It's far more economically efficient for them to manufacture a design with the button at the bottom, because the entire circuitboard with literally everything but the battery is at the bottom. There's a short custom ribbon cable that runs from the PCB to the battery, which is less than ideal from an electrical engineering design, but is their solution for balancing the weight of the device better. Putting the button at the top would mean putting another long cable that runs the full length of the device internally, which would have potential to cause problems or cost far more in R&D than it's worth.

Wish there was more mention of the Oasis than the quick on screen caption. As an Oasis owner, I feel really disillusioned with the current line because I can’t get something as simple as page turn buttons. I love the Kindle for all the reasons you mentioned up top, but keeping a micro USB cable around just for that is archaic. A Colorsoft Oasis with USB-C would easily have been a $400 purchase I would have made in an instant but I think I’m just going to keep waiting.
@13robj14 күн бұрын
I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been waiting for kindle updates as my oasis has lived a rough life, and an oasis with USB-C, color, and their page turn buttons would’ve been a day 1 purchase for me. I’ll be sitting out for this round of kindles instead.

To solve this issue I got a set of cables with magnetic adapters - micro USB, Lightning, USB-C. Works quite well. I got a used Kindle Voyage some years ago but unfortunately it kept turning pages by accidental touches on the screen. Tried the previous gen Oasis (no backlight temperature) but compared to the voyage directly, the contrast was noticeably worse. So i ended up selling the Oasis. There is apparently an option to disable the touch screen page turns on the Voyage by jailbreaking it and enabling a hidden option only available on waterproof paperwhite models, but haven’t tried that yet

The number one thing I want from a kindle is legible, zoomable images that have their captions on the same page. Stuff like color or higher resolution etc is far less important. In fact in think it’ll only dilute the market positioning of kindle, making it compete more with regular tablets.

I've never used an eReader, but recently picked up a used surface duo and found that it is a good replacement for carrying a paperback in my bag for downtime reading. My wife uses a tablet but the form factor didn't fill that habitual, thumb in the middle, book position that helps me relax and get lost in a book. The duo does that. What a shame it didn't survive.

While I'm planning on moving away from Kindle and Amazon in my future ereader endeavors, I do appreciate that they'll be bringing stuff like color e-ink to more people, which, as when Apple does something, could cause some cascading effects within the industry via that newfound consumer awareness causing more desire for those features. Hopefully brands like Kobo and Boox can benefit from more interest in e-ink with color as interest causes a boon in the technology. Ditto foldable e-ink devices, which I'd also love to see (something I once tweeted at you about, even) if that does end up being in Amazon's crosshairs.
A foldable e-ink is going to be phenomenal ( just a folding interior screen, no external one ,no cameras , a metal back or a plastic one )

I can imagine a hinged device with three screens. One color on the front of the device, for the cover of books or content with images, but then inside two higher pixel density black and white displays that create the illusion of reading from a true book.

a surface-style kindle would honestly be a near-instant buy for me if the price was fair enough. i love my ipad 10 for reading, but oh my gosh a surface duo with an e-ink display (and hopefully stylus support like the scribe too) could pull me away from my fruit tablet when it comes to consuming words and notation. my ipad is my first born child, but ohhhh that concept is tempting!

I was kind of disappointed in the Colorsoft, to be honest. It uses the same Kaleido 3 screen as other readers, so the display is only marginally better, and it's more expensive. Instead, I opted for the Kobo Libra Colour. It's got a very similar color screen, and it's pen-enabled. I think that makes it a better value. You should check that out for your next review. :)

I've easily saved hundreds ever since I bought a kindle. Especially by borrowing ebooks from your local library via libby. I've never understood the need for color. I feel like if you read a lot of comics you'd prolly want to do that on an iPad. The price tag is steep. I don't think paying almost x2 the price enhances your reading experience by x2. I really hate the power button's location. I accidentally lock my screen all the time. Especially if you're trying to use it one handed. I much rather have a side button to turn the page and move the power button to the top.

Just updated my 11th gen paper white to the latest software version (15.7.1). It feels way faster so if you’re looking at getting a kindle I’d recommend looking for a used 11th gen. Downsides don’t outweigh the benefits currently for me.
