For me, The Last of Us did indeed do something that hadn't been done before. And that is emotional attachment to character because of how well the marriage of acting and storytelling worked. I don't think any game had nailed that aspect up to that point, and honestly not too many have done it since. I very rarely give a shit about the story in games, I'm usually a gameplay is king sort of person. But on the story side I had never been that invested in what was going on, on par with a great film. And experiencing what that feels like in a video game was a new and pretty spectacular thing. I would imagine other people feel the same way and thats why it's so highly regarded, not for any stellar gameplay.
@captgeech4 жыл бұрын
@@HermanFalckHow i'm sure thats the case for a lot of people too. but yeah for me, personally, I think ME2 and Uncharted have really interesting and entertaining stories, but if I saw them as movies with the same acting I'd think it felt a little on the cheesy side, which would in turn take me out of it a bit. That's me though, I know there are plenty of people that aren't bothered by it at all. In my book TLOU is on a totally different level on that front.

I agree with Imran *to an extent.* I totally get the feeling that Naughty Dog games can feel safe, especially mechnically. I don't think that makes them bad, I think it just makes them safe - which seems to be where he backpedalled to as well. These games are extemely well crafted and they deliver their vision, even if that vision is sort of vanilla as far as gameplay goes. I don't think every new game *has* to break new ground in gameplay to be considered good. Speaking specifically of TLOU's story though; the plot itself isn't super unusual, and it does contain zombie tropes, but the plot isn't what's impressive. The impressive part is the nuanced characterisation and performances. The subtlety and gradation in the characters, and how their behaviours are depicted against their motivations, is phenomenal. And it mixes lightly with gameplay here and there, such as when Ellie is so emotionally distant she doesn't show up when Joel goes to boost her to a ledge. You might be tempted to say "eh, it's good as far as games go", but if you're including other mediums in the discussion, are we really talking about games anymore? As far as I'm concerned, TLOU at the time - within the gaming medium - had the most "finessed" characterisation and performance I'd ever seen, and that's why it's special IMO.

Naughty dog games need to innovate gameplay more. Their storytelling and world building and the attention to detail is some of the best in the industry, however their gameplay is just generic at times. Uncharted has basic shooting and gunplay and kill rooms. I do think 4 innovated the way combat worked with its vertical levels and stealth and grappling hook. The last of us also has basic stealth/survival elements but I think it actually works because of the harsh tone and reality of the story. I still think naughty dog are one of the top 3 studios making games right now. I do think they are doing it from the gameplay leaps they are making for the PS4 though.

Shut up yes I agree with you about gameplay being pretty simple in previous games. Uncharted 4 did improve on it but I don’t think that franchise ever really needs a complex combat and traversal system. I don’t have a problem with ND’s gunplay but if somebody wants to design a game to be purposely inaccurate, they should use a lock-on system similar to The Getaway or old Resident Evil games. Don’t give players the illusion of precision if you want to ultimately hinder it. Also if the ‘health’ system in Uncharted is his luck running out, why use red on the screen. Players will obviously read that as blood, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst’s ‘Focus Shield’ does this alot better and communicates to the player that you are harder to hit in motion and that it isn’t ‘health’.

Imran is on fire with his BOTW explanation: the game ends when your engagement isn't there anymore. I got burned out of it shortly after release and I never really finished the game before this year when I decided to go back to it and spent quite a long time thinking: "What is this game for me, what are my goals and when does it end?", It took me a while to decide: "I'm going to defeat Ganon after I've discovered and cleared all 120 shrines"...suddenly there's reason to explore yet having it be finite and goal-oriented which is what I needed. I feel like Assassin's Creed Odyssey is the ultimate 'todo-list-o-phile' game and I wish those elements were in BOTW to give it more concrete engagement.

