do (like Yahtzee) then I feel for you. Because chances are, you'll be forced to suffer through whatever bits and problems you consider to be faults while the ones who don't sip lemonade and enjoy their beautiful baby/ies.

These games aren't that complicated the background story kind of is but in the end the games are really black and white. I personally hated the scripting of the whole game, there wasn't any emotion in the beginning when his dad got shot TWICE

It seems that its becoming a growing trend for games to have piss-poor or half-assed endings to leave room for another boring sequel no one really wants or cares for. And even if they give a good ending, gaming companies will either give an unneeded sequel set a decade into the future, give an origin story game or just reboot the entire franchise so they can make the same games all over again. Sony and Microsoft are trying to copy something Mario has made his trillions on

I liked this review. But it doesn't justify forcing me to buy a clunky new console with no backwards compatibility. (That's why I have the Wii U.)

I honestly wasn't too impressed by this game. For me it was beautiful, solid and tight, but bland and prolonged at the end. I would probably give it 72/100%. Good, but no cigar.

I think your all forgetting that the vectans destroying the hellgast planet was an accident. They were trying to kill the hellgast leader on a ship that had a superweapon on board that exploded when they destroyed the ship.

The helgast blew up their own planet with a weapon they were planning to blow up earth with.

You know what i just realised? They didn´t put backwards compatibility because they knew if they did they couldn´t shove as many remasters down out throats.

they should make the next game where you play as a member of an inter planetary Police force that takes down the leaders of the Vectan Army

Nice. Damn game is just another Modern Military Shooter with bad plot. Killzone 1 was actually good and had no "aim down sights" crap or anything..
@Madarch-i3b10 жыл бұрын
Killzone 2 and 3 had decent plots(well... characters and acting, more like) Killzone Shadow Fall is definitely the weaker Killzone.

yep. just agree with this one. not bad, played it all the way through without getting too bored. haven't played it since. For me that's the benchmark... will I play it multiple times; that's the sign of a genuinely good game..
@travelingspartan203510 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the story tried to have some character development, but it honestly just doesn't make quite enough sense. Using the O.W.L., however, despite the control for it, is not only useful but fun, and its actual design is pretty kickass. We don't see enough Vektan guns (especially since there's at least three Helghast rifles between which I can't tell the difference), but I don't mind that much since your standard rifle is just so cool
@kylerollins648310 жыл бұрын
I hate how they didn't give some super weapon. Like in KZ3 there was a gun that liquified people into a bloody mist and in KZ2 there was a gun that shot electricity that locked onto people and had infinite ammo

The track pad... thing... seems to have basically taken over as the now missing select button (mr share button is wearing its skin). That's all well and good I suppose. The only game I found actually utilizing it more was gta where a quick swipe while driving changes the radio station Fuckin gold
@GuyWithBadHair10 жыл бұрын
The touch pad should've been on the back of the controller, like the Vita.
