The best part of this entire trilogy for me is when, right after the speech is done, Aragorn says, "For Frodo" and Merry and Pippin charge headlong into a battle that is almost certain death without so much as a single thought for their own regard. Isn’t it fantastic, how Frodo actually fails the quest… and it’s the acts of compassion both he and Bilbo did - sparing Gollum - and also the Ring’s own corrupting force - turning Gollum and Frodo against each other in a mad rage (a great addition in the film version that Frodo is fighting back) - which ultimately undoes the Ring and Sauron. Amazingly well constructed, just like the Ending of Star Wars, where it is compassion and love that father and son feel for each other, which undoes the Emperor. That’s how you construct an ending. All the core themes play into it.

People praise the Rohirrim' charge, which surely is outstandingly admirable, but this scene is also on par with it. These are last of the men, surrounded by millions of orcs. They know it's a suicide mission, even Gimli and Legolas were having their final moments together. Yet all of them, they charged. No fear, no hesitation. Also look at the diversity here. We have a dwarf, an elf, two hobbits, a wizard and the men of the west with their king. All different races, yet they charged together, like true brothers in arms. The unity, the courage, the fearlessness, the charge, the screams.... Mindblowing

I don't know if anyone else feels the same but I love the moment from 1:50 when Sauron is speaking to Aragorn. You can see Aragorn going forward like something is calling him, at the same time you can see Gandalf and Legolas glimp of woriness. Right there, where Aragorn is putting his sword down and keeps going forward everyone is curious about what he is about to do. I believe this is a beautiful contrast between Aragorn and Isildur. When Isildur heard a voice calling him he gave up to it, however, Aragorn has seen through it and knows what his mission is here.

Remember that Gandalf is like an angel that is sent to guide them win the good battle, mortals by themselves cannot fight these higher beings like Sauron and Nazgul, so in these moments was shown that even the most honorable people can get corrupted and they need divine guidance. It'll never be remade the same way this one was. Thats not just because of nostalgia, but because of how the film industry is now. CGI looks terrible nowadays because theres no love in it, mass produced in sweatshop like fashion for well under the money the talent deserves. Actors not being able to keep their noses out of political affairs thinking their opinions are more of value and influence than anybody else's. And just in general I don't know how they could perfectly cast all of these characters and more again. I just don't see it possible. Film industry pushing agendas to cater for all audiences and to tick boxes for marketing . Rings of Power is a great example of this. It's devastating because we have the technology, skill and money to do it right, to create insane masterpieces that could last 100s of years if not forever. Just that everything is being poisoned, corrupted and warped for quick cash grabs and appeasing groups of people that would riot if representation isn't a massive topic in a entirely unrelated piece of art.

FAQ 1) Why do they even fight? To make Sauron focus their attention on them, and to lure out saurons army and nazgul. Otherwise Frodo and Sam would have needed to walk through an army to get to mount doom 2) Why let the enemy encircle them tho? Because Aragorn needed Sauron to think he was a cocky, overconfident young king, falling prey to the power of the ring. He has shown himself in the Palantir, taunting Sauron. He made Sauron think he has the ring. He put up camp right in front of the main gate, sounding the horns, demanding for Sauron to come out and kneel in front of the „lords of the west“. If he had put up a good defensive position or ambush sauron would have been careful. He might have sent out his nazgul to keep their eyes open for suprises. He might have kept back some of his forces for an encirclement, to intercept an ambushing force or to make sure no one would run away with the ring (again!). By letting Sauron encircle them Aragorn made sure all enemy troops would come out and Sauron would put his attention fully „on the price“ 3) So basically eagles save the day - again! No, not really. At this point the ring would have made it anyways. They saved quite a few lives, but thats it. Also considering Sauron is literally a god and always has all the advantages its only fair for manwe to slightly tip back the scales a bit from time to time (Eagles being strongly associated with manwe) 4) where did aragorns horse go? In the books they actually had a mounted force with them, but they were removed from the movie for whatever reason. Aragorn riding in on a horse, which then disappears is - at this point - just a continuity error. 5) No one on the back even heard what Aragorn was saying This is a common problem - we know of quite a few historic pre-battle speeches. A lot of them probably were added later on, but a number of them must have happened. Here are a few ways to look at it: The speeches might have been repeated multiple times for different parts of the army. People from the front might have repeated them to the ones behind them. The speeches might have just been for the leadership, expecting the common solider to just follow the signal/banner/leaders or you might have preplanned the speech and have multiple people read them. Neither of those things would have fit the mood here, so it was probably right to just omit it from the scene. Also: In a world full of magic, orcs and dragons you could just give them this amount of leeway, right? 6) Isnt it a bit too convenient the ground just stops breaking in front of the good guys Sure. If you want you can call this Manwes or even Illuvatars intervention. But there might be a better reason: The destruction of the ring does more than just kill Sauron. He bound his power and fate to this ring. The destruction of this ring fulfills saurons fate, and of those whose fate he bound to himself. His work becomes undone. The power of the ring reverts against its owner and his labours. 7) The bad guys still couldve won Probably, yes. In the book it is described that the armies were bound to Saurons willpower. Quite a few amongst those orc, goblin and human tribes fighting for Sauron werent exactly best friends either. With Sauron dead the will that bound them together vanishes. Also they just saw a god die and half a country become ripped in half. So most of them run. Even in our history most battles were won because the opposing force routed, sometimes even numerically superior forces. 8) How did Saurons eye not see Frodo? There are multiple answers for this. First of Aragorns plan worked out. He made Sauron focus on him. Sam and Frodo also were somewhat protected by their fate, Galadriels cloaks and their nature. The hobbits always seemed to have some resistance to the rings allure. And by resisting the ring they resisted it pulling them over into the spirit plane where they would have been open to saurons gaze. The ring only had power relative to its wielder. The book describes that it made its wielder powerful by their own standard. The hobbits were neither powerful, nor did they desire power. Thus the rings was relatively weak in their hands. Weak enough to not be noticed. But the most important thing is this: Sauron is very intelligent and cunning. But he has one fatal flaw - the biggest advantage the fellowship has: He could never, every imagine someone destroying the ring. Use it against him? Yeah. Even hide it? Maybe. But go to mordor to throw it into mount doom? Unthinkable. Not only did he think this is unlikely or even impossible....the very thought was so foreign to him he never once thought about it.

