In a previous video, I purchase an Aloe and decided upon a mold to make a planter. Here in this video, I will show you how I made that hypertufa planter and a few other hypertufa pots.
For all these pots made in this video, I used just 1 gallon of Portland cement, 1 gallon of vermiculite, and one gallon of peat moss. That really makes a lot of hypertufa mix for a very large planter!
It's great to design a pot to match your plant!

I love looking at other people’s work so I can see what to do and not to do - plastic in the bowls so it will come out quickly. I will be doing this. Maybe even do a video. Thanks Kim.

Hi Kim, just watched this. Nice Aloe pot! I have a suggestion. When trying to pack your newly added dirt, take a tip from Bonsai enthusiasts and use a chopstick to 'poke' the dirt in. You will be amazed at how many air pockets you will fill in. Especially since you freed up some roots. I like your work, keep it up. God bless

That sounds like a great idea. I have some chopsticks but never used them to poke the soil like that. Thanks.

What is the purpose of leaching the pots? You do a very nice job. Thank you.
@KimsGardensandHome
@KimsGardensandHome 4 жыл бұрын
This is to remove the alkaline from the pot before it is planted with soil. Some alkalinity will leach from the portland cement into the soil and possible kill the plant unless you rinse or leach it all out.
@margaretsims4344

Hi Kim. Do you leave your pots wrapped in plastic for 30 days to cure before you leach them.?
@KimsGardensandHome
@KimsGardensandHome 4 жыл бұрын
I usually leave them wrapped for the cure about a week or two, but hardly every 30 days. That would just happen if I forgot one wrapped over under a tree or something. In my opinion, it is as good as its going to get for a planter in a week or two. When you have a driveway poured with tons of concrete, you can park a car on it in 2 days...right? I am sure my little pot can hold soil and a little plant. JMO

Mix too wet; a bit dryer and you won't have slumping problems. Also will be a stronger pot.

Kim, I watched a different video where you used "Flex Seal" to make it less porous. Did it work out or did you end up using something else to seal the hypertufa pots? Thanks!
@KimsGardensandHome
@KimsGardensandHome 4 жыл бұрын
I used the Flex Seal and it definitely sealed the pots. So far the few I did seal have done well. They do hold the pot from drying out as quickly, but I still have drainage holes in them. Not using them as bird baths or anything like that.

Do you apply some kind of oil inside your mold before you put in the h,ypertufa mix?
@KimsGardensandHome
@KimsGardensandHome 5 жыл бұрын
I do put some Pam spray or cooking spray oil inside. I even use just simple plastic wrap which always seems to come out easily. Sometimes the oil coating just doesn't release as well. Plastic always does. Just something as flimsy as rolled plastic wrap, like what you would cover a leftover in the kitchen. Works for me.

Will the superficial leak water,can you use them indoors? Thank you love your videos!
@KimsGardensandHome
@KimsGardensandHome 5 жыл бұрын
Since these planters are porous, they can ooze water very slowly, enough to damage wood furniture for instance. I have put them on clear plates or clear plastic drainage trays when I have them inside on furniture.

Is it ok NOT to make a drainage hole in hypertufa pots? I'd like to make some for hanging indoor plants. What are they like when watered? does the water soak through? Thanks!
@leneecasteel2541
@leneecasteel2541 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tatyana, what do you do now with the hanging pots you have? I have to put shallow bowls under mine. I also water from below, I just keep filling my bowls up after I let them dry out.
@KimsGardensandHome
@KimsGardensandHome 5 жыл бұрын
If you don't want a hole, you wouldn't have to, but the hypertufa is porous and could be furniture moist as the water slowly filters through the walls. Put it on a tray or set the pot in a tray for any leaking. I would worry about the floor and any danger will water puddling underneath and someone slippin. Use a saucer inside the hanger?

@@KimsGardensandHome do you know if I could use these for semi hydroponic houseplants (eg Leca)? If I sealed it completely on the inside?
