Yeah, they definitely could have done more with it though. You can button mash through a lot of the game (especially once you get Yufie), there’s only specific enemies that really require strategy. It’s a waste of time having depth if you don’t need to use it most of the time.

@BasketCase-rr7tx 16 is waaaaayyy more button mashy, you can get through every fight just expending your moves without strategy. Rebirth has that with the basic enemies like wolves, but there's so much variety with enemies that have move sets and abilities that directly negate yours that you do have to think about what you're doing and change things up. You can become very efficient in it when youre familiar with an enemy, but as the game progresses, they keep introduce enemy types to keep things fresh

I wouldn’t say Metaphor’s “better” than Rebirth. There are aspects that both of them do better than each other, but I wouldn’t say one is better than another. They’re my two favorite games of the year and I have beat both of them almost 100% both so I’d say that’s reasonable to say.

Man i know its a preference thing and i get it turn based type games aren't my thing either definitely when when comes to BG3 when your not even guaranteed to hit your targets, but imo Greg would love BG3 so much. It took me a bit to get use to it but i love it its one of my favorite games of all time.

My hottest take is that this generation has yet to showcase the high prices of consoles were worth the purchase. I have had a great time with a lot of great releases from the 2020s onwards but I still reflect on the PS3/360 and PS4/X-Box One generations more for their "Next gen" titles that were pushing their boundaries at the time. Currently in 2024, looking back at the past 4 years of gaming, I don't think I will make the jump to the next generation within the launch year like I did with my Series S and PS5

As a person with a job, wife and kids I had to spend every spare second in the last month playing it to beat it. Kind of burnt me out by the end especially with how long the final stretch seemed. Having some time off watching shit and not playing anything for maybe a week. Great game and story.

Everything greg is describing and explaining, boyyyyyyy, i know that feeling all too well because im currently going through it. Im sitting on a shit load of games that i know i will like but cant find the desire to play more than 5 minutes because im not feeling it at the moment. Elden ring was the cause of it, believe it or not. I dont care about the combat at all, but i do like everything else. By the time i finished the dlc and tried moving on to my next game which wouldve been tears of the kingdom i was burnt out. Even now, trying to find smaller games, but none of them are really clicking. Its a good thing fighting games are my go tos cause ive been burnt out for the last 3 months. I may need to try out case of the golden idol game.

Greg's energy is defo resonating with me. Like he says, there's so many great games out there, but sometimes you need THAT specific itch to be scratched. The only game that I think could do that for me is Path of Exile 2. I wonder if Greg will check it out too considering he loves Diablo.

My hot take: there has never been a good Western RPG, let alone a great one. Every single Western RPG is less fun and less impactful than even an average D&D session with your friends. A large facet of this is that they don't have a defined mechanical identity: like how well action RPGs use active combat, strategy RPGs use grid-based combat, and Eastern RPGs use turn-based combat. Most of the time they try to copy an action-like system (often 1st person shooting) but never make something on the level of even an average FPS. And as far as the aesthetic facets of that subgenre? All uniquely awful. None of them have compelling art styles and all just go for photorealism. Music is generic orchestral slop at worst, and E tier Celtic infusion at best. It features the worst storytelling and writing in all of the medium of video games, with the least impactful choices ever put to paper. The worldbuilding is always so generic and derivative. Even those that try to reskin the setting (Fallout, as an example) fall into most, if not still all, of these trappings.

I totally get Greg’s feeling though. When you just get off of an amazing game that you really connected with, it’s hard to figure out what you’re in the mood for next.