Breath of the Wild is in fact, not as great as the media has made it out to be. Is it a good game? Yes! Is it that amazing? No. Breath of the Wild is Nintendo's version of Assassin's Creed with more mundane tasks like the cooking. The inventory system is a convoluted. You travel around a large world ticking things off lists and opening up the world via towers. You can climb almost anything you see EXCEPT when it rains. Where have we seen these before? That's right Assassin's Creed. Honestly if this game had a different title it wouldn't have gotten the praise it's received. I believe it gets looked at through rose colored glasses because Zelda is in the title. What's even crazier is Blessing says he hates that argument but doesn't even try to build a rebuttal against it. It's still a great game, but not a 10 out of 10 like people have said. I do not agree that it is an empty open world though. In my opinion, controversial or not, BotW wasn't even the best game that year. I can respect everyone for their arguments for or against it but I'd like to have someone who feels like those who agree it's not that great be on a show and go up against someone like Blessing.

They want it to be perfect so they can say Sony is perfect and most importantly to them for whatever reason "better" than whatever they want it to be. Its a childish mentality with literally no value to anyone but the giant corporation but this is the world we live in. Personally no Ps exclusive has motivated me to get the console or even feel like I'm missing out. There are plenty of good/great games but yes most of the 1st party games have an essence that feels generic, not bad but not as amazing as some filks make it out to be. These kinds of discussions often bring up contradictions in people's takes. For example Imran talks about story tropes, but then loves certain JRPG's, action adventures and so on like Yakuza etc that are full of them. In other words, even based on his own preferences, he should understand it's not narrative innovation that matters, but execution, and ND executes it better than most. To me it seems to me like people like him simply prefer zany, exaggerated or dramatised, unrealistic narratives or characters vs well realised or more grounded ones. I do dislike how he tries to reduce the talent and writing quality that goes into achieving that narrative, characterisation or gameplay quality and competency, as just being down to having lots of money. That's a very reductive and somewhat insulting (to the developers) notion. Countless AAA games have or had similar or even higher dev budgets than TLOU, but still didnt come close in terms of narrative execution or gameplay (Quantum Break, The Order 1886, Call of Duty, Tomb Raider (new ones), Max Payne 3, Halo 4/5, Gears of War 4/5 etc).

Would loved to have heard what Greg finds "ambitious" about TLOU's story. I agree with Imran that it was incredibly well acted and polished (where the money comes in) which made it seem more "ambitious" than it actually was. And Ellie being gay was in the DLC and not even hinted to in the main game so I don't think that counts. BUT....I think TLOU is underrated in gameplay. I actually loved the game specifically for that and not the story, even though I found that entertaining. It is by far the best survival shooter I've ever played. No other TPS I've played has more satisfying gunplay and more immersive and weighty melee combat

Some of mine would be... - Breath of the Wild is a good game, but incredibly overrated. - Resident Evil 6 is a good game with arguably the most emotional moments in the entire series. - Mass Effect Andromeda, while flawed, is still a good game. - The stories of Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War (2018) are overrated, and arguably the weaker parts of those games when compared to the gameplay.

Horizon is a tale of two stories to me. The story dealing with Aloy finding out about who she really is and what happened in the past is gripping, but the modern-day story with the different tribes and the conflicts are not that interesting.
@mathyouclem4 жыл бұрын
I found the story in Horizon regarding what happened in the past to be intriguing, but Aloy discovering who she was I found convoluted, and the "present day" stuff just felt inconsequential. As for God of War, it's not that I didn't like it, it was good, but I feel it's story was way overhyped by the media. It didn't think it did anything new to the parent/child dynamic that we've seen for years in games like The Last of Us or The Walking Dead except make them gods. The set pieces were huge and cool, but I didn't find the overall story to be anything special.

Both Imran and Greg mention missing certain aspects of two games' gameplay mechanics or systems. This made me think of the recent Playstation patent for "helpful" AI in-game. This seems like the perfect situation, especially in today's age when you're distracted by your phone or something during gameplay or explanations of mechanics, for the Sony AI assistant to pop up a little later to nudge to if you haven't used a newly introduced mechanic. This will definitely help in those situations where a game feels like it's stagnating when in fact the player is just missing a certain newly introduced mechanic.

