A pro that I absolutely love about the Kindle that wasn't mentioned in the video is the dictionary. When I encounter new words, all I need to do is long press on the word and the dictionary just pops up. It's very convenient because I don't have to get my phone to look up its meaning. I always keep my phone away from me when I'm reading so I won't get distracted or be tempted to check my social media accounts.

Thanks so much for this review! I am a die-hard physical book lover too (I love a colorful bookshelf) and I’ve been debating for a longgg time whether or not I would actually use a Kindle often enough to warrant purchasing it. For now, I occasionally use the Kindle app on my phone and I do enjoy the portability (traveling with multiple physical books can be cumbersome) and the extra features like highlighting and the dictionary. Your enthusiastic list of pros is very encouraging (and I oddly enjoy scrolling back and forth to the table of contents lol) so I just might be gifting myself something for the holidays this year. :) Thanks again!!

I have a weird question for you: did you ever notice a difference in your minds ability to create a vivid mental picture from the words you were reading on an e-ink screen? I'm actually not that attached to physical books and would gladly embrace the benefits of ebooks like instant definitions, and features such as X-ray. But whenever I've tried to read on a kindle I've felt a strange blankness in my mind as if it's struggling to create as vivid a mental world from the words I'm reading as it would be if they were in print. I don't know what this could be related to but there has been one study finding that people recalled less from a story they'd just read on an ereader compared to those that read the same story in print. Did you ever experience this? If so did it improve? Your kindle review is the most interesting and entertaining one I've found :-)
@officialblondebookworm4 жыл бұрын
Oliver Relph-Evans Hi Oliver, I cant say I have found that. I’m still loving my kindle but switch between physical books (from my rather large TBR pile!) and ebooks. I love both. Thanks for your lovely comment x
@cutepawhandmade4 жыл бұрын
Maybe it is the format that makes you can't imagine things as vivid as when you read the printed book. I'm a kindle paperwhite user from 2013 till now & sometimes when the margin, line spacing, fonts , or backlight don't feel right to me, I found it difficult to immerse myself into the book. But as soon as I adjust it, it will be fine 😁 not happening everytime though, just in some weird cases 🤭 hope it helps
@JohnDonasco4 жыл бұрын
I think I experienced this when I was reading eBooks on my phone or tablet. It just doesn’t register to my mind quite as vividly. But when I bought a Kindle, the problem went away, it feels like reading a real physical book.

i have my kindle since 4-5 days now and can't say i experience the same as you. it doesn't matter if i read a normal book, with my kindle, or on my PC / smartphone. text is text and generates the same mental images without much difference. depends on the books i read of course.. some storys are better than others and generate more or less vivid images.. but this had nothing to do with the device / format i read the book on for me.

I love hard copies but find digital so much more convenient. I usually read on my iPad often either Overdrive (library) or epubs I find for free. I keep considering the Kindle because of the e-ink rather than computer screen which would be great when reading outdoors or detoxing from constant computer use. Might get one for Black Friday but still undecided. My solution for balancing hard copy books with using digital and audio is I will go ahead and buy the book I truly loved reading and want my own copy of. I will also get most of my hard copies from second hand stores since I don't care if they are a little loved and they are usually much less than new one, sometimes it is a comparable price to the digital copy too

I think this is one of the best reviews for people who are still unsure about switching to a kindle. I'm 19, and I've always been an avid reader since as long as I can remember. last week I stumbled across my mum's old kobo e-reader and my dad convinced me to read a mandatory book for school on it, since it would have been cheaper and immediate. I'm still getting used to it, at first I couldn't convince myself that it would be worth it but I'm slowly adjusting to it. I fully understand your points and your perspective! after all, if one likes reading every way will be worth it.

This was so useful! My husband has offered to buy me a kindle for Christmas and like you, I have always been a bit anti e-reader. I LOVE getting new books, the feel, the smell, the satisfaction of turning the pages and seeing how far you have read/have to go. Also, my Dad is a printer and so everything going digital directly affects his trade. However, I get through SO many, that I have no space left on my shelves and don't always want to charity shop them. I'm hoping I really enjoy using this, but like you, will never completely stop buying physical books altogether. My favourite authors, or particularly beautiful covers will always be bought in physical form, but this is so useful for those books you aren't sure on, but want to give a go as they are also loads cheaper! Can't wait to receive mine on Christmas day and see how I get on. Thanks for putting my mind at ease! Xx

Super informative video - thanks! I'm a long-time Kindle owner who was curious about whether it is time to upgrade. Food for thought: I have a sleeve instead of a cover. The kindle paper white is so sturdy that I don't need a cover when I'm at home. Without a cover it is easier to hold in my hand and it is lighter. Then, if I'm going to a coffee shop or on vacation, I pop it in the sleeve and throw it in my bag.

