I'm a huge fan of Devil Hunter Yohko, it being one of my first megadrive games. The projectile bubble is definitely your best friend and will negate the need to get close to most enemies. Yeah the jumping is a bit odd but you can get used to it. It is worth perseverance and I go back to it and finish it every couple of years or so. As for the anime, I didn't see it until years later.... it was practically pr0n 😳

Devil Hunter Yohko is about a teenage girl raised to fight demons, but she really doesn't want to. Also, she'll lose her magical demon fighting powers if she loses her virginity, which would basically be win-win to her, only she can't seem to get a boyfriend. So yeah, it's exactly that kind of anime.

The thing I always found weird about the Toys Genesis/Mega Drive game was the cover where they based it on the main movie poster where Robin Williams is wearing a hat with a smaller Robin Williams wearing a hat with an even smaller Robin Williams wearing a hat but they obviously didn't have the rights to Robin Williams' likeness so the cover is... just the hat. And there was an alternate movie poster that would have been ideal for a game cover, with Robin Williams sitting in a room with a checkerboard floor with that elephant thing and that black robot thing dominating the background; all they would have to have done would be to do a face swap on Robin Williams with a generic face.

So while I was out today I was listening to CUPodcast and Ian mentioned Gargoyles as being one of the best looking games on the Mega Drive. "What the heck is Gargoyles?" I thought. How could I have missed this game if it's as impressive as he says? Then I come home, put on a Kim Justice video - and it's GARGOYLES! And, yeah, looks nice.

The only thing that has me slightly less hyped about the Gargoyles remaster (I never even knew there WAS a game) is that you only play as Goliath. This feels like a prime candidate for some kind of Castlevania 3-esque mechanic where you rescue the other gargoyles and they have unique abilities. Maybe Hudson's sword could damage enemies that block or something.

I'll have you know, Osomatsu-kun Hachamecha Gekijou suuuuure is something with a rather (for lack of a better word here) unfortunate story regarding its development.:) Metal Fangs's OST sounds like a banger, I'll have to give it a download from Zophar given the snippet of gameplay audio ya showed off. I've actually played a bit of Generations Lost back in 2016 when I was browsing shitty ROM sites, and I found it very underrated then, haven't played it much since though, so it was a pleasant surprise hearing it again.

Thank you for finally motivating me to look up what “deep cut” means….3 decades on. All the retro emulator front-ends really need an “anti-favourite” button to tag some of these awful games… that I love to go and play after watching a video like this! I remember reading about Generations Lost in magazines back in the day, and it was dismissed as a poor clone of Flashback.

Toys was an absolute pain to play because the "Peanut Gun" was the only effective projectile weapon in the game. Everything else was useless. The security camera segments were also frustrating.

I adored the Gargoyles game and have some fond memories of it. That spider elevator section made me afraid of elevators for like a week. The one part I remember the most is on one of the castle towers you can throw an enemy off the top in just the right way. They go right through a hole in a lower tower and bounce like 4 times off the walls inside before sliding just outside the door. So if you follow their body quickly and down smash slide, you can see them bounce around and it looks like they landed at your feet because you end up in the same place. Also you better be good to my girl Yuko :p

lol that devil hunter yohko game was such a deep cut, i had no idea it even had a game. i rented a VHS of like two episodes from blockbuster when i was like 8 or 9 years old and it was very weirdly horny and when i looked it up years later as an adult it only got like a few episodes before fading into anime obscurity.
@Andrew_TS
@Andrew_TS Жыл бұрын
I think it was probably successful for what it was. It doesn't seem to be a failed or canceled TV anime, but a series of OVAs (original video animation). Think of an anime version of the Direct-to-Video market that flourished during the height of the VHS era. The volumes had likely a higher budget than individual television episodes. I had a few volumes at my rental store. There were apparently 5 total volumes overall.

Toys looked bad even in the magazine previews in the early 90s. It seems to have that old Atari-era Activision style of gameplay which also worked for "A Boy and his Blob" on the NES, which worked in the days of one-button joysticks and 4-kilobyte cartridges, but seemed outdated by 1990. It also suffered from (1) being an adaptation of a film that wanted to be a blockbuster, but ended up being a bomb, (2) that the film itself wasn't well-suited to become a game, and (3) that it couldn't use Robin Williams' likeness in the game at all. Bruce Willis' first post-Die Hard movie "Hudson Hawk" had all these problems too.