This part is even more epic when you realize that the choir is singing what Aragorn said to Frodo in the first film "If by my life or death, I can protect you I will, you have my sword." in Sindarin as Aragorn leads the charge. When the eagles arrive you can see hope restored as it gives a sense of divine intervention. At least according to modern scholarship on the subject, by the likes of John Keegan or Adrian Goldsworthy, which is probably the closest we moderns will ever get to knowing what it was like to fight in pre-modern battles, being in the centre of the battle line was most likely a terrifying place to be. You couldn't hear anything other than the sounds clanging of metal and the screams of wounded and dying men, just a short distance away from you. But you'd also have absolutely no idea how well your side is doing, since you can't actually see over the men in front of you. That uncertainty was compounded the fact you're completely stuck in the center of the formation. Those in the back ranks can take comfort in being able to escape first, those in the front ranks are in an adrenaline filled frenzy and don't have the time to stop to think about their situation. But you're just squished in the middle, waiting to win or lose in a situation you likely have no ability to ever impact. So, as much as historians are able to reconstruct, being in the middle of the formation would have been absolutely terrible.

It always makes me sad [and a little annoyed] everytime anyone says "they are proud of Frodo" ---- this goes to show that even the audience think [or assume] that all the main characters think of Frodo as the HERO, when in actuality, Frodo would have not made it [not even halfway to Mordor] without SAM. I understand that Frodo carried most of the burden, but then again, that's because he was the rightful heir of the ring [Bilbo's heir], hence he is literally the only one allowed as ring bearer. The mere fact that Sam has been treated as a side character is so unjustified.. During the last stand, You could hear the main characters screaming at the top of their lungs "for Frodo"... And this itself is a testament that all of them only think of Frodo, not even the slightest regard for Sam.... It's so infuriating because if the roles where reversed, I'm pretty sure that Sam would have made it much farther than Frodo did , tbh.

Man the scene with Gandalf right before the eagles came really was done beautifully. They made it seem like Gandalf, who is much stronger now due to him to being White instead of Gray was genuinely afraid/discouraged/all hope is lost once he saw the Nazgûl and their mounts flying towards them because he secretly was still holding out hope that Frodo would really save them by destroying the ring and saving middle earth and the people who marched out to confront the dark lord just to buy Frodo time and keep that eye away from him. But the moment he saw them, his expression made it seem as if all hope was lost. He seemed terrified and utterly heartbroken as he realized that he would have to see that many brave men, Aragon, Legolas and every one else die before him because he’d be the last one to fall due to him being an istari and maiar. Then the look of utter relief when the eagles came… man this was really well done.

