There is only one King Diamond, and for more than thirty years the great Dane has been dropping classic albums and putting on shows fans remember for the rest of their lives. Perhaps the only downside to having such a formidable catalogue is that there are just too many great songs to fit into a single set. However, you would be hard-pressed to find a fan who wouldn't want to hear 1987's seminal Abigail in its entirety, and Songs For The Dead Live captures this, twice, and in very different locales. Boasting eighteen songs per set, each of the two shows - Belgium's Graspop Metal Meeting in June 2016 and Philadelphia's Fillmore in November 2015 - feature a brace of classic King Diamond and Mercyful Fate tracks including "Welcome Home," "Halloween," and "Eye Of The Witch" before launching into Abigail. The performances of the all-star lineup of musicians, comprising of guitarists Andy LaRocque and Mike Wead, bassist Pontus Egberg and drummer Matt Thompson, are absolutely ferocious, hammering home every single moment.
Captured on film by director Denise Korycki for Wild Wind Studios, she worked closely with King on every aspect of filming, and throughout the viewer finds themselves front and center as the shows unfold. This includes some inventive camera placement, such as riding in on the back of the wheelchair as it is wheeled out to "Out From The Asylum" at the start of the show, or looking up from the coffin at the commencement of Abigail opener "Funeral", which adds an extra dimension to proceedings. Naturally, the theatricality that has become synonymous with King Diamond is there in full force, making for an even more immersive experience. The gothic stage set and the participation of actors playing out certain scenes tying into the songs definitely increases the drama and the sense of complete disconnect from the trappings of reality, ensuring that the shows remain riveting from start to finish.
While the setlists are virtually identical, the drastic difference in the two venues make for distinctly different atmospheres. The sweeping, epic scale of Graspop and the virtual sea of baying metalheads makes for a particularly thrilling spectacle, King holding them all in the palm of his hand. The Fillmore show is immediately more intimate, and rather than a mixed bag of metal lovers drunk on a weekend of the heavy stuff, the audience is comprised entirely of the King Diamond devout, screaming back every word, their love for their hero bleeding from every frame. Songs For The Dead Live gives those who missed out on seeing these shows in the flesh a chance to vividly experience them, offering so much deeper an experience than your run of the mill live DVD.

@@Lunatic4Bizcas Yep! I've been a death metal/black metal/ with influences of classical music and horror movie soundtrack guitarist for 33 years, played in several bands and toured, and I used to get a lot of goth ( real, old school goth like Christian Death ) chicks that hated metal and punk rock but liked the whole ghost story/horror thing of King Diamond and liked the albums. My ex-wife hated my incessant playing of King and Mercyful Fate in my truck as we rode to meet the dope man. Our relationship lasted 14 years, but even tho she cheated on me and did me wrong I loved her. I'm better without a girl that hates King Diamond \m/ \m/

I've seen Metallicas soldout megashows, i saw Nirvana at Roskilde 1992 with an audience of 110000 people and i've seen AC/DC's soldout megashows. But 1990 in Copenhagen Denmark, at a theater called SAGA, i saw King Diamond for the very first time and i can say this - that is the biggest kick i've had within music, and it was as becoming in some kind of trance and i will remember that night for the rest of my life, by far the best concert i've ever seen.

