My Laguna 1836 did the same thing yours was doing. Eventually, it stopped turning all together. After investigating a while, I noticed wood chips under my speed control knob. I turned it back and forth several times until it seemed to be clean. Lathe ran perfectly. Now I start and stop the lathe with the speed control knob to keep things clean, and I haven't had any more problems in around a year now. I hit the start button at the beginning and use the speed dial the rest of the day. Good luck.

Hi Kim!! Love to see ya back turning and hogging wood! I would most certainly check your amperage at the breaker panel in your shop. It looked like you might only be on a 10 amperage maybe? Also, if you have an Ace hardware or someplace with a nut house there. Go to the pull out bins. They have screws that fit the cole jaws. They also have rubber foot bottoms for cutting boards or what ever flat stuff that need feet, already drilled out. I have rebuilt my cole jaws may times with these. I mess mine up with finishes all the time. I am so happy to see you back. I look forward to when you kids and maybe husband start doing some turning too!! God bless you and your family!! See ya next week

As a turner and electrical engineer my thoughts are 1) belt speed range 2) voltage drop. Checking your outlet (220) doesn't help as there is no load on it. When you start asking more and more from the motor it draws more and more current, any loose connections will act as resistance dropping some voltage across there. This can be as simple as too long of a run for too small of a wire size to actual loose connections. In my case, while tracing one of these same issues down I found a burnt lug in the meter base causing the power co to shut me off until repaired. Good looking bowl though!

A jam chuck can be a solid block or a glued up 2x12 SYP stack. Turn down to a cylinder bigger than the inside dia. Maybe tapered a little so other bowls can make use of it later. Put some packing foam on inside of bowl and place it onto jam chuck. Use the tailstock to center back in to the hold it left in the bottom. You have to tweak it a little to get it to spin balanced. Add a little tailstock pressure and she will not go anywhere.

As a master electrician I would suggest putting an voltage meter on the circuit while turning. It looks like you have a voltage drop.
@murphymmc
@murphymmc 5 ай бұрын
You may want to check the power supply in the shop. I don't remember if your lathe is 220v or 110v, but having a voltage drop will cause issues like you experienced. I've seen one leg of a 220v circuit be the culprit, on a 110v (115-120v), depending on how well the house is wired and how good the power company is, there may be times when there is a voltage drop to the property. Considering the problems you had with the guy posing as a contractor who built your house, it wouldn't surprise me if his subs were sketchy as well.

Take one of the feet from your cole jaws to your local hardware store, If the person knows anything they should be able to take you right to them . Packaging at my local home hardware in Canada calls them screw bumpers, may be called something else where you are. Just tapered white rubber feet that you might screw to the bottom of a cutting board. I made my own cole jaws using them and they work fine. Package of 4 was just a couple dollars.

Just started watching this video and I was intrigued by your comment and recommendation for an Irish grind bowl gouge. I scrolled down to the link you posted for the 3 piece hurricane gouges and read through the description and I didn’t see any reference to an Irish grind. Did you grind them once you got them or do they come with the Irish grind but don’t specify in the description. Thanks

That i know of there isn't a pre grind Irish grind gouge available to purchase. You have to do it yourself. Now, I haven't shopped gouges in 3 years, so things could have changed. I watched a video long ago, and have forgotten what video that was, on how to grind the IG. It isn't hard. I was only turning for less than a year when I switched all my BG into IG. It is a 55° angle. I use the wolverine jig.

As others have said check your belt settings, should be on the lowest speed setting I know I can stall mine on a large turning if I leave it on the high speed. As for the rubber feet check your local hardware store. Mine carries them, package calls them screw bumpers. Package of 4 for a couple dollars. Take one of yours in with you to show them what you want. The ones I have are tapered and get mounted upside down so take one of the mounting screws with you to make sure what you have are long enough, saves a trip back if they are not.
@Wis.Steamjunkie
@Wis.Steamjunkie 5 ай бұрын
I thought that you may be on the high speed pulley setup. Moving the belt to the low speed setup will give you more torque at a given speed if you are still able to attain the speed you want, since you are nowhere close to max speed like you might be with a smaller diameter spindle turning. I didn't see you adjust speed up as you finished turning the outside, but seeing where your rheostat is set for the speed may give you a clue before you open the cover to see which pulley you are on. An old belt would maybe slip, not slow down the lathe. If you are on the lower setting, more speed or lighter cuts are your first options. Hope this helps, Lee

@@KimTippin Also, as crazy as this may sound, You could have a loose connection in the panel on that breaker, or the termination point at the outlet. Every time you bear down on the piece you are turning it will draw more amperage. More amperage means the wire heats and contracts resulting in a poor connection , MORE amp draw, more heating till you ease pressure off and the connection cools and the copper expands. ALWAYS shut off the breaker (preferably the main breaker) before torquing down the connections. Hope this helps. Take Care!