While Imran is right that the Last of Us doesn't create new ground narratively, I don't think this should negatively impact its quality much. Very very few stories are "ambitious" in such a way that they do something really and truly new. Virtually all stories are iterative. At least for me, how much I enjoy a story is rarely impacted by how novel it feels. I've read plenty of weird experimental fiction (English major) that did have all kinds of crazy story structure, or other things that DID truly push the envelope. And while they were often very interesting, none of them have stuck with me the way the Last of Us has. I think much of this is because of the medium that the Last of Us's story is delivered in. The characters and the world impacted me because of how cohesive the details were, how smartly written the dialogue was, and how, as a player, I experienced the journey with the characters, whether scared in the snow, or feeling the emotional respite with the giraffes afterword. The visuals, acting, graphics and music all came together to create this, and not all of it is "story" in the strictest sense. However, the quality with which it was delivered together was incredibly effective in a way that WAS groundbreaking for games. I also do agree with Imran and Blessing's point that Naughty Dog games dictate how their played. They are like theme park attractions in some ways. They are showy thrill rides, but they are very linear. I remember steal thing my way through the encounter after the Hotel in The Last of Us and the game straight up broke because the player was supposed to be spotted so that Ellie could help with the rifle. I do think the systems, such as they are, are really fun. Despite aiming being a tad floatier than some shooters, I enjoyed the enemy encounters in all the Naughty Dog games. However, if the gunplay was all there was to these games, they would be 7's and not 10's. It is certainly all the other stuff I discussed above that makes Naughty Dog one of my favorite developers.

As someone who is a massive Dark Souls fan, I think the problem isn't that the combat doesn't work for most games, but just that it's often not done as well as it could be. For instance, Assassins Creed Origins and Odyssey have Dark Souls combat, but things like dodging, parrying etc just don't feel as good as in From Software's games. Its things like that which a lot of developers can't seem to get right.
@SuperBeybladerocks4 жыл бұрын
@@BasketCase-rr7tx while I can see why you say that, I feel that dark souls combat really only works for those types of games and the whole dodge and parry system is great when it has its own twist like GOW which does have DS inspiration but it's extremely refined to the point where I like it better than DS III combat. Also I don't think DS combat is as intuitive really, but from software really out did themselves with Sekiro which was as rewarding as was challenging.

Halo’s significance is the shift it brought. We hadn’t had coop as a key part of a shooter on a console in a while. Felt like it hadn’t been since side scrollers that coop was a big deal among the biggest of titles. Coop campaign at that time just was huge. Then factor in its when LAN parties for consoles really took off. I had fire fighter friends who bought an Xbox and Halo so when they were at the fire station they wouldn’t get whooped during their LAN parties while they waited for a call. Dudes who hadn’t played video games since Atari were now spending hours on practicing to be able to beat co-workers. Have to remember the context of the time period.

@ryanwest51794 жыл бұрын
My Controversial Opinions: 1. Breath of the Wild is a 7 out of 10 video game. The game IS empty and in a bad way. Because there isn’t anything to do a lot of the time. There aren’t enough things inbetween shrines to keep me invested. There are just guardians, enemy camps and terrain. What I craved in BotW was the shrines. But right when I started to have a good time in a shrine... it was over and I had to spend another 30 minutes looking for another. BotW needed traditional dungeons or make me feel like I’m doing dungeon-like things inbetween shrines. Also, the weapons breaking sucks. Happens way too often. 2. Naughty Dog games are good, but no great. And definitely not amazing masterpieces. Uncharted is boring. The characters are cool and the story is fine, but the gameplay is so boring. The characters and story don’t do enough to make this okay. I just think the Uncharted games are the epitome of a 7/10 first party game. The Last of Us is much better, but still not a 10/10 for me. Great story and characters, but again the gameplay is just fine. So much time is spent slowly walking to find a ladder to put against a wall, or getting a pallet for Ellie to cross water. The Last of Us is an 8-8.5 out of 10 game. 3. Kingdom Hearts II is not a great game and it is significantly worse a game than the original Kingdom Hearts. Kingdom Hearts II changes the battle system from an engaging action RPG to an incredibly easy button masher. I literally closed my eyes during battles and just mashed X and came out victorious. Kingdom Hearts II also changes into a linear experience. It doesn’t allow you to explore your favorite Disney world like the first game did. Instead, it’s just narrow pathways with hordes of heartless sprinkled throughout. There’s also the horrid 2 hour beginning as Roxas. The only aspect of KHII that I’ll give it over the original is the camera. They fixed the camera. But that’s it. 4. Not sure if this is controversial or not but, Red Dead Redemption II is the most impressive video game to date. It has so many systems working at once and has an active, living and breathing world whether you’re interacting with it or not. It somehow manages to do all of this without any of it feeling gimmicky. It’s so incredibly dynamic in almost every aspect of the game. It’s the greatest achievement in game design.