11 years ago, I was given a kindle from a good friend for my birthday, I was very hesitant to use it, and almost put it on a shelf without ever giving it an honest try. I travel to the VA hospital several times a year, usually staying 3-5 days each time. and was having to carry 7 books each trip, because I normally read 4-6 books a week, and sitting in the hospital there is NOTHING else to do so that goes up a bit. now, after 11 years using it, I could not imagine not having a kindle. I carry 50+ books with me everywhere I go. if you like having it stand while you use both hands, try getting a small inexpensive reader holder. I have one that folds flat, so I can carry it in my wheelchair pouch easily, and set it on any flat surface, to hold the book in perfect position. my holder is infinitely adjustable for angle. also, for charging on the go, I carry a battery backup power bank. I can charge my phone and kindle both several times with the one I have, but there are smaller, lite weight ones that have a smaller amount of power, but still would extend your usability on longer excursions.

I have an older kindle, think it's a gen 3 one, has buttons on the sides to turn pages. Sounds like there's more options to play with in terms of page format on the newer ones and not sure if I should upgrade or not. I do massively prefer reading with it than books sometimes though like going from reading a big fantasy book straining my thumbs to keep the pages open for hours to just holding a thin device right in front of me is just so much nicer. The big con with those same books is it's hard to remember all the characters etc and you want to be flicking around and of course the maps are barely visible and hard to see (with my version anyway, maybe the newer ones are better optimised)

Love this review. I had the very first kindle paper white many years ago, I was unsure at first but soon fell in love with it for all the pros you mentioned, buying a physical book now is a treat. If you haven’t got bookbuds emails it’s a must daily emails with great book deals. But I do miss physically holding a book.

Nice review. I must mention that most reviews, yours included, focus on the personal experience of using a Kindle, the pros and cons, etc. One thing that bothers me about it is being locked into Amazon's ecosystem. You buy only from Amazon. I can't get past the notion that it's a form of surrender to use a Kindle, as convenient as it is, a comfortable prison is still a prison.
@officialblondebookworm3 жыл бұрын
You’re right. My review is very much focussed on my personal experience of using the kindle. When I purchased the kindle, I resigned myself to the fact that my ebooks would be from amazon (or netgalley) but I try to offset this by buying most of my physical books from charity shops. It’s obviously a bit harder to do that at the moment with lockdown but I can’t wait for them to open up again so I can go bargain book shopping! 📚

speaking of the comfortable prison, I think we all are already doing so in other aspects of the internet as well. For example, most of us use the same search engine, Google. We watch videos on the same video platform, KZbin. While there are other search engines like Bing or Ask.com, it's just a much better experience to use Google.

I'm in this situation where I really wanted to buy a kindle but thinking if I should buy now or wait. I'm wondering if amazon will release a new paperwhite next year. I know it is just a rumor but it could also be true looking at the previous timeline of their previous release of product. any thoughts or advise? Thanks a lot!
@officialblondebookworm3 жыл бұрын
I’m afraid I don’t have any advice on this! I have my kindle now and I’m very happy with it so don’t tend to keep a look out for kindle news but this seems to be quite an active comments section so someone else may be able to help. Whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy your kindle xx

do they removed the landscape mode from kindle Paperwhite?
@officialblondebookworm4 жыл бұрын
I must admit I haven’t had any need to read landscape at this stage but from what I’ve read, there is a landscape mode but it doesn’t do it automatically like an iPad or iPhone does. I think you need to do it in the menu or settings xx

How is it when reading a larger book that is condensed down to the 6" size of the Kindle? Do you use your fingers to enlarge the areas you want to read like you would on a tablet or phone?
@officialblondebookworm4 жыл бұрын
B K You can tailor the font size to suit you. I haven’t ever felt the need to enlarge anything.

Hi which is better 8gb or 32gb? Thanks
@officialblondebookworm3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kat, I think it probably depends on how many audio books you’re going to be loading on. Ebooks don’t use much space at all so it really comes down to audio books. I don’t use my kindle for audio books- I tend to use my phone for that so 8gb is more than plenty for me xx

Apparently kindles don’t have an official text to speech feature that can be easily turned on and off but they have an accessibility feature called Voice View that works in a similar way once it’s enabled. Hope this helps

Was given to my son as gift on Dec 31 2019. October 31, 2020 it died. Sucks. And since it was bought by relatives in the US and we are in Asia, theres nothing that we could do...even though the warranty should have been good at that time. It's so slow and laggy. I cant even put pdfs in it because it would just freeze the device. I wish we got one of those BrandX made in China tablets instead. Because if those broke down, I wouldnt be surprised and it would have been value for the money.
