It's actually quite fun. You're free to dislike it, but let's not act like Nuts and Bolts is an objectively bad game. Starcraft. Just amazing, even to this day. The most revolutionary thing was briefly touched on, but not really explained. RTS games to that point were largely mirror matches - two sides with mostly equivalent units. Warcraft 2, for example, the orcs and humans had nearly identical units, with just a few exceptions (trolls/archers, paladins/ogremages, and deathknights/mages). But Starcraft came along and completely blew that away. Three races, and not a single unit has an exact match - even the resource gatherers were similar but not identical. Everything for each side was different - their base building, units, combat styles. All three completely different, yet somehow in near perfect balance. There hadn't been anything quite like it before, and arguably it hasn't been bettered since.

What a great list, I love so many of these games! However, I think it may be worth mentioning just how revolutionary Gran Turismo was.. I assume Peter saw cars and switched off, each to their own, but it does a disservice to an incredible game. If viewed side by side with other racers of the time, GT blows them out of the water in almost every respect. The graphics were obviously great, the roster of cars was huge, the accuracy of car models was impressive, the realism on offer for the time was unparalleled, with a wide variety of real life car upgrades and even racing drivers tests! These were not normal things! Perhaps if you aren't a car person or you're just used to more modern fair then this may seem pretty standard, but it's important to remember that the reason they feel that way is in large part down to Gran Turismo. When I first played it as a kid, I could barely wrap my head around the thing, it seemed impossible.. and that was just part of the joy of this epic year in gaming history!
@cardenasr.28982 жыл бұрын
Racing games can be divided between pre Gran Turismo and post-GT. I was a little kid back then so I wasn't fond of the game, but looking back I can see how decisive it was. There wouldn't be Forza Motorsport or others without Gran Turismo setting so many standards
@caifabe8050 Жыл бұрын
in hindsight it may seem like standard racing game fare now, but back in 1998, Gran Turismo was EXTREMELY innovative to the racing genre. there's a reason the old GT games seem like "standard racing game fare" now. it's because so much of what we see as standard in racing games nowadays started with Gran Turismo back in 1998.

Maybe you just aren't racing game people, but it feels like you've not done Gran Turismo enough service. It was met with praise not just for doing everything it did very well, but for featuring an unprecedented volume and attention to detail. Not only was this number of cars and circuits unheard of in any racing game, but so was the wealth of tuning options, car settings and driving realism (at least outside of a previously very niche market of PC racing simulations). GT literally took racing games from being an arcade affair with slippy slidey Daytona/Outrun/Ridge Racer gameplay to a new level of seriousness and very much into the coming millennium.
