The Guitar technique on the Sailors Tale solo comes from playing Banjo. It was one of the first instruments he learned to play)

just discovered this channel and this was an amazing reaction! Islands is definitely one of my favorite albums of theirs it's kinda unfortunate it's not very talked about compared to the rest of their discography. would absolutely love if y'all reacted to more king crimson especially their 80s stuff, definitely some of their strongest and weirdest work imo

Note for the guys - Formentera is, a place in the Balearics I think it may be in Ibiza. And the tuning-up was obviously prior to the recording of Prelude. (In case you don't know, Prelude is a development of one of the sections on Giles Giles & Fripp's untitled Suite). The biography of Fripp (by Eric Tamm) quotes him dismissing all the lyrics on the album (and thus agreeing with the critics) ^except^ Ladies Of The Road, because "that was real!" The guest musicians on this album are noteworthy - besides the return visits from Tippett, Charig and Miller, there's also Harry Miller (of Bluenotes/Brotherhood Of Breath fame) and the soprano singer Paulina Lucas who was apparently a newcomer to improvisation. (Imagine if Joelle Leandre had been available for Formentera Lady).

Would love to hear y'all listen to Discipline if you haven't. More prog would also be cool!

In case you didn't know, the track "The Letters" take roots in the previous band Fripp was in, Giles, Giles and Fripp. The song "Why don't you just drop in" is what gave the melody to the lyrics. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqKXpJ6KpJypic0&ab_channel=sbritt

Comment 2 - This version of the band was arguably as doomed as the Haskell line-up. No sooner had he taken on the task of teaching Boz to play bass, then he got a call from John Wetton looking for work! And by the time they started work on the album, if not even earlier, Fripp was already amassing bits of music unsuitable for this band, which were ultimately destined for the Larks Tongues era. So, sometime after the album was finished, but before he in-effect fired Sinfield and then famously antagonized Collins in the rehearsal room, Fripp invited Wetton (who was then in the studio with Family) to join King Crimson but he refused, knowing Fripp was just looking for a musical ally in his power struggle with the three jazz/R&B guys. I have the feeling that at some point in that subsequent US tour that they were coerced into, Fripp just ceded leadership of the band. It shows in those well-known funky jams, but even more so in the un-Frippian fusion-jazz tone of the last night's Groon (btw: if Collins demolished a mellotron onstage that night, I reckon it must have been then), and most of all in the 40-minute Master Plan/Oh Lord medley from the Summit sessions, where, with Fripp mostly silent, we glimpse an alternative future for the musicians, a road not travelled.

The lyrics to "Ladies of the Road" make me cringe so hard it almost sinks the whole album for me, but I do really like the opening "Formentera Lady"/"Sailor's Tale" double feature. For another experimental, sax-heavy, nautical-themed 1971 prog classic, you might try tackling Van Der Graaf Generator's Pawn Hearts. Despite all the points of commonality (including a guitar cameo by Robert Fripp) it's a very different album.
