5:40 I actually didn't notice that upon my first watch of the episode. I personally think that wobble effect is illustrating the heat distortion from the hot pan, very cool and immersive
@Tom-mb2ji6 ай бұрын
When I see that parallax in the basilisk scene, it looks like Laios and the basilisk are circling each other rather than just jumping up & down. That may have been the intent.
@zinzolin146 ай бұрын
That "wobbling effect" happening when Senshi is frying the mandrake might represent the heated air distorting what we see, kinda like a mirage. So it makes sense that the chopsticks would also be affected. Coupled with how it creates subtle movements of the food frying, the effect serves two different purposes.

Thank you for another great breakdown! I agree that I’m bit disappointed by the episode, mostly due to the loss of the dry humor from the basilisk section (the whole “he’s getting cold!” “Move him near the fire!” while Senshi is going at his usual pace, lol). The episode still managed to make me laugh at multiple points,, so there’s that at least. I really liked the section where Laios got burned too! But yeah, I hope the shortcuts are to save money for the big stuff coming up.

They did rush and skipped a lot hence the sensation of dissatisfaction. I wish they fully animated that antidote cooking section

Love how you point out stuff in the animation like the extreme forced perspective during the basilisk fight, and the unmoving painting. During that bit of the episode, I didn't even notice our group in the background, so I was surprised when you started drawing!

Love the analysis on the bat carrying the mandrake!! It’s a lot more physics involved than I would otherwise discover myself and I liked how you broke it down! I’d love to see more of this in the future :] As for the episode itself I think we share the same sentiment. I understand they had to rush things to get through the series, but speeding through the manga about the importance of taking your time resting well and eating well felt very off haha 😅 I can only hope it gets better from now on!

I wholeheartedly agreed that this episode felt "calmer" for all the sense of urgency it had in the manga. Besides the fact that some shots were more economical than others. All in all, really enjoying the series so far, kudos for analysing the bat trajectory and how it affected the mandrake 😱

I was pretty bummed how the basilisk cooking scene turned out. The comedic pacing was not there at all since they needed to get to the mandrakes asap. Hopefully this is just a temporary symptom, it did feel very much that they wanted episode 3 to start with the living armor so they had to awkwardly cram three entirely separate chapters into one episode. Perhaps when the story becomes less episodic, this will become less of an issue.
@LunarJaguar10 ай бұрын
Yeah. Before episode 2 was announced, I was wondering how they were going to adapt chapters 3-7 since it seemed like they were going to just do 2 chapters per episode. It gets funky when you realize that between Basilisk and omelette (which go nicely together) and the 2 part living armor chapters, there’s Kakiage which definitely can’t carry an episode on its own. I still enjoyed the episode despite its flaws, but I just hope that my friends (who haven’t read the manga) will trust me and stick with it- and that the adaptation does justice to the source material.
@tintedpalette65310 ай бұрын
@@LunarJaguarI have friends who are watching it anime-only and they seemed to enjoy episode 2 as much as the first one. I think this is the curse of knowing too much about the manga cause we notice the lost potential, but to a blind viewer it’s still an adequate experience. We’ve yet to get to the real juicy stuff so I’m saving my final thoughts until the season concludes. But I don’t think we need to worry about people losing total interest due to these weird pacing quirks.
@LunarJaguar10 ай бұрын
@@tintedpalette653 that’s true. I’m still ecstatic about the fact that we even have an anime. Most of my anime-only friends are enjoying it too, with the only exception being the one who prefers action over comedy, so that’s more of a genre thing. Still super excited to share it with them :D

The rearrangement of the basilisk intro sequence is actually the only bit I had a nit pick with in the episode (actually somehow didn't notice the 12 second still, but that's a fair criticism). In both versions, Laios remarks from the bushes how running away is the worst thing to do, but it makes a lot more sense with the noobie getting chased around rather than his own party member who he'd absolutely help out right away as a basilisk is a decently serious threat. This also made Chilchuk whispering to Marcille about pretending not to know Laios after his "performance" kinda weird as they are now placed right next to the noobie party instead of still being in the bushes. I guess it goes with the theme of the dungeon of Marcille not feeling useful, but they overplayed her helplessness a bit for my taste, with her being a powerful mage and all.

Personally, I thought the second episode was better than the first. Admittedly though, I'm not an animation expert so my opinion was more influenced by the pacing and dialogue delivery. The pacing of the chicken cooking was definitely rushed and, as you said, lost that drawn out quality it was supposed to have, but that was a small section compared to the first epsidoe. It felt like the pacing for the whole first episode was kind of off and the jokes didn't land because of it. I felt like the comedic timing of the second episode was better done. I also felt like the voice actors, in the English dub, were getting more comfortable in their roles and line delivery so that also helped convey the humour better.
@trueken472810 ай бұрын
Yeah, after this episode I have noticed the way they use bgms in the anime is abysmal to say the least, not that the bgms itself are bad but how they timed it during some scenes. A very noticeable example of it is the scene after they finished cooking their meals because when the anime presented the meal with a sfx, the bgm still continues without pausing or fading in volume even while they are eating and talking. It just takes the immersion out when all you hear when they eat is the dialogue and bgm only, its just bland. What it should've been for me is after they showcased their meal the music will fade away and we would only hear the ambient noises and echoes of the dungeon, rustling of the party's fabric clothing, tapping and scraping sounds of their utensils, and faint noises of them chewing their food so dialogues and bits during their meals would have been a lot more serious, impactful and funnier.

A little thing that bothered me when I first watched the episode, was when the poisoned dude was fed the antidote and his party member just sat there and bawled her eyes out with her mouth open, Marcille said off-screen "Sorry about that" or something like that, but the tone in her voice sounded different enough for me to think that's what the party member said, I really thought there, that they forgot to animate her lips as she said that lmao. I didn't notice the very long still shot, since I watch sub all the time so in situations like those I'm too occupied in reading the dialogue. I still enjoyed the episode and hope they've saved the budget for the crazier chapters.

Every drawing or every frame cost money, since animators are paid per frame. I worked in western style animation but it's the same principle so, secondary motions specially in japanese style animation is avoided because they are cutting cost. That's also why they animate in 3's or exposure in 3frames per drawing instead of 2's like in regular Western TV series.
@indigo12966 ай бұрын
A bit late to this series and I appreciate the insights and analysis! I loved the manga and was very excited to see it animated, but even to my untrained eye it was evident they were working on a less than ideal budget. One thing I'd like to comment is that while it's nice to point out where the animation isn't good enough or could be better, all that is assuming an abundance of budget/staff. While there are no doubt many scenes they could've placed more budget/effort into, I'd be more interested to hear if you felt that the budget/attention was spent on the "right" places in each episode, or if there was another scene you would've committed more resources on. It could really help highlight the importance of the director's influence on the episode as well.

That dialogue scene with a still doesn't seem like a money problem to me, more like a storyboard one. Too much dialogue in the same scene is a direction issue imo.
