My favourite character. No magic bloodline. No prophesied destiny. Just a dude doing what he can for nation and family. Plus gets this in the novel (from memory don't kill me)" ...and he laughed as he was still fresh and yet unwounded, for he was young and strong, the lust of battle was upon him and he was Lord of a fell people" all this when he thinks they are doomed.

In the book she says, "But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Éomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him." Which, for the first time in perhaps a thousand years, gave the witch king a moment of pause and self doubt. He knew well the prophesy, and here before him was one who could technically fulfill it. He had no idea the one beneath his notice was also one who could fulfill the prophesy, and he with a dagger specifically made for the job. The most epic coincidence of all fantasy writing.

Eowyn's scene is much better in the book. In the film, she declares "I am no man" only *after* Merry stabbed the Witch King with the enchanted blade. But in the book, she reveals her identity as a woman and stands strong *before the battle*, even when it seemed she could not possibly win. The way it was written in the book makes Eowyn seem much more admirable/courageous.

Honestly, I think the movie version is better. In the books, Eowyn shows absolutely no fear, and never actually fought him. Eowyn revealed herself as a woman which made the Witch King hesitate, allowing Merry to stick him. In the film, Eowyn is obviously shaking in her boots, but stands up to him anyway, even after trading blows with his mount. THAT is true courage, and a much better portayal.

@kim Jong-unsub It wasn't a requirement that woman be the one to kill him. The Nazgul weren't unkillable but they weren't exactly easy marks either. Their wraithly nature made killing them very challenging. There was a prophecy made long before the events of the film that the witch king of angmar would not meet his end at the hands of man, and it is probably this prophecy to which he was referring when he says that no man could kill him. But more than this, the thing that led him to his end was being stabbed in the leg by a Barrow blade by Merry (even moreso not a man than Eowen). That was a sword purpose built for disrupting the magic that kept wraiths "alive" so to speak. Eowen being a woman had no impact on the effectiveness of her killing blow, she was just aided by the fact that he was already mortally wounded by Merry's strike.

Among the verses in William Shakespeare's Macbeth, one of the prophecies that the witch made to Macbeth is this. "It will not fall down to those born by a woman," and "It will not fall unless the forest of Birnam moves on its own and crosses the Dunsinane."There was a prediction that Macduff, who eventually killed Macbeth, was a man who cut off his mothers stomach before he was born, and Malcom's army camouflaged and crossed over, which looks like a forest moving. Even in the Lord of the Rings, Witch-King of Angmar, When he said, "No man can kill me." and Eowyn says, "I am no man." These two episodes show what the two books deal with fatalistic stories have in common.

The book was MUCH better: Dernhelm: "Begone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace!" A cold voice answered: 'Come not between the Nazgûl and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye." A sword rang as it was drawn. "Do what you will; but I will hinder it, if I may." "Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!" Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel. "But no living man am I! You are looking upon a woman. Eowyn am I, Eomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him." The winged creature screamed at her, but then the Ringwraith was silent, as if in sudden doubt. Very amazement for a moment conquered Merry's fear. He opened his eyes and the blackness was lifted from them. There some paces from him sat the great beast, and all seemed dark about it, and above it loomed the Nazgul Lord like a shadow of despair. A little to the left facing them stood whom he had called Dernhelm. But the helm of her secrecy had fallen from her, and and her bright hair, released from its bonds, gleamed with pale gold upon her shoulders. Her eyes grey as the sea were hard and fell, and yet tears gleamed in them. A sword was in her hand, and she raised her shield against the horror of her enemy's eyes.”

The #1 death in the books reveals it was really Merry that killed the Witch King. The sword he used had come from the barrow downs, a bit that was cut from the movies. And merry wasn't a man either! It is a great piece of writing as well. "So passed the sword of the Barrow-downs, work of Westernesse. But glad would he have been to know its fate who wrought it slowly long ago in the North-kingdom when the Dunedain were young, and chief among their foes was the dread realm of Angmar and its sorcerer king. No other blade, not though mightier hands had wielded it, would have dealt that foe a wound so bitter, cleaving the undead flesh, breaking the spell that knit his unseen sinews to his will."

