Imran’s take on Hades was SPOT.ON. Hades successful “contextualized a rogue lite/like” with a perfect balance of story, combat, and a fun and interesting preparation before each run. And Hades is the first rogue-lite I’ve ever actually played and it just pulled me in.

Saying FF7R is what restored your faith in Sqenix shows you haven't played FF14. The Shadowbringers storyline is one of the best RPG experiences out there and that's coming off the amazing storylines of the other expansions.

Typed that on my phone while I was listening to this, but to expand on that I do mean this in a much more genuine way than it sounds. If you were impressed by FF7R's storyline, and you have any interest in tab-target MMO's, FF14's expansions culminating in Shadowbringers is one of the best RPG experiences let alone as an MMORPG experience. What they did with Remake was very bold and interesting, but to me it's part of the track record of FF14's expansions and going into FF16, which is being made by Yoshi-P from FF14. As a major Final Fantasy fan it's been a great few years for me.

True Shadowbringers is amazing and I love it. But I didn't like it as much as I liked FFVIIR. Characters just didn't click with me as much. Don't get me wrong, characters are still amazing in XIV, but FFVIIR characters are just insanely good to me. Same for music. FFVIIR music is easily no.1 game/movie OST in 10 years. Beyond hyped for the new expansion, XVI and VIIR pt2.

What a year for gaming Personally..I came back to playstation.. bought both switches.. dumped xbox.. played everything I missed from 2016- now... Tlou2 is a masterpiece and will live with me forever. FF7R lost me after bringing me to flower girl..I played 0 minutes after chapter 8 P5R, GoT, Immortals, Hades, Nioh2, Doom Eternal were all fun and great. FF7R and !3 Sentinels Aegis Rim tied for my personal favorites, nice to see FF7R gets the end of the year acclaim it deserved after being overlooked in most other discussions by other channels and sites.

What I've noticed is that the channels releasing their lists later (ie a couple of weeks after NY) have been the channels promoting how good FF7R is. Which might be because they're more considered and aren't attempting to get videos out fast in order to ride the top ten algorithm hype. Also 13 Sentinels is amazing. Pity it got released so late in the year (surrounded by new consoles and games like Cyberpunk) that a lot of people slept on it. And it's in that weird spot that it can't be consiered (and will be forgotten) by next years considerations. They should have pushed it into Jan' or Feb' release windows.

@@aoe41015 I'm not sure about that because wouldn't exclude exclusives? They have these current gen consoles and access to the game (some we know have played it). Plus they nom' Astro's Playroom. I would perhaps agree with its absence if they only include new games but Personal Royal (basically an expansion) and FF7RE are both in the lists so there's no reason Demon Souls should at least be nominated by somebody. I mean Bless' nominated Cyberpunk ffs. Clearly they don't care much for FromSoft games but its absence (even in honorable mentions) just comes off as weird.

Final Fantasy VII Remake matches my own game of the year, but it's no disrespect to Naughty Dog and what they delivered. Going into this year and both games were highly anticipated and I blind bought both Final Fantasy VII Remake & The Last of Us Part 2. Both could have put out stories that played safe but both took the risk of trying something different - something they knew would split opinion. In the end one story was a hit and one was a miss for me. But the fact both had the ball's to take the risk, to shoot for the star's, ensures I'm blind buying the next numbered Final Fantasy & the next Naughty Dog game day 1 again.

FF7Remake definitely deserves the #1 spot Ghost of Tsushima is a VERY close 2nd for me. While FF7R does have it's issues these are either minor or are due to technical limitations, there is no other game released in 2020 that created the insane amount of online discussions, from the ending to side quests to deep lore dives all the way to Max Dudes 4 level breakdown of the story I'm personally still following theory discussions and am still mind blown by the implications of the ending and how it frames the Remake as a continuation of the compilation and not a "remake" of it. Can't wait for part 2

I do. I loved the first TLOU. Second one really felt forced to me. It didn't click with me at all emotionally, it made me dislike the things I previously liked in the first game. Especially characters. I know I'm not the only one. And I truly wanted to like it. FFVIIR is pure genius narrative. But you have to know FFVII universe to fully understand it, since it's a complex sequel to the OG game and compilation stuff.

I have the exact opposite opinion of Imran where I think Ellie’s half absolutely sucks from a story and gameplay perspective, and Abby’s is actually interesting both mechanically and story wise (except for all the parts Ellie’s side absolutely spoils). That game has the weirdest sense of stopping tension I’ve seen in a game all year.

I actually appreciated the lack of "mystery" in Miles Morales. I thought the game did a good job of playing with my expectations of how the pacing of this kind of superhero story plays out. I love that we immediately revealed who the villain was because I, the player, figured it out. It's not fun for me as an audience member to wait for characters to figure something out that I already know. I also thought the surprises for me came in smaller moments. The unique elements of latino (represent!) Identity, the ensemble cast of previously unknown characters and even the cool moment like when Rio learns Miles' secret and her reaction to it skipping the usual parent trope beats.

But seriously, I remember playing Arkham Knight and figuring out the Knight's identity almost immediately and being so frustrated when the eventual reveal happened cuz I had already figured it out 10 hours prior lmao

I totally agree that knowing more than the protagonist is frustrating n these reveals often feel feckless but this is easily avoidable with better writing. It seems strange to praise a game for essentially admitting right off the bat that its got nothing up its sleeve. In the case of MM in particular I dont think it matters as much because the strength of the narrative experience lies in its character work, its world and its exploration of its core themes which I think it does very well but in general it seems like we've gotten so used to such bad writing for so long in film/tv/games that now were praising narratives for just admitting they got nothing outright.

@@Hoopla10 with all respect you've probably picked the worst example. Columbo is a lot like MattLock. It's not a who dun it but more of a how he figures out who dun it. Miles Morales doesn't play out like that at all, there is no special storytelling in the way the character discovers who the villain is. Maybe an argument can be made about how he figures out the villains motive but just watching footage on a phone isn't an explosively interesting way of discovering this. The games story telling does play out pretty predictably. Still fun though. I just don't think this is really an apt comparison. Also who references Columbo in 2020 anyway?

I didn't play the original but knew the jist of the story beats and it still exceeded my expectations with the twists and turns it took. I remember basically day dreaming about walking the streets of Midgar back in 2015 and this game was exactly how I pictured it all those years ago

Loved the discussion, but I gotta say that the system is weird. The fact that KFs GOTY is a game that no one considered their personal Game of the Year seems odd to me. Can't be mad at FF7R, because I LOVED that game. My Top 5 of 2020 are: 1) TLOU2; 2) FF7R; 3) GoTsu; 4) Ori 2; 5) Demon's Souls
