Oop 😳😆 Yeah, it's still kind of old school here in India, but getting more progressive. But yes, the mom usually carries the entire household on her back. It just depends on the specific family, tho. For example the South Indian fam I married into is actually super progressive, prob more progressive than my own fam in KY! (Bc husband's fam is more educated than mine lol) So they don't expect me to do everything my MIL does, esp right when I arrived here. It isn't a one way street, tho. Everyone in the fam pulls their weight. So if you're not working & staying at home, then it's kind of expected that you take care of the chores. Same mentality as the US, imo. If you can afford it tho, you can get a maid service. That's still normalized here & I was shocked by that. India still has a "middle class" tho so many ppl can afford it. Btw, most families can survive on one income still, unlike the US. 🥲 So hubby usually works & wife manages the house. All that to say, she's not completely stuck ☺ His fam seems nice & progressive enough for them to approve of a love marriage, so that bodes well for her! I honestly think it's a storyline from TLC, bc they'd naturally talk about how they'd live together beforehand. (TLC loves its American exceptionalism after all 🥴) Also a spousal VISA doesn't allow you to work. If she wants to work she'd just have to apply for the proper VISA. There's def options! I'm curious to see more from this couple & how they navigate all this, bc I lived through the same thing lol. Sorry for the novela lmao.

I just wanted to provide some context. Indian culture often gets generalized and grossly minimized by the West to fit a single sentence to describe it if they can help it. But people fail to acknowledge it's literally a whole ass subcontinent with its roots dating back to the earliest civilizations, oldest religions and thus understandably you'd have a plethora of ethnic subcultures and diverse heritage that are still practiced today. TJ's culture isn't unanimously "indian". Hell, I'm Indian & absolutely cannot resonate with his/his family's "rules". My grandma would headshot me with a slipper if I dare omit garlic or onion from any cooking. My dad would bury him in our backyard and forbid our dog from digging him up if he found out I was expected to play Cinderella for the rest of my married life. Which brings me to my point that anyone looking to date Indian, know that we're all very unique in our beliefs and you should really get to know each of us and understand our backgrounds (and what you're signing up for) when pursuing any commitments whether it's friendship or relationship. Stereotypes do exist and you may meet a handful who live up to them but they're not ALL INDIANS. With every culture (not just Indian mind you) there's always a hint of generational trauma, religious bigotry, toxicity and misogyny which does need to be called out and changed for the better. Many Indians today are working towards raising awareness and making strides towards improving this for future generations. So yeah. We're not perfect, we're not claiming to be perfect, we can do better and we all don't fit in a box. ✌️

Perfectly said! My father is Punjabi and would NEVER let me be a submissive in my relationship. After all, I’m HIS daughter so why would he think his child has less value than someone else’s? In fact, I was always treated special in the family just for being a girl, which is not something you often hear. And, yes, onions are a necessity for every Indian dish in our family. I happen to dislike onions, so now I’ll be looking for those Indian recipes without onions.

The no onion and garlic thing is very dependent on region and caste (the importance of caste also varies by region even though it’s antiquated and gross but I digress). My parents’ families who live in coastal South India LOVE their onion and garlic. Growing up in the US, anything my parents made, regardless of cuisine, was filled with onion and garlic. That’s the most I can empathize with Kimberly, though. It’s giving entitled American. Edited to add: I wouldn’t date TJ, though. Garlic naan FTW also I’m not really sure if it’s in titled American. I’ll have to watch more of the videos and see or if it was that TJ did what he’s doing with everything else that he won’t be honest about and brushing concerns under the rug/not telling her shit he knows what upset her. Like I don’t know I’m sure there were many many conversations about their home and many chances to tell her that they had no windows yet or that some of the things she’s used to might not be able to come to fruition. Maybe if he was telling her about them on the phone or whatever and she was throwing a tantrum absolutely but when someone makes you think everything‘s OK and then you take a 72 hour trip and realize you were most likely lied to or had your concerns rushed away when they were legitimate I would probably flip the fuck out to. Again past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior, so I’m not sure why were acting like he was mad upfront, and she knew what she was getting into.

I definitely agree that the whole "she has to be a traditional wife" thing needs to be talked about before getting married. On the other hand I also believe it to be asinine to marry into a traditional Indian family while expecting to not have to adapt to their culture at all. Also, (in case they get married and end up moving in with his parents) living with your spouse's family while acclimating to living in a different country can give you a big head start and form a great sense of community, it doesn't have to be a permanent thing, but it's respectful towards their culture to at least give it a try. For claiming to be a spiritual and woke person, Kimberly seems to be VERY set in her ways and not willing to adapt at all. I dislike her a lot. 😅😅

This is one of those cases where both parties to the relationship are in the wrong to some extent. It's beyond foul for him to deceive her about the expectation that she'll be a traditional Indian wife until after they're married. But she was wrong for flipping out and overreacting to the whole construction issue. These are both very flawed people.

As an Indian woman, I'm surprised that Kimberley didn't do her research. The family she's marrying into is clearly very conservative even by modern Indian standards- and TJ is your average Indian guy lol. He's going to never defend her from his family and will expect her to do all the housework. And I'm going to go out on a limb and say it here- he really doesn't care about her, her freedom, her personality, else he would not hide things from her- he cares about her whiteness and unfortunately she got attracted by her oriental perspective she has of Indian culture or whatever. This shit is so doomed.

One of my best friends from HS is Indian, her parents were older Indians who adopted her there and then moved to the US to give her a better life. Her parents taught her that while their culture has a lot of beauty and love in it, it is very toxic with the expectation of women to be servants to their families. A big reason why that part of the culture is still perpetuated is that the Indian government has zero infrastructure towards taking care of the elderly or disabled. So the greedy politicians can pocket the money that should be used to care for their needy citizens, and instead shame the women of the family into being full time caretakers/maids. Her parents even insisted she finish college first before they’d ever consider giving their blessing for a marriage. Thanks to their evolved viewpoints she has a successful career and is happily married with a beautiful baby boy. Pointing out the sexism and toxicity in cultures doesn’t mean you hate the culture, it means you love it enough to want it to improve for everybody’s well being.

As an Indian and a Hindu and someone who has never watched this show, I'm gonna correct or rather try to correct whatever I got from your recap. Firstly whatever meditation or manifestation TJ did is so laughable coz no f-ing person does that. And the onion garlic thing, its definitely not in Hinduism... I'm sure its in Jainism. Also the "everything after marriage" is such an Indian thing... And its bs I know😭 And no! Not all Indian/Hindu marriages are like that where you have to leave everything and just take care of the family, I'm pretty sure only a few people still do that. And the way Indians and our cultures are presented on this show is so frustrating and annoying and wrong 🤦‍♀️

Actually garlic and onions are eaten by most Hindus but there are certain people/sects that make the exception. It's the people who belong Jainism (completely different religion from Hinduism) that have to strictly refrain from garlic, onions, and any sort of meat/eggs. However, even within Jains, there are people who don't adhere to these restrictions.