@@ted__3568 Merry's blade was a 'Dagger of Westernesse', which had been found in the hoard of a Barrow-wight (undead spirits kinda similar to ringwraiths), and given to the hobbits by Tom Bombadil. The blade had been forged in Cardolan, one of the three sub-kingdoms that together form the northern kingdom of Arnor, and it had been enchanted with spells specifically designed to 'kill' Ringwraiths. So what happens here is that Merry stabs the Witch King with this blade, which breaks the sorcery that 'binds his unseen sinews to his will' (smth along the lines of that). The scene where Aragorn deflects the knife with his sword was unscripted, in a way. The sctor playing the orc was supposed to throw it past Viggo Mortensen's head, and sound effects would make the clanging sound. But the orc actor's prosthetic makeup made his misjudge his aim, and he threw the knife straight at Mortenson's face. Viggo's natural reflexes are what saved him when he swung the blade and deflected the knife. Otherwise he would've been gravely wounded or even killed. Also, the orc actor licking the knife's blade before throwing it was something the actor did on the spur of the moment. He later said he thought it would add extra menace to his character, and he was right.

That first one, Aragorn killing the Mouth of Sauron, wasn't in the books, but it was oh so satisfying!!! The book never actually tells us what happens to him in the end, just that after the parlay he rides back through the Black Gate to his armies. He did, however, return more than just Frodo's mithril shirt. Along with it was Sam's sword from the Barrow-Downs that he left with Frodo when he took the ring & Sting after Shelob stung Frodo and Sam thought he was dead, and most everything else orcs took from Frodo when they captured him. So that was nice of them at least.

I hated that. I love the movies for their atmosphere, but some of the action scenes I fell mocks the whole story and makes it difficult to enjoy the movies. There's so much to work with here, you could make exceptional action scenes without going over the top with this oliphant scene and the shield "skateboarding". But that's just my opinion.

Never noticed before even though I must have watched it a hundred times, but there's a small continuity error when Aragorn fights Lurtz. When Aragorn is thrown against the tree his sword flies out of his hand, but the next wide shot shows him still holding it, but then he drops it again when the shield is thrown

Also when the woman is fighting the thing (sorry so long ago I don't remember names), on one of teh swings it does with its spiky thing and she leans back she is wearing what looks like a crown instead of her helmet. Almost like it was edited from a different fight with someone else and they changed the story.

What a great list! This video was very enjoyable to watch and I agree with the list although there are two more kills in the movies that I would put in my top 5. One is the epic scene where Gandalf kills the Balrog and the other is when Saruman is defeated and killed in Isengard. This last scene is only in the extended edition of The Return Of The King but I think it's very well done even being different from the books, where Saruman is killed in The Shire. Keep up the hard work and I'm sure those 10k subscribers will come in no time!

That moment when the Witch King, in his battle armor, at the eve of his victory, upon his deadly mount, is challenged by a simple Rohan warrior. "Fool, doth thou not knowest the prophesy? No Man may hinder me!" Then Eoywn takes off her helm, then the Witch King states, "Wait, a woman? That's illegal!" And then gets stabbed in the face.

KEGO yep. Completely by accident as well. Lurtz’s actor couldn’t see very well at that moment and instead of throwing the knife somewhere else, it went straight for Viggo. Thankfully Viggo was good enough to properly deflect it. Honestly, The amount of crazy things that happen behind the scenes is ridiculous, and especially the amount of injuries they keep going through!!! 😂

Just hearing the bow creak as Lurtz pulls it into position, reminds you of how hard it was to pull back the string of a bow.... At least in the old days..... Those things are stinkin difficult if your not used to the strength of it... I would know because I have a wooden recurve bow and I struggle with it sometimes...... Probably should practice with it more😂
