The thing is, [edit: many parts of] Indian society _is_ very patriarchal and has a lot of misogyny. That’s true. However, you can’t come in as a foreigner demanding to be an exception to the rules. That’s not how this works. Social changes need to come organically from within the culture, and even if she’s right about the unjust expectations of women in India, she just comes off as entitled and unprepared. TJ, for his part, is incredibly scummy for not informing her of the cultural expectations BEFORE she touched down in India.

One of the things about cultures like this is that women have power, just not in the ways that Americans would like or understand. You'll see that in the house the women have a lot of control and when it comes to the children they have even more. I think its a little misguided to see things in such a flat or simplistic way (not you, just generally in our society). If its not the way we see it, then it must therefore be bad or wrong. That's not a good way to engage with people from other cultures, as it comes off as western culture is better, and no one will accept that. Nor is it necessarily true. I had to make this adjustment myself, and while I don't like or agree with the way things were done in my non US family, I understood it. I adopted the parts that worked for me and was flexible with the family when I wasn't going to do something, but didn't want them to think I thought I was better than them. Just different.

@@rileys6182 exactly. The way Kimberly scuffs at Yash for trying to explain their ideas is what's really rubbing him the wrong way. She comes into someone's country, culture and home and demands to be treated in a way they are not used to.

Not entirely true. Some parts of Indian society are matriarchal. Nonetheless one is expected to respect their elders and family members. Usually a daughter in law to be is expected to be polite and respectful. They’re really letting Kimberly get away with a lot of her bad behaviour because she’s foreign. Had an Indian girl spoken to the brother like that they wedding would have been called off then and there. It’s really baffling how entitled these Americans are.

The American women on this show are always trying to traffick the men from their cultures and families. It’s amusing but mostly soooooooo creepy and it’s not engaged with enough. The America men on the other hand always seem more open to assimilating or somewhat integrating … I assume it’s because of the benefits of those cultures as men vs for women it imposes more restrictions to their “unbridled” freedom which is often just rudeness/disrespect and a woeful inability / unwillingness to read the room and temper your expectations accordingly or go the F home.

I don't think Kimberly has any idea how long the rest of her life might be. I don't think she will be in India with TJ for the rest of the year. This is obviously not going to work. As an Indian man, I feel really bad for Kimberly. TJ manipulated her because he was not honest at all with her. People like TJ like to justify themselves by saying it's traditional, cultured, for the family etc. I see that as total bullshit. Regressive cultural practices should not hold any value in my opinion. Marriage is indeed a partnership. Yash's response to Kimberly's assertion that marriage is a partnership is not a great response. He is supposedly trying to take a moral and cultural high ground by claiming to be more cultured. And the supposed contrast with the West is also silly. I am sure people in the West break still have contact with their families after marriage right? Everywhere your family members are there for you in the good and the bad right? Sure there might be different boundaries but surely family support (unless there are obvious tensions and issues to resolve) is still very much present. Sure Kimberly could have appreciated some things about the apartment but I still feel the meltdown was justified. Change is scary and it can be easy to crack under it. I am currently in a foreign country and thought I would crack coz I am afraid. I did not and am settling in. Kimberly however is going for marriage!!!!. That's a whole different league. I would have been surprised if she did not crack. TJ should have shown her that she is loved and cared for and everything will be fine. That's what it means to be a spouse, isn't it? That is what he signed up for. I think it also would have been nice if Kimberly's parents could have stayed in a nearby hotel, especially since the wedding was close. That way she has people to comfort her and be in her corner. I wish I could say that this is not representative of the entirety of Indian males and Indian culture. Now since India has a huge population you cannot really generalise. You will find conservative and progressive people. However, this attitude is still quite prevalent from my own experience. I would like to think my parents have taught and raised me to be good when it comes to relationships today but I am sure I would fall short in many areas as well. I hope Kimberly realises she does not owe anyone anything by staying in India and does not have to prove anything. She should leave for better pastures.

How can this possibly go right? She thinks a dream led her straight to her "DM Requests", and he thinks he manifested her into existence. She expects the same life in India as she had in Alabama, and he (et al) expect her to trade in her entire identity and come out a native-born Indian woman. This is why reality TV exists; it's always funner watching these people try to futilely push a round peg into a square hole, than it is to try it yourself. Tip: When you're researching a new country/culture you want to move to and start over in, your research shouldn't end with pseudo-spiritual Instagram influencers who visited India for two weeks.... That may work for a trip to Joshua Tree or a weekend at Coachella, but cultures - especially in India - are as vastly unique as they are deep.

If your future brother in law is talking to you like this and your husband isn't stepping up for you do not marry him. You will always be last and everyone else will come first before you. Yes, they are right, American culture is quite vulgar when compared to others but their behavior was so much worse. Calling your future brother's fiancee stupid is wild to me.

The truth of Indian culture being misogynist is nowhere in the middle. They are. Women are raised to shut their mouths and basically be slaves. Kimberly and TJ are equally idiotic for even getting together. They both expect each other to change the core of who they are. If you want that person to change everything about themselves, why bother? Tj's bro was disrespectful and he needs to mind his business. If Kimberly stays there, they need to move out. Otherwise after the cameras stop rolling, it will become abusive.

I don't think anyone was saying that it doesn't exist. There is going to be a larger number of families that live like this in certain areas of India, but that is not the sum of India. 1.4 billion people live there, so 17% of the entire world's population. There is bound to be diversity. The original poster is just pointing out that TLC is stuck in portraying India that way because it fits the idea Americans have in their head about India. I have had to have so many conversations about this with people when I say I am dating someone from India. As for whether this lifestyle is meant for an American woman or not.. that's completely up to the woman. Individualism in America is going to shape how we feel and think about things, just like how Collectivism is going to shape how Indians view things. Until Kimberly and TJ realize they see the world from two totally different perspectives, it's going to be a struggle. You can find middle ground, but you have to have a lot of conversations about life and you have to be transparent with each other. TJ should have been upfront about his expectations of Kimberly as a wife. She should have been allowed to choose if she was okay with that before marriage since she wasn't brought up in the culture. Hiding it until after they are married is going to cause horrible fights. Kimberly is not realizing that family is everything to TJ and that while he might take her side right now with his brother, that man will never be completely comfortable and happy again so long as he is against his family. That is a huge mistake. They need to do a lot of work on themselves and with each other if they have any hope for this relationship to survive.

I agree and disagree with you. The reasons why passport women search for men outside is because they believe foreign men are better providers and husbands than American men. That's really the fault of our society. So many American men refuse to be mature, responsible adults, capable of equal workload and caring for children. My generation and the younger have so many men expecting women to financially support them, emotionally support them, bare their kids without expecting the man to care for the kid. As for passport bros, well they are those type of men. They seek women who are submissive and meek, the opposite of what western women are. Passport bros and passport women get a rude awakening every time; the passport women realize the foreign man has ancient gender views and passport bros realize that the foreign women aren't as meek as they thought. They are women full of anger and opportunity, ready to divorce and shit on them once they reach the west where they can finally be heard.

Women are mostly the decision makers of the family, maybe professionally women still have a long way to go but mothers are treated as Queens, everyone listens to them. It is also true women take on more household responsibilities than American women but that's how we have preserved out familial structure and culture. Kids are protected, fed and not left with nannies or daycare (complete strangers). Men go and earn and women raise families, it is not an ancient practise, it is the practise that works for us. And for those women who choose to go to work, their in laws take care of the children. It is a supportive environment.
