Fact check - Aegon had to be dragged from the High Sept screaming and wailing that he didn't want to be king. "I have no wish to rule. No taste for duty. I am not suited." He told them that in articulate words and they still made him the king. "He had 20 years to name me heir. Steadfastly he upheld Rhaenyra's claim. He could have named me heir but he never did." His son was the cost of it. He is grieving and every crime he will commit comes from the place of grief. Maybe if Otto and Alicent actually trained him to be a sensible king instead of speculating that he would be a puppet to their show. If they cared or showed a little of affection towards he wouldn't have done this. Aegon is not Joffrey like many people are comparing. He is not a coward. Joffrey would never dare to fire Tywin. When Otto turns to him "you wouldn't dare" like in an intimidating and aegon just goes like "I have dared and i find it stimulating". Yeah that's not a scared dog like Joffrey.
@ManforSomeMarkets10 күн бұрын
Agree that Aegon is not Joffrey. He’s certainly not a good man, but he clearly cares. He tried involving his son with the small council (probably too young) and tried to be nice about taxation. The love of the people is the love he never got, and I think it would be interesting if he is a “good” king by the end of the civil war. It would also complement some of final events of the war with some sweet irony.
@fayedunaway810 күн бұрын

@fayedunaway89 күн бұрын
@@wafflingmean4477 the biggest difference between them is Joffrey was groomed and coddled while Aegon was neglected and abused. Joffrey was a straight up psychopath for no reason while Aegon's childhood explains his emotional immaturity. Aegon is not a good person but not a psychopath. Aegon is very explosive and emotional and he loved his son. People compare him to Joffrey just for the sake of it but they are so far apart in personalities.

Otto started the war, as he crowned his grandson king, without having a voting with also Rhaenyra stating her claim, followed by a vote of some sort. Rhaenyra was made unaware the king had died, the crowning was done within a minute after announcement of the death of Vinerys. He was Hand of the King and very likely knew Viserys believed in the prohecy and likely understood what Alicent didnt: Viserys was talking about the prohecy of Aegon I not the ruling of Aegon 2. The Hand must have known this, yet decided to quickly crown his grandson, so he could remain Hand. Viserys just before his death even had a big dinner (he was in pain without the medicines) to unite the family and make peace and restate that his heir to be Rhae, all to make sure there would not be a fight after his death and to make sure Hightower would not make his grandson King behind his back. The Targaryen mindset is usually 'overwhelming force will work just fine.' But it doesn't. Kings who go too hard with the 'fire and blood' lunacy tend to die young. From Aegon the Conqueror to both Maegor the Cruel and Baelor the Blessed trying to force the Seven Kingdoms into being, to later rulers like Daeron I who got eaten by Dorne, and Aerys, Rhaegar, Viserys the kid - even Daenarys. Only Targaryens who ever ruled well were ones who were so content in life their Council could prevent big problems. Like Viserys I and Eggon.

This scene is the peak of Otto's hypocrisy. He scolds Aegon for sending a kingsguard to kill Rhaenyra to avenge his son when he wanted to do it from the beggining before any provication. Then he scolds Aegon for hanging the ratcatchers when he himself hanged plenty of lords who also have grieving families but these also have armies at their command. The diference is that Aegon actually hanged suspects for the murder of his son. He made Aegon king against his will and now scolds him when he wields his power like a king. This is all just because he wanted a king he could control like Viserys was, but Aegon actually took his role as king seriously and wields his power regularly and that pisses off Otto.
@TheKeyser949 күн бұрын
One thing is deal with power with caution and sober, other is deal with power, as that wont affect you in the end, because sooner or later there would be consequences for your action, something that Aegon II not understand, there small-folk could turn against him and the other nobles families that armies on their own can turn on him, but he would be lucky, he would live just enough to see the end of the war, but his reign would be pretty short.
@masterplokoon88039 күн бұрын
@@TheKeyser94 Otto literally did all the things that Aegon did. The only diference is that Otto did them without provocation. While Aegon did them to people who were suspects for his son's murder. It's pretty clear that Otto's frustration is not with Aegon's morality but because of the fact that unlike Viserys, Aegon is a king that doesn't allow himself to be controlled by Otto. Otto wanted Aegon to be king so that he could govern with little royal interference like he did under Viserys. But to Otto's suprise, Aegon actually took his role as king seriously and doesn't let Otto control him which is why Otto is whining here.

@@masterplokoon8803 That if you ignore the manipulations of Larrys Strong, that whisper to Aegon ear that he should change of Hand, so Aegon is not independent enough, he is still a puppet, easy to manipulate, but also a wild card, only caring about his own whims or emotions at the time.
@masterplokoon88038 күн бұрын
@@TheKeyser94 while Larys did hint about that it's pretty clear that Aegon did not base his decision on him. You can see in Aegon's face that he clearly saw through Larys' false flattery. Plus what he said is actually completely true in this case. Otto clearly wants his king to be a puppet controlled by him rather than his superior and that would always create tensions with Aegon. Larys already saw the direction in which things were going and put himself in the best position to potentially influence Aegon in the future and told Aegon what he was already thinking. This idea that Aegon removed Otto as hand because Larys played him is not true. Plus Otto actually deserved to be fired, he has been a shameless hypocrite that clearly sees his king as a tool to rule through and not his actual boss which is just unaceptable. The only problem with this action is his replacement. In the books Criston is a capable commander but in the show he is a buffoon so that part was a mistake.
