Here after watching The King's Speech. He had stammer and is frightened to speak infront of many people, let alone be the King but had no choice when his eldest brother took the easy way out and abdicated. He was a strong and resposible man. Didn't have the best childhood but raised his own children the best way and became a good father and King.

I m not british, but I ve learnt a lot about european dinasties. To be honest, for me,Bertie was a real blessing. Im romanian, and we have a king,Carol II,the cousin of Eduard VIII,who also left the throne for a woman, almost identical as W.Simpson.In real history books,i ve read that both cousins ( your Eduard and out Carol II),suffered from priapism . That s why,both of them were insclaved by two women who had some sexual skils.And Bertie was a stutterer, like out king Michael of Romania, who was his nephew. And they look alike. Same dinastic family, same problems. I really admire George VI,aș I admire out Michael I. They were both very strong characters, despite their stummering,very inteligent and so loving aș husbands and fathers.

@pattimessenger6214
@pattimessenger6214 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe unbelievable because he was born on the anniversary of Prince Albert’s death. The family was concerned about how Queen Victoria would feel toward the baby boy. They named him Albert, after his great grandfather. This is from Wikipedia: “Uncertain of how the Prince Consort's widow, Queen Victoria, would take the news of the birth, the Prince of Wales wrote to the Duke of York that the Queen had been "rather distressed". Two days later, he wrote again: "I really think it would gratify her if you yourself proposed the name Albert to her."[4] The Queen was mollified by the proposal to name the new baby Albert, and wrote to the Duchess of York: "I am all impatience to see the new one, born on such a sad day but rather more dear to me, especially as he will be called by that dear name which is a byword for all that is great and good”

@@sabrinadupont2017 He was a much loved member of the family. He had epilepsy, and most likely because of the frequent seizures, had developmental problems. He lived in the country close to his grandmother, Queen Alexandra. She had a garden bed made for him which he enjoyed planting flowers in every time he came. He had friends he played with. He had the mind of a small child, even as he grew older. He was not able to function well or understand what was going on much at official occasions. In the country, he was able to have fun with his pets and friends and didn't have to go to official events. His last day was happy, spent going for a long walk with his big sister Mary. He was buried close to where he lived much of his life, very close to his late uncle, by the way. Do you criticize that Prince Alexander John, George V's baby brother, was buried in the Sandringham cemetery too? Or is that okay?

He could be in the palace with them but not in public representation or responsabilité but It's not a reason to hiding him. He could have friends but a child needs to be with his parents, brothers and sister... Even if they visited him, it's not the same thing, only visits. Also, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was the first English born Consort since Catherine Parr, last wife of Henry VIII, who died in 1545. After that all Consorts were foreign born, though James II first wife, and mother of the two future Queens, Mary II and Anne was English, but she died 14 years before he took the Crown. Edward Vll was terrified of his mother Queen Victoria, I cant say I totally blame him for how he treated his sons at least as far as the "ecxcuse" for his trauma goes ,she was very tough and sadly the cycle continued with hs sonGeorge the V and his sons until finally George the Vl broke the circle of using fear to raise your kids,good for him at that specific aspect of not using fear to raise a child (coldness is another issue), and it thankfully carried on with Queen Elizabeth ll and her son Prince Charles lll and him with his son William the V and him with his son George Vll and hopefully it will continue like that.

If Queen Elzabeth the II was raised by such loving, involved parents, why was she a distant, disinterested parent. Her father was King and still an active father. She had Charles and Anne before she was queen and was distant and cold.

Ugh she was crowned QUEEN at 25 years old. 25!!!! Her kids were barely toddlers! I cant imagine being crowned queen at 25, after loosing your father so soon!!! Also, it wasnt until she was around 12 that her father was considered for the throne. Before she turned 12, King George was still just considered the "spare". It wasnt until her uncle abdicated that when she was age 12 her father became King. He was 41 years old when he took the throne. 41 years old with a 12 year old. Vs. a 25 year old with toddlers! In contrast her own children Anne and Charles were 5 and 3 at the time when she became Queen. She had less time with them when they were younger, unlike her father who raised her until she was 12 when he all of a sudden became King at 41, whereas she became Queen at 25.

They have given this country more than any other royal has ever given this country I am proud to call them my queen and prince Philip, I always wondered why he wasn't given the title as king because that is how I see him. The descriptions in the beginning are contradicted by the historical record. George V had a strong sense of duty that he tried to pass to his sons but was no more "cruel" or distant than the average upper class British father of the times. He was also known to be enraptured with his grandchildren, particularly Elizabeth and Margaret.

Not sure about this. George WAS a pretty terrible father. Fathers in that time were strict, but he could actually be cruel, there's a difference. He did have good qualities though, to be sure. He was an exemplary monarch.
