I couldn't think of them when I started this video but man some of those are too accurate. - Dude who's the same rank coaching me while we roll and he's in a non dominant position?? Like okay. - Newer guys my age/size that always try to beat me like it's a final: think scratches/knees/death grips (I swear he always finds me when I just finish rolling with a massive partner too lol) - I saw a 3 stripe whitebelt girl like 120lbs ish rolling with a newer white belt guy and he was trying hard for a rnc, when another white belt guy said from the side "dude stop trying so hard, she's a small girl". I guess I understood his intention, but I still cringed really hard. She actually said something like "what?? Do you want to roll next?!" So I'm happy she challenged him on it even if he didn't intend to slight her

Just found your channel and oml I luv it sm!! I started jiu-jitsu two weeks ago and it's so much fun!! I'm a senior in hs and I really wanted to try something new and I met only two other women in the class but they were so kind and really motivated me to join! I look forward to watching more of your vids in the future!

These are great. How about when you're rolling and it's going good with your partner at a good pace-nothing crazy, nothing light- but then your professor comes by and is watching you both, your partner switches to 'murder mode'. Annoying but expected.

Hey! Your videos have been so helpful for me for a while! And I was wondering if you could make a video on preparing for a tournament (nerves beforehand, private lessons, what to expect) it would help so much since I’m participating in my first tournament in a few weeks! Thank you!

Hey Kimberly, I have a question that you might have answered already in one of your videos, but if not, I was wondering if it’s normal to have such a hard time finding a partner to roll with. I started Jiu Jitsu a little over a month ago and I really enjoy rolling. The problem is that I usually just roll with one or two people max. when we spar at the end of class. Most of the time I am way too anxious to ask someone to roll with me because I know that not everyone likes rolling with an a) much smaller opponent and b) a new beginner white belt. But they are also not asking me to roll. Sometimes when they can’t find a partner and it’s just me left, they rather sit out a round than roll with me. So almost every class I’m just sitting there for 30 minutes or more watching everyone roll and at this point my coach thinks that I’m refusing to roll. Any tips?

Probably be best to have a chat with your coach.

Ashley said it best! It took me a while to feel comfortable asking guys to roll. Even just a year ago when I changed schools, it took a little bit to feel comfortable asking all of the new guys that I've never met before. I think a lot guys won't ask a girl they've never met before to roll. I find that once you become friendly with the guys in the room and if they see that you're comfortable rolling with them, they are more open to asking you to roll. I think as uncomfortable as we are sometimes asking, they feel the same way. But to get it going, you just gotta ask them! Like Ashley said, it may definitely be out of your comfort zone, but you'll be much happier afterwards knowing that you got your training in. :)

Hey Kimberly! At 4:12 you say "You do not want to poke your training partners in the eye with your nails" and I agree completely but I want to add and stress that also "You do not want to poke your training partners in the eye. period!" This is something that bothers me greatly because I am visually impaired. I lost one eye long time ago and in the other eye I can only see through about a third of it and even there, ten times worse than a normal person. I find it completely annoying and strange that even though I barely see, In one year of training I have never poked anyone in the eye and got poked several times by several different partners. If a poke in my eye would cause me to loose it, I would be completely blind. When I roll with people I put MORE emphasis on not hurting them and keeping them safe than on me getting the tap. If I can do something but it has some risk of hurting my partner, I just don't do it, and if they get the better of me because of this, so what. It just annoys me immensely when I tell people I can't see, I tell them to watch my eyes and even after all that, they just shoot their fingers at my eyes because they are trying to get my hands or trying to choke me from the back or something. Sorry for the rant, this just hit a sensitive point for me.

The Gracies do some videos on this. In short, their answer is: just encourage and support. Don't try to coach them. Don't ever show disappointment in them, especially if they lose at a tournament. For my part, I would say you need to be prepared for your daughter being sore and frustrated sometimes. That's probably going to feel rough for both of you, but the process of getting through that, surviving, and coming out the other side will make her stronger, braver, tougher and better than she knew she could be. Also, Eddie Bravo talks about his (much younger son.) He says how when he showed his son how to tie his shoelaces, the kid was struggling. Eddie showed him that he could tie his own laces without even looking, then explained how he couldn't tie his own laces at his son's age either. He explained that everything is difficult when you first do it, but it gets easier the more you do it, until eventually you can do it without even thinking about it. BJJ is one of the hardest things anyone can do, so it might take a while to get good, but when she does, your daughter is going to feel AMAZING. I would suggest you talk to her about her goals, then find ways to celebrate when she achieves them. These could be wee things, like hitting a particular move she's working on, or bigger things like getting a stripe or even a belt.

I'm fortunate that my Sensei has managed to cultivate a 'badass but nurturing' culture, so I haven't faced most of the issues discussed here. There have been times when I've had to ask some of the seriously strong dudes to dial it back a bit, but no big deal. There's a generally good attitude to personal hygiene, though being one of the few vegans I can often smell my partners' shitty diets. Lol. Regarding that 'tired but wired' feeling after training, I've found putting on meditative music when going to bed to be invaluable. I now do that even on nights when I haven't trained. One of the best I've found is 'Enchanted Forest Music (528Hz) : Brings Positive Transformation | Mystical Forest Sounds' available on YT at watch?v=09r8XdHRWe8 I then sleep like a baby.