I don’t hear it mentioned often, but I also find it beautiful that he says “on this GOOD Earth.” Something that both Morgoth and Sauron loved to do in many occasions was trying to convince the Children of Ilùvatar that the Valar and Ilùvatar himself didn’t exist, and/or were deceiving them about the origins and the true nature of the world. That the world was in fact created by Morgoth, was ugly and evil by nature, and therefore that Morgoth himself - or Sauron in this case - was its rightful ruler. Well, just by saying “this good Earth”, Aragorn is calling bullshit on all that. He’s not only defying Sauron, he’s implicitly defying Morgoth too, by reminding his brothers that, despite all the evil that the dark forces poured into it, the world, at its core, does remain good. And, as Sam said, it’s worth fighting for.

4:12 there's something about these next few shots when Aragorn goes down and it cuts to Legolas. The look of blind terror and panic on his face when he realizes Aragorn could legitimately die here. And then again at 4:22. Legolas is always composed, always graceful, you see it in the way he fights, the way he moves, even the way he talks. /None/ of that is present here. He's abandoned all of his usual battle tactics and he's literally /shoving/ orcs aside with his bare hands. Watching him desperately claw his way through the throng to even just try to reach Aragorn in time always breaks my heart a little.

IIRC in the original script and when they shot this scene. Aragon was supposed to be fighting a physical manifestation of Sauron himself. Legolas's reaction of sheer panic and desperation here is even more accurate if you consider that he was supposed to be watching his friend desperately fending off the dark lord himself.

And in that very moment, Sauron felt utter, extistential terror. The books describe it as such: "Straight down upon the Nazgûl [the Eagles] bore, stooping suddenly out of the high airs.... But the Nazgûl turned and fled, and vanished into Mordor's shadows, hearing a sudden terrible call out of the Dark Tower; and even at that moment all the hosts of Mordor trembled.... And far away, as Frodo put on the Ring and claimed it for his own, even in Sammath Naur the very heart of his realm, the Power in Barad-dûr was shaken, and the Tower trembled from its foundations to its proud and bitter crown. The Dark Lord was suddenly aware of him, and his Eye piercing all shadows looked across the plain to the door that he had made; and the magnitude of his own folly was revealed to him in a blinding flash, and all the devices of his enemies were at last laid bare. Then his wrath blazed in consuming flame, but his fear rose like a vast black smoke to choke him. For he knew his deadly peril and the thread upon which his doom now hung. From all his policies and webs of fear and treachery, from all his stratagems and wars his mind shook free; and throughout his realm a tremor ran, his slaves quailed, and his armies halted, and his captains suddenly steerless, bereft of will, wavered and despaired. For they were forgotten. The whole mind and purpose of the Power that wielded them was now bent with overwhelming force upon the Mountain. At his summons, wheeling with a rending cry, in a last desperate race there flew, faster than the winds, the Nazgûl, the Ringwraiths, and with a storm of wings they hurtled southwards to Mount Doom."

1:52 I think that at this moment, Sauron promised the world to Aragorn if he would accept him as his master; Aragorn then truly understands the enticement that Sauron's have over Frodo throughout the journey, by the ring's power, realizing how painful that would have been. Marvelous acting.
@teleportedbreadfor3days2 жыл бұрын
A good theory. And Aragorn is unaffected, in the sense that he isn't like other men, nor Isildur: Both Morgoth and Sauron tainted Men, they corrupted them, lied to them, gave them fear of death and made them cowardly and dishonorable. Many of them carried those corruptions and impurities down the generations, their souls like white sheets with spots of dirt on them, and many of those Men had to overcome those corruptions while other great Men like Theoden, who called out to death with his fellow Rohirrim at the battle for Minas Tirith, had to overcome them for them. Aragorn was untainted, a clean soul, the kind of man you thought hadn't existed since they first came to Middle Earth, as if he had to be corrupted all over again, for the shadow over Isildur's lineage did not sway him.
@KomradeCPU2 жыл бұрын
@@teleportedbreadfor3days Indeed, King Theoden using Death as his warcry was a statement that they didn't fear it, for it was dying trying or living in fear, while at the same time being in accordance with Eru Iluvatar's plan for humanity since the beginning. Went full circle, that's why I come back to these videos from time to time, what a masterpiece.
@gokiloki620 Жыл бұрын
I like how you can interpret the line „For Frodo.“ not only as a way of saying „Let’s fight so Frodo has a clear path“ but also as way of saying „Let’s revenge our fallen friend“ because at this point in the movie they don’t know if Frodo and Sam are dead and even in Aragorns face you can see some form of despair and something I would call a selfreflecting foolish form of hope in the knowledge that it all may be for nothing, but Aragon believes too much to turn back now not just in Frodos success but also in the cause of why Frodo is pursuing that goal.

Also Peter Jackson said that this was Viggo Mortensen's idea. He wanted to make it seem that Aragorn has befallen Sauron's spell. But he'll then turn around and say "For Frodo".
