Speak Confident English

Күн бұрын

Get 4 strategies to help you switch from direct, assertive language to polite, diplomatic language in English.
I created this lesson originally in January 2016 because one of my students was worried her English was too direct. A coworker told she didn’t sound friendly in English.
Since then, I’ve continued to get emails and questions here on KZbin such as:
- How can I be more polite in difficult conversations in English?
- How can I show that I'm friendly and interested in other people in English?
- My coworker said that I sound aggressive when I speak, what can I do?
In some languages, formality and politeness are easier. You may have a formal and informal version of ‘you.’ Or maybe you can change word endings to show politeness.
We don’t have those options in English but in this lesson you’ll know exactly how to switch from direct, clear language to more polite, formal, even diplomatic language in English.
As always, my goal is to help you be flexible in English and have the strategies you need to say what you want, how you want.
For this topic, I have several more examples to help you in my online lesson. You can get that here: www.speakconfidentenglish.com...
In this video, I also mention my lesson on how to be assertive in English. You can find that here: www.speakconfidentenglish.com...

Listening to this lesson brought me back those years 1986 - 1990 when I was first working in an American company located in Zurich, Switzerland; in which there were multi national workers like Swiss, German, English, Canadian, Turkish, Chinese, Singaporean, Vietnamese, SA....In that place I have very seldom heart the world "please". People were so aggressive, sarcasm, gossip...I wished I would find this channel the other days (The internet was not even existed!)!

From research as far as i remember when you use the negative questions it works like suggestion, which is not only the idea to be polite but help someone to make decision. For e.g. when you say : "don't you think we should do something... "easer is to get answer, "no i don't" This strategy has a power and we need to remember that when we want to achieve something.
