THIS is true grunge. Kim’s voice perfectly matches the nature of this song and dramatically uplifts the already amazing song with some much needed emotion that I felt was missing in the original. I hate that most people diss on her because of how she sings. Kurt would have loved this and was by far the best performance of the night imo.

Let's get this straight, she didn't go up there to do a lame impersonation of Kurt Cobain. She went up there to do Kim Gordon singing Aneurysm. She did it her way and from what I've heard, put her own anger and misery over her split with that tosspot Thurston Moore into it. Kudos to her

She also was close friends with the dude (Kurt) - she really cared about him, and he clearly looked up to her, being both a pioneering woman in rock music, and ~12 years or so older than him at the time, and very skeptical of Courtney near the end of his life (which he also was, re: Courtney's clearly emerging narcissism and greed). Having met Kim myself in recent years, after a friend of mine started opening shows for her solo stuff, and not to brag at playing one with all 3 of them (my friend, Kim and myself) - I can attest to Kim being the same super chill, genuine person I'm just assuming Kurt saw all those years ago.

I was there and this was my highlight of the night. I find it funny how people criticize this, as this was the most punk rock thing that has ever (and probably will ever) go down at the Hall Of Fame... I saw Nirvana several times, and do this. She owned this. Big mutual influence between SY and Nirvana. There is a great story told by Kim and Thurston of when Nirvana opened for them on tour (pre-Nevermind), and they were watching Kurt stage dive at the opening of a song, crowd surf around the room, then get dumped on stage right before it was time to rip into the first note. So they look at each other like "whoah, how do we compete with that?" So that was when SY started recording some heavier, less ambient songs like "kool thing", "mildred pierce", and "goo"...

Jesus, I felt like I was back in the early 90s watching this on MTV for a second. Fucking awesome! Kurt would have absolutely loved this...Brings back the true essence & feel of that time period. It wasnt about perfection or sounding polished. So many dont understand.

She took a fall that most others would have shrunk in embarrassment and turned it into such a wonderful primal wail that is pure punk rock. This performance continues to be inspiring a decade later.

spongebobzzang The fans were up in the nosebleeds. We were totally going crazy with these performances! The gussied-up VIPs on the floor had their own agendas or were only there for a specific inductee. Trust me...we were in ecstasy! It was a very rare event, and it’s a night we will never forget.

Anybody hating on this doesn't know Nirvana. Out of all the vocalists that night, Kim actually channelled Kurt's energy. She actually was a part of Nirvana, the other ones were just there. Not to mention that Kurt absolutely worshipped Sonic Youth and wanted to be Kim.

This was probably the only tribute that Kurt would be liked. Nirvana totally admire Sonic Youth, in his time. Two legendary bands with one Thing in common: they never wanted to be a part of a movement, or imitate another bands. Both just wanted to be straight with Their love to independant punkrock music.
