*I just noticed that KZbin's video compression is smoothing the content so much, that you don't really see the ghosting-effect I'm taking about at **9:44**. As I said - it can be annoying (in real life, where you can see it 🙃) if you erase lines often, but isn't an issue otherwise. The writing experience is basic BUT it too is enjoyable as the tactile experience is oh so paper like. That said, when I want a robust writing/research session; I grab my iPad. @@kayw Very Valid Point and is also why I am mostly considering an Onyx Boox Tab X to get an even bigger screen and better software, but I am also waiting to see if they come out with a colour version, if I wait long enough, given I have been researching these e-readers/note takers since I bought my highly disappointing Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ in Dec 2020. That means I doubt I would even buy an upgraded Samsung unless they put in an NFC chips in more tablets which I called them to discuss as so many people could benefit. Currently mostly only cell phones and very rarely tablets have NFC which I consider a very short sighted flaw as the NFC chips as so inexpensive, yet the use value is great. So that is also why I may consider the upcoming Fujitsu Quaderno Gen 3 colour e-reader/note taker when it is reviewed after release as the Quaderno Gen 2 has NFC.

No scratches on the screen from my daily use over the past couple of days and I also applied a little more pressure with the pen for reviewing it thoroughly. I'd say the display is harder than a typical plastic screen protector. But the display is not as scratch resistant as on the Kindle Oasis. On the Oasis you can run a cutter knife over the screen and it's fine. The Scribe's screen is definitely softer - more like the Paperwhite.

The Supernote includes kindle integration which makes it a much better comparison than the reMarkable. The only benefit this appears to have over the Supernote is in-built lighting but that has power consequences in addition to the ‘gap’ problem you raised. Other than that, the Supernote offers far more capability as an e-ink tool.
@ChalidRaqami2 жыл бұрын
You're right, the Kindle integration makes it a compelling alternative. However, Remarkable has a much wider name recognition, so I compared it to that. But I'm planning to make a separate Supernote comparison video in the future.

Will you compare the kindle scribe to the Supernote? I've been thinking of getting a supernote A5 but held back to see how the Amazon Kindle Scribe would fare. @ChalidRaqami2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I already have plans for it. However, I will finish the Remarkable 2 and Onyx Boox comparisons first. But even without comparing them side by side, it basically comes down to: Do you need to have a built-in light or not? Because if that's not a must have for you, Supernote or Remarkable 2 are definitely better note taking devices. Otherwise Onyx Boox might be interesting as well, but they have some privacy concerns (see my Boox Note Air 2 review for more info).

I’m using my shiny new Kindle Scribe now. I was thinking of a Remarkable 2 before, but I decided against it. I’m glad I waited for the Scribe. So this is my first e-ink writing tablet. I’ve got questions: 1) will the pen or the eraser scratch up the screen? 2) related to 1: Should I get a screen protector? Every device that I have has a screen protector, so I don’t know if this Kindle needs one, too. 3) How do I know when the nib needs changing? It was great of Amazon to include that little box of mind with the removal tool, but there’s nothing re: when to change the nib, just how to do it.
@ChalidRaqami2 жыл бұрын
1) Not in my experience - and I've applied more pressure than necessary a few times for testing everything properly. So I doubt it will scratch with normal use. 2) The screen isn't as scratch resistant as the hardened display on the Kindle Oasis. Seems to be on par with the Kindle Paperwhite though. I would recommend getting a flip cover and not using a screen protector. Because a screen protector will worsen readability slightly and more importantly it will most likely worsen the tactile feel of the pen on the screen. I have had MANY e-ink devices over the years and only managed to scratch one of those while not being especially careful in handling them. 3) The nib wears out over time, depending on how often you use the pen. You should either replace it when it becomes too short to write comfortably or when it is worn on only one side (and got sharp).
@edwardferry82472 жыл бұрын
Why does the screen keep flashing black each time you do something on the screen? Surely that’s going to create headaches etc?
@ChalidRaqami2 жыл бұрын
This is because of the way e-ink technology works: The ink particles are aligned with an electrical charge. This requires energy at the moment it happens. Afterwards, the particles remain in place without drawing any power. To reset them and prevent artifacts (which is called ghosting), all particles in the screen need to be realigned. That's what this flickering is. You quickly get used to it and I personally never had any issues with it. With normal page turns in a book, it rarely happens, because there is usually no complete refresh. Only when ghosting becomes too noticeable, the screen flickers inside a book. Besides that, the flickering typically happens when UI elements are shown and hidden, because those usually are high contrast with straight lines and ghosting becomes noticeable faster than in a text-only ebook.

