As a white belt myself, I find that the white belt energy is so difficult to deal with. When I go to roll with a fellow white belt, their energy is almost always at a 10. I usually just tap immediately and let them have the submissions because I don't want to get injured using all of my strength to go up against a guy twice my size with that kind of energy. I don't even get to do a lot of the techniques I've been working on when I roll with other white belts because they just like to go as hard as they can. My professor has told me to not roll with white belts if I can help it and to start rolling with higher belts because he says, "Unlike white belts, upper belts don't have anything to prove." The energy is so different rolling with the upper belts and I'm able to practice my technique more rather than just go into survival mode. I always make sure to thank the upper belts after my roll because they are clearly allowing me to practice my technique instead of destroying me like I know they can.

It is. Even as a purple belt, going into a roll with a brand new larger white belt, I know I can handle myself but there is always that sort underlying apprehension about what they might do (and not even realize it!). Keep getting in those rolls with the upper belts :)

White belt energy... So I teach the intro class, and one of the first things I always tell the brand new people is, "whoever is LEAST tired at the end of this class is the winner."

I’m 74 and experiencing my 2nd childhood. Most people my age buy a red corvette or a black trans am. I’m starting Jiu Jitsu? First day a disaster. Put the pants on backwards; lousy at shrimping and do not fall backwards very well. Fourth visit I hurt my shoulder- land wrong. Hurt so badly I couldn’t play golf the next day. My wife had a field day with “ I told you so”. Am pissed off and move determined to succeed. John V. Y

@@kimberlykinch I watch rolling on Utube a lot, I am to old to try it , I have to be frank, I do not like man rolling with women, but that is me, I will only watch woman rolling, and not for some cheap reasons, either; it is the same with football I only watch the English WSL, it is something different. The question I was going to ask you is this: every body including you keep on about the male strength, but no one ever mention the more important advantages of the female body in rolling, namely more flexibility, and because of wider pelvis they can do moves and escapes that the male body cannot do. I watched the best two females rolling one is world champion Japanese I do not remember their names. It was mesmerising, it was like two snakes rolling. That I will watch, not mixed matches, no more that I would watch MMA man vs women

Haha I love the part about the white belt energy. And I am 100% experiencing some of it. Like leaving all the energy on the mat and often deep breathing inbetween rolls (I am learning to relax more fortunately :)). Also when I roll with mainly higher belts I tend to laugh from joy alot. Because they always get me with something I never expected and honestly I am just fascinated about it! And I feel fortunate that they surprise me like this because I look up to them :)

I know EXACTLY what you mean about the white belt energy lmao. I've been a white belt for almost 11 years now due to things like moving/university/surgeries/covid/etc. Finally have started training consistently again (and got my first stripe this week lol) but have seen and dealt with this alot over the years. I just let them exhaust and then continue 😤

Friday was my second class, and I think my white belt energy has been cut in half already Maybe I delusional and totally white belt energy yet, but I felt waaaaaay more calm in my second class, more relaxed, actually thinking about the moves, dealing with the weight of my colleague with more savy moves... I still use too much strength, because I know exactly 4 technical moves, but I feel I'm not just punching through my way in anymore Very happy about that!

The no-gi coach recently was stressing breathing / energy use. Seems like I'm the only one doing it too much, though he said I'm now only doing too much of that when I'm in a bad position (rather than good or neutral) so progress of a kind I guess. I don't think I've ever cursed at a sparring partner after getting submitted, but if I shake my head or curse, it's pretty much at myself if I've made a mistake I feel I really shouldn't have (and as I'm a white belt, that happens...a little less now than it used to but still more than I'd like). Of I'll get tapped by a purple belt I'm twice the size of...just a little frustrating because there's so much to learn. I guess I kind of understand though, because I'm nearly always going against higher-level people but recently a new guy joined the gym; he's a big, rawboned kid...going against him was a bit weird; I guess that's what a lot of the higher-level people feel like all the time against white belts.

I just started 3 months ago, and what is mostly discouraging to me is the attitude towards white belts from higher belts. For context, I work in a skilled trade and have trained many people in my trade for years. I would never dream of making fun of beginners calling them "spazzy" or chuckle at their lack of skill. Because they're beginners. And this shit is hard. So why is this such an issue in BJJ?

oh no I have that "white belt energy" I squealed (Like a young girl and I'm 48 yo) a few times when taken down in the last month. It just happens. I was embarrassed and we all laughed every time. I'm suddenly more embarrassed by it. Hope that's something that I just learn to control in time.

I'm a white belt, going on 5 months of training. My issue is that I am hyperflexible. I have had at least 5 different coaches comment on this. My shoulders, ankles, and knees bend abnormally far and I still don't feel much. Unfortunately, I'm getting inflammed from all the joint cranking and I sometimes do hurt later. I'm not sure what to do. If it hurt I would tap, but it doesn't hurt. Sucks for my partners too since they can't tell if their technique is good.
@kimberlykinch
@kimberlykinch 2 жыл бұрын
Ah man! Yeah this is kind of tough. Maybe try to tap before the joint is hyperextended? Since you now know that letting it stretch farther than it should causes inflammation?

Most of BJJ gyms offer trial training. If you have several gyms around you, try them all before to make your decision. Check if there have fundamentals class or beginner class. Also trust your instinct or first impression when you enter the gym the first time in order to make your final decision.