DanV900 I don’t believe it’s clunky at all. It is very slow though. But that’s intentional. Rockstar made the game knowing it wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Some don’t like the mundane tasks and riding a horse for 5-10 minutes to reach your destination. I personally love it. Although that’s just my opinion and not necessarily associated with my controversial one.
@ryanwest51794 жыл бұрын
Emjayography I said that I enjoyed the shrines. Best part of the game. But just as a shrine gets going, it’s over. And I spend another 30ish minutes searching for another. It’s why I wish the game had traditional dungeons so that I’d have as much fun as I had in a shrine for more than just 3 minutes at a time. But yeah, I don’t really feel like finding the 900 seeds is something of great fun to do inbetween these shrines. They’re just... there. And you get a shitty(pun intended) reward for finding them all. I’ve tried to love Breath of the Wild 3 separate times now. The most recent time I played about 25 hours according to my Switch’s game clock. Didn’t love the majority of my time in any attempt. Although I don’t think the game was bad, just not great by any means imo. Definitely in the bottom tier of Zelda games if I were to personally rank them.

It was a good transition into 3D animations and the pokemon they added were all great compared to gen 5 that added alot, but weren't as high quality. But maybe that's just my nostalgia talking. 2. My controversial opinion, which I didn’t have time to offer on patreon, is that Kingdom Hearts 1 is the best of the series. I think KH 2 was a terrible drop from the first, with little to no exploration or story, wonder and magic. KH2 was all about combat. Thats pretty much all you did: fight and watch cutscenes. KH1 felt like a world (worlds) I was exploring, had heart, and a sense of Disney magic. KH2 tried to be too epic and dark, and lost its sense of wonder. Plus, it never felt like a direct sequel to 1. I always thought KH2 was going to be about finding Mickey from wherever he got trapped at the end of the first one, and that never happened.

1. 2D SONIC GAMES are based on a flawed concept and don't work (namely: running through the level as fast as you can while by definition you can't even see what's on the screen to react to it (limited viewport / limited framerate).) 2. 3D Games that have manual Camera Right Control stick CAN NOT have a bad camera, it's basically just the player that doesn't know how to position the camera while playing. (though there is a minor aspect of the camera having a hitbox and getting stuck) 3. Games should generally not have a sprint button, it's the reason we've invented control stick...and if they need to have a sprint function, FFS don't ever put it on the face buttons because you can never sprint and position the camera properly. 4. 2D GTA games blow 3D GTA games out of the water. 3D GTA games all have mediocre game mechanics with a great sandbox and fun story. 5. All Pokemon games are the same game since '97 and don't even make an effort to forward the series mostly because they print money. 6. Mass Effect (1) is such a bad game that I'm genuinely astonished this game got positive buzz, sales and a sequel. (even if me2/3 are some of the best games that generation and maybe even of all time)

I can almost agree to this but the 2d games weren't really made so you can easily run through everything. Its rewarding moments of speed punctuated with platforming

I love all the salty Imran haters that can't handle opinions that differ from their own. Stories aren't important to me but are a nice bonus if the game is good enough. If I had played TLOU before 3 Uncharted games and every other game that it took gameplay ideas from(Audibly laughed at the detective vision) I would have enjoyed it more. That and zombies( I know not technically zombies) is a turn off for me. I played several hours and just got bored tbh. Finished the story on KZbin. TLOU 2 looks more interesting on the gameplay side so I'll give it a shot when its on a good sale. P.S. I think I am the only one that likes the flood in Halo. That section is a little long I admit but I loved how it changed up the gameplay from a more cover based approach to a more arena style shooter like Doom or Quake. It was a nice shake up. I played the first one again recently on Game Pass. I think it still holds up well for the style of game it is. But I also remember the era before ADS was the norm so...