Very good review; it seems that the expectations about features and functionalities were basically the only thing that is sub par, compared to competitors. Nobody was expecting Amazon to ship a super loaded device, but what is available at launch is really minimal, and I find hard to justify the purchase at that price point. Maybe new features will be added as they expand the platform; but historically Amazon has a track record of abandoning things (remember the fire phone?) if they do not get immediate success; so if the sales won't be that great, most likely this will be the only product in this category that they will sell, and as such no further updates to the OS will be made.
@ChalidRaqami2 жыл бұрын
I like what they did with the Scribe and really hope they will expand the features and follow up with other models. There's great potential here and Amazon listing this model not as a 12th gen Kindle but as a 1st gen Kindle Scribe gives me hope that they have more plans for the future.
@fcf82692 жыл бұрын
@@ChalidRaqami TBH I am not sure I get what was their aim. As kindle reader doesn't do more than a kindle; as note taking device doesn't do more than other note taking devices (let's take the Kobo as direct competitor, instead of the Supernote or the Remarkable 2 or the Boox devices); so it is a pretty average device that does not really offer anything you can't get on other devices, and at a price point that is almost like the other devices. If they add more unique features you won't see on other competitors then yes, I think there is potential. But as is now, I just imagine this being a move to see if people already in the Amazon ecosystem are truly loyal to the brand, and will buy a device that does not offer much more than others (actually offer less in terms of features/price ratio). I was expecting to be blown away by improved features from the Boox, Supernote and Remarkable 2 on the Scribe, but instead it is a very forgettable piece of hardware, at least today.
@ArturZygmunt2 жыл бұрын
@@fcf8269 you do realize, that they can ship new software features whenever they want?
@fcf82692 жыл бұрын
@@ArturZygmunt I do, and do you realize, based on historical data, that most companies once they have your money have limited interest in adding features fast? In some cases what you get is the bare minimum implementation, just to mark a checkbox. Maybe you are not accustomed to how software development works; updates are for people that pay for subscriptions; when you buy a product as one time payment, you won't bring more money in the cash register anymore until next device. Small companies like Boox sell new devices every year, and people buy them... While Supernote and Remarkable 2 are still updating their devices after years, but most features are not really changing the device much. Amazon just wanted a device out there on the market for the holidays; if it goes bad they scrape it like they did with other failed devices.

There's no lasso tool sadly and no other option to move notes on the screen at the moment. Also there's no option to boot it up for the first time without an account. At least I haven't found one. You can't skip the Wi-Fi connection anymore. What you can do is log out of your account, after which you can navigate the user interface. But you don't have a proper homescreen (only a login prompt) and you can't create notebooks. You can open ebooks in the library, but every time you open the library, you get another pop up to log in. So being able to "use" it after logging out seems like a bug to me.

@@ChalidRaqami Interesting. I've a feeling Amazon will add that and more tools in firmware updates, sort of like with Kobo Elipsa which too didn't have certain features available at launch and thus not on the press review samples. The account being required is interesting, as I've seen stories in comments in various posts on the Kindle community on Reddit (and the MobileRead forums too) about some people using Kindle e-readers logged out, in fact, that's something even done within my own family, even as far as a primary school (SG) library where they apparently loan out Kindle e-readers to students, if my memory serves me correctly. (I had trouble remembering what I wanted to write after this point as an indirect result of a bug in the KZbin mobile app, so I apologise if I missed any points) As far as I know, Amazon sells their hardware at a loss to them recoup profits through digital content sales and subscriptions, that includes with Kindle e-readers, because if I recall correctly, Amazon are generally associated with discounts and value. I remember suggesting to users on Reddit asking which e-reader to buy that they should get a Kobo e-reader, and then some of them would tell me that they're expensive, but then I'd have to point out to them that they were fooled by Kindle e-reader pricing.

Great Review! I'm trying to find an ereader for my partner and I'm torn between the Scribe and one of the Onyx devices like the note air 2. Is there any Android app support on the scribe? She uses google keep for her note taking. I think she would primarily use it for reading, but she is also a high school teacher. Thanks!
@ChalidRaqami2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! No, there's no App functionality in there. Amazon is relying on their own operating system with all Kindle devices - the Scribe included. If it's a split between the Scribe and the Boox tablet, I'd make the decision based on how much you want to tinker with the device. The Boox Note Air 2 Plus has much more options, but it has a pretty steep learning curve, because it has so many functions. Also keep in mind, that with notetaking there's still the need to use the native app, because latency isn't as low in third-party Android apps. So using another app for note taking won't be great. The Scribe is clearly the more convenient option, but as you have seen in the video, note taking functions are a bit limited at the moment. So it really depends on what she needs to do. Not sure if that helped :D

Hi - 1) yes, that's unfortunately not possible in notebooks. Only handwritten notes. In Kindle ebooks you can create sticky notes, where you can add notes with a QWERTY keyboard, but those are "hidden" behind a popup and not directly visible on the page. I suspect that feature will come to the notebooks as well, because the manual mentions it. But it's not available in notebooks at the moment. 2) Here's a list for the supported book languages: kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G200673300 The user interface can be changed to English (UK/US), Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian and Chinese. As far as I know Amazon isn't mentioning which character sets are supported for ebooks, but it looks like it's UTF-8 only. 3) In addition to that, there are more languages available for the QWERTY-keyboard (Afrikaans, Arabic, Danish ... and a few more - are you looking for one specifically?). But as I mentioned, notetaking in that case only works with the sticky notes in ebooks and not in notebooks.