Quotes from famous musician and High ranking Church of Satan member and very close friend to Anton LaVey - King Diamond "Satanism is about the Powers of the Unknown. I have had hundreds of strange supernatural experiences with the occult, the other side, the beyond, whatever you want to call it that proves there is a spiritual world that can cross over into our world. Satanism is a life philosophy so within it you can have your own religion, any religion you want. Or take from various religions or your own whatever makes you happy. I have my own beliefs and Religiously Satan on a spiritual level stands for the Powers of Darkness, the Powers of the Unknown which are always all around us at all times. This is the best way to talk about these Spirits and Powers. Not a god or a devil as both of them are christian god's and that has nothing to do with Satanism. Of course there are different types of satanism. And I never wear gold as that is not healthy for you! Must need something bad and use that during ritual then you might be able to get help from these powers I believe are all around us. But that is only if they like you. I do not believe in the two christians beings god or the Devil, I believe in the Powers of the Unknown, Powers of Darkness, The Powers of the Occult what ever name you want to use. . I have done Satanic Rituals and have seen and heard spirits. Some people like to call "Them" God or the Devil or whatever, but I do not believe there is all one good and one all bad power. I believe there are many, many different Spirits and Powers that exist and that they are not good or evil, like humans they have both inside of them and I always treat them with the highest amount of respect and feel that respect returned by Them. It is massive mutual respect. Not Power, but Powers, Big difference. I believe we are one and the same me and these Unknown Forces. You really have to respect them for the incredible power they have. I believe they come to those who they feel can handle it and who will be faithful believers." In the song "Welcome Princess of Hell" you hear me singing to these spirits and powers and they sing back to me. They came to me to let me know they are here for me on my journey and that they are behind me and that they wish me good luck so I see them as my protectors almost like guardian angels. We all live several lives so that our powers/souls can grow in order to reach a higher plane and join with something greater. Our powers live in a human shell several times that will enable us to go on to a new life form a higher plane of being or join one day with a larger greater force. But 99 percent of the population live by the Satanic Philosophy whether they know it or not. As Anton LaVey even told me that Satanism is simply a life philosophy and NOT a religion. Satanism is based on logic and things that are proven which is why it could never be a religion as religion is based on things that cannot be proven. And that’s why I say that these powers of darkness are always welcome in my home. It’s as if the powers of the unknown came and said ‘Hey, we will stay with you and help you.’ That’s what I feel.” When I almost died during surgery I saw my body below as a demon tried to enter my soul and I had to fight him! These things are very real! Personally I do not use electrical lighting at home and on my Satanic Altar or in the studio when I record vocals, only black candles as electrical lighting drives away the spirits and I love having them near me. People who see Satanism from the Christian view point are not treating these powers with respect and that is very dangerous. I once actually summoned a spirit in order to prove they are real to a girl who doubted and Satan came. My wife will not look in our mirror in fear something will come out. In Satanism you are your own God. LaVey felt and I agree that we are all individuals born with different needs and views and so he felt everyone should make up their own mind about what to believe in spiritually if anything at all which is why he left a huge void in the Satanic Bible when it came to spirituality or any kind of religious beliefs and so within the Satanic Philosophy a person can still be a Christian if that fulfills their spiritual needs. Satan also means the Opposite, Inverted, Reversed which is why we wear the Satanic crosses and pentagrams. Satan means the opposite of religion. Satanism is living out your feelings and instincts without feeling it is a sin, enjoy yourself while you are here now while you can and have your own individual beliefs. One thing I consider almost mandatory though is believing there are powers around us. And you can use these powers to help yourself or those you care about. Or throw these powers at people in a negative way. I am not religious at all but you can say I am spiritual due to my experiences and beliefs. The Satanic bible is not really a bible because a bible is for religion so it should be called a book of philosophy instead. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. When people see the word ‘Satan’ they see only negative. Satan is not only bad, to me. It represents both sides of everything. I don’t believe in the Christian devil. “Christianity has both God and the devil. I believe there is neither of these two. I believe in the powers of the unknown, which I have experienced many times. I know that rituals work. I don’t do them often because you can easily misuse them. They will get back at you if you don’t respect them. Rituals can channel the forces that surround us all the time but I respect the powers and will not abuse them in any way. The Satanic Bible is 70 percent Philosophy and 30 percent magic. Satan is the power of the universe. Satan to me is the Powers of Darkness, not a man with horns. Some people think Satanism is what the Christian church portrays it to be. If you are as bad and as evil as you can be and you think that’s Satanism then you have become part of the Christian religion. That is Christian Satanism which is not what I am about at all. I know these powers are good because they saved my life many times!

Why did it take so long for the algorithms to bring this masterpiece to me. Brought back the memories of hearing this album play in the attic of a high school friend (which was his dad's band room, full of guitars and amps and drum set) I was hooked, at age 14, and knew I'd play guitar for the rest of my life, and still do, as do my 3 son's, and daughter too! All have heard and been inspired by the birth (in my mind) of heavy metal, the way it should be. Often imitated (for good reason) but never mastered, except for the King.

How awesome is the crowd? Seriously the energy from the audience is INSANE. I can't wait to see King live. I've watched this easily a 100 times. It's one of the best live performances of any type that I have ever seen. Everything sounds BETTER than the studio versions. The mixing is great, the video is stellar, everything is just right. Hail the King!

Took my daughter to this concert. It was her first concert. She was 6 years old at the time. We were chatting with some other people at the show and they were there to see Matt. Philly show is always a homecoming of sorts. They were heading to the lobby to chat with Matt for a few minutes and invited us along. I know his time was limited and I didn't want to interrupt. But he was awesome enough to take a moment to say hello to my daughter and chat briefly. That's one hell of a memory. And to have this concert forever available for all of us to look back on is priceless.

Matt Thompson is an underappreciated drummer. Love watching drum cam video of him playing. I realize Mikkey Dee created the best of the KD catalog, but Matt is still an amazingly talented drummer. I've commented repeatedly about Matt. But he took a moment to meet with us before this show in the lobby. Took a moment to speak with my 6 year old daughter. I'm forever grateful and appreciative of how generous he was with his time.

Omg... Speechless... lost for words after watching this. I've seen KD twice (1990 & 2005... missed the House of God tour) and he still has it: performance, stage presence, showmanship.... it also extends to the band. Serious serious musicianship here. No words for Andy; everything has been said before. Having quit smoking is the best that happened to King's voice. Speaking of voices: surprinsingly very very good work on the backing vocals of Livia, matching his husband high pitch and also harmonizing. Nothing else... let's watch it again cranked to the max !

Just watched this again. Still one of the best metal concerts ever captured on film. Every musician gets his share in the spotlight, I just love everything in this. And The King himself, 30 years after Abigail was released, just amazing. I was in Espoo to witness this, I´m glad they made the video, thought after the show that hopefully they do, so fantastic it was. As I can memorize every note, word etc. in Abigail album, this was almost perfect, there are maybe two or three times towards the end of the show, where King can´t quite reach original heights, but only few. Guitarwork is almost 100% as it should be, incredible. Bass, hat´s off ! And Mat´s drumsound is fat and juicy. Until next time !
