The Queen was on horseback for Trooping the Colour from 1952 until 1986. From 1987 until her death, she rode in a carriage. In other words, the Queen used a carriage for more than half of her 70 year reign. So what tradition has been broken?

People are already used to seeing the Sovereign in a carriage for the Trooping of the Colors. However, I remember that when Queen Elizabeth II was young she rode a horse. I do not know when she switched from riding to being in a carriage. When Charles was younger, like his mother, father, and his siblings, Anne and Andrew; he was a good horseman.

She continued to ride up until two months before her death which coincided with her summer holiday in Balmoral, according to Terry Pendley her groom.