@@ChalidRaqami Thanks for clarifying. It looks like as a markable it won’t do what I want it to do (handwritten Devanagari into Mangal font), so now that the old Whisper isn’t being supported anymore, as I understand it, I’ll have to consider just a new Kindle e reader.

Thanks for the review! Off topic: what is the lcars image in the back - a poster?
@ChalidRaqami2 жыл бұрын
It is a plexiglas print from "lcars studio" of the Voyager. I put it in a picture frame with a LED strip on the inside of the frame. Initially I wanted to put the LED strip in lanes on the backplate of the frame to make it more uniform, but that would have been so much more expensive.

This was most comprehensive review I've watched so far! I think, from watching another review, the ghosting when erasing is there on purpose? Maybe to emulate a real pencil eraser? I'm assuming you can't connect a bluetooth keyboard like previous eink kindles, but do you think they'll ever create a Scribe compatible keyboard? I'd love to use it for typing then the handwriting functionality for editing the text.
@ChalidRaqami2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're right, there's actually two types of ghosting - I didn't explain that very well and the KZbin compression isn't helping with the shot I made :D When erasing lines, they will change to a ghosting-like effect as being removed, up until you let go of the screen. Then they will be actually removed. I think with that they are trying to emulate the pencil eraser. But that's when you get the ghosting I was talking about. So the lines are still barely visible on the page after letting go of the eraser function. Only when completely refreshing the screen (on page turn for example) they disappear. I wanted to show it, but the YT compression pretty much removed what I wanted to show. Unfortunately there's no option to pair a Bluetooth keyboard. Bluetooth is limited to audio functions right now. The Scribe's cover would be perfect for physical keyboard input because of the built-in stand function. But I suspect Amazon will expand on other features first and I wouldn't recommend waiting for it to be honest.
@maryl70672 жыл бұрын
@@ChalidRaqami Thank you for answering! I think I get what you're saying about the ghosting. You're right. They have quite a few things to perfect before they implement any keyboard capabilities. It would be the ultimate tool for writers with a keyboard, though. Maybe someday...

Great review. I was wondering if there is any possibility of using onenote for note taking on this device, and if yes then how is the performance.
@ChalidRaqami2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! No, unfortunately no Onenote support at the moment. But Amazon announced there will be a Microsoft Word integration in early 2023. Specifics are missing, but maybe Onenote will be part of it.

@@ChalidRaqami what about Boox ultra Chalid. Any idea of how it performs with onenote. I am a big onenote user so desperately looking for a tablet that comes with that functionality (with decent enough performance). Not sure if I should wait for scribe to have onenote support or go with Boox ultra (if it has that support)
@ChalidRaqami2 жыл бұрын
The Onenote Android app works well on the Boox Tab Ultra - it's just not optimized for the grayscale E-Ink screen. But there's low latency for pen input, even in HD mode, so that's a big plus. I'll to a full review of the Boox Tab Ultra shortly. There are a few things to be aware of, because while it's a great E-Ink tablet, it's also quite specialized (resulting in a pretty heavy, somewhat clunky and expensive device).

Can i underline text in some way in a epub file?
@ChalidRaqami2 жыл бұрын
Epub support is limited by having to use the Send-To-Kindle function. Copying an epub file via USB won't work - it won't show up in the library. Send-To-Kindle simply converts the epub file to the kfx format and makes it available to sync on the Kindle. You have the same options as with other Kindle ebooks this way (sticky notes and regular word-by-word highlighting).

It does not have a light sensor, relies on schedule set.
@ChalidRaqami2 жыл бұрын
It does have a sensor for the brightness, only color temperature depends on a schedule. Surprisingly, though, I can't spot the sensor - it doesn't seem to be sitting under a semi-transparent part in the bezel this time (like on the Paperwhite and Oasis), but is hidden some other way. I suspect it sits along the light carrier film where the LEDs are located, or maybe in a the small gap between the aluminum frame and the screen or something like that.
@aarongeorge31692 жыл бұрын
@@ChalidRaqami It's not surprising you can't find the sensor, because as I had said, it doesn't exist. It is auto brightness, via schedule only. If you don't believe me, take it from Good Ereader kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJmwhn6Fp8ulfrM

@@aarongeorge3169 They are wrong ;-) I've tested it for the review with a flashlight, here's a video I just recorded: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKOwoHWBoMZmedU Amazon also lists the Scribe with having light sensors in the Kindle comparison table on the German website. Is the screen glass or plastic ?
@ChalidRaqami2 жыл бұрын
Glass - but there's some special coating on the screen, or it was etched to give this paperlike texture. Hard to tell. Doesn't seem to be a screen protector, like with some other manufacturers. It's not as scratch resistant as the screen of the Oasis, but more similar to the Paperwhite.

For simply writing (which I think is the goal for the Scribe) I think pressure sensitivity is overrated. And…I always worry about scratching the screen if pressing too hard.

I don't know why I started watching this actually. It looks nice, but I don't care how good it is...as a Canadian, I refuse to buy anything else by Amazon. Just got a Kobo Libra 2 and it is such a nice reading experience. I also have Onyx Nova Air, and it is a lot of fun to write on. Unless Kindle decides to enable book sharing and library support in Canada, I will not buy any of their devices.