Yeah, I guess I'll be that guy who chimes in with an Absolute game they actually like. _Goofy's Hysterical History Tour_ isnt an especially *great* game, mind, but it is one I grew up with and have a lot of fondness for (like the time traveling setting - bonus points for being one of very few games to have an American Revolution era level - but also the Extend-O-Matic Hand is pretty fun to use in a _Bionic Commano_ kind of way), even as I have a lot I can criticize about it (brutally difficult; that Revolutionary War-era stage has a pirate ship level that is entirely on tiny wooden crates floating in instant-kill water that goes on for too long, and falling down in the following stage takes you right back to it!). Probably won't change your verdict, but eh, it's somethin' above their usual fare.

I really like Shanghai III The Dragon's Eye _except for the Option Menus that look out of Windows 3.1_ They nailed the atmosphere, relegating the Master System Shanghai to the unsufferable underworld. It combines strategy and luck. Sometimes, as in real life, you simply cannot win and I like that. Activision owned the license, why not. In 2005, Shanghai came back on the Sega Naomi arcade board. This time, you have to rearrange the tiles within a time limit. Very arcady and nice overall with that shenmuesque soundtrack. Anyway, as a tribute to the Parlour Games genre, Shanghai III surprisingly features in my Top 50 Mega Drive games, together with Side Pocket by Data East and Theme Park by Bullfrog, three spots neither Dynamite Headdy nor Gunstar Heroes were graced with. I will fight you on this hill. It's all about bringing diversity to your Mega Drive library.

I kinda get a kick out of drop down menus like that on consoles tbh, it's funny to me. And hey, I enjoy Shanghai II just fine. Probably spent way longer playing it there than I needed to for 10 seconds or so of footage...

It really is tragic how some of the best game designers from the Atari 2600 (Kitchen, Van Ryzen, Crane) were so hopeless on later consoles. Race Drivin' for the Super NES was made by the creator of HERO, to name one example. Also, I didn't care much for the Gargoyles video game, due in part because of the difficulty and the iffy control, but also because the writers blotted out the supported cast. Goliath is a free agent in the game, and only meets Eliza Masa at the end. What happened to Brooklyn, Lexington, Broadway, and Hudson? Why can't we play as any of them?

Believe it or not, Gargoyles was also slated for an SNES release, as was Pocahontas. However, both were canceled for the system due to poor sales of the Genny versions. It would've been interesting to see them on the SNES, maybe someone found a near final build of these games, would love to see someone do a comparison.

You would think that Gargoyles would have at least been a more well known game through the cartoon's massive popularity with cartoon fans and 90's kids. It certainly sounds like it should at least be in the same regard as Capcom's Ducktales and Darkwing Duck games, but I keep forgetting such a game existed. Had it not been for the remaster, anyway. Saw the trailer for that and I just thought to myself, Oh yeah! That was a thing.

i rented Generations Lost back when it was first released and cant remember if i beat it then but i did finish it later on and i like the ending. its been a fave of mine. it was very likely rushed due to one of the areas not being playable level but giving dialogue to further unlock the story. which is a good story IMO. the game needs to be like two more good levels longer but i would also like to see a sequel made.

Toys is such a weird film. I feel very ambivalent about it; I kinda love it and hate it at the same time :/ I mostly like the film but it has an odd anti-videogame message at its hear; implying that toys from the past are brilliant and videogames are the corruption of youth. It's essentially Old Man Shouts At Cloud: The Movie. Still, it's superbly shot and full to the brim with an off kilter vibe. So, yeah... I simultaneously love and hate the film.

Gargoyles and Generation Lost easily look like the best on here. The Mamono Hunter Yohko anime sounds like it's totally...well, not something I'd like (it sounds like it's a poor man's Cutey Honey even, and it was only a 6 episode OVA), even with legendary voice actress Aya Hisakawa voicing its protagonist, and the game equally looks as bad and cheap, especially with the graphics (Yohko oddly looks more like adult Chi Chi from the Dragon Ball franchise) and the music is out of key as the composers seemed to not know how to work the YM2612 chip. Even that awful Ultraman Mega Drive game looks better (and looking at the end when you beat it, all you get is a credits scroll, and then one lousy image of Yohko. Pathetic). 😵‍💫
