John Barry makes even a big hairy monster sound beautiful. ❤

Starring Jeff Bridges, Charles Gordin and Jessica Lange “King Kong” (1976) is a remake of the all-time classic from 1933 and is set in the present time. Though not often talked about, this movie does go more into the sad conflict between creature and society, similar to the case Frankenstein’s monster. This can also be heard in the music by John Barry. We have a wonderful emotional score, not too much action or “primitiveness” is going on (with exceptions of the chants of the natives on the island). Even musically we can hear that it all isn't about a monster that goes wild among society but rather it is about a monstrous society that goes against the unknown… Enjoy!

Agreed... Take a listen to "Zulu" if you haven't already-- It's probably his best work from among his earlier efforts-- Ditto for "Goldfinger"...

Thanks Fred. I was nine when this picture came out and watched it twice on opening night at my father's wonderful movie theatre. The movie didn't thrill me much, but I loved Barry's score right away, a fan of his with his scores for Born Free, the Bond films, and so forth. Nothing puts my memory so firmly in the seat of that old theatre as hearing the music from the ones I watched there.

Now I know it's gonna be a wonderful weekend when Fred highlights my favorite film composer. John Barry was always a master of the epic but with a soulful heart score. King Kong is an example of Barry's continuing evolution. Thanks for sharing Fred and have an excellent weekend!!

Extremely satisfying John Barry score. I appreciate the WTC setting as I worked in 1WTC for 6 years in the 1980s. I also remember there was a small amount of controversy involving Jessica Lange's 'wardrobe exposure', lol. Thanks for the upload, Fred.

All of the classic John Barry-style cues are here in this curious study of a very big boy from the wrong side of the tracks and his desperate love for his beautiful obsession. Trapped in a world that he doesn't comprehend he strikes out in the only way he can. So many people commenting they hear Bond. That's just the John Barry style. The best tracks IMHO are the "Waterfall" theme and the very suspenseful "Chase and Trap". I also love the use of organ in the score - especially when the horns come in as a counter melody. Great score and great suite. Thanks Fred!

I agree with you that there is, like with many film composers, a specific Barry musical style that does not necessarily sound like his "Mickey Mouse" (Barry's definition) Bond style. When you listen to a large amount of Barry's scores (I have over 70 in my collection), one can hear the distinction between the evoling Barry style and the evolution of his Bond scores.

This movie wasn't appreciated for messing with classic, but now it stands on its own as wonderful time capsule, 🌟 turns from young Lange & Bridges & rest of excellent ensemble, Twin Towers & of course Barry.

Thanks Fred for the new version of Kong❤👏🏻 Great John Barry❤👏🏻 I've seen the 1933 original and this remake many times. Bravi Jessica Lange, Jeff Bridges and Charles Grodin. Jessica Lange stunning beauty that no CG will ever be able to replicate! An odalisque in the grasp of her god, she becomes the sultana in the arms of her love slave.💖🔝 I also saw the sequel from ten years later, starring Linda Hamilton. The Italian excellences that contributed to the success of the film were the special effects by Carlo Rambaldi and produced by Dino De Laurentiis. While the makeup effects by Rick Baker. Research: For critics it is a useless and expensive remake. It won a non-competitive Oscar Special Achievement Award for Best Special Effects and was also nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Sound. Of the three main King Kong films, it is the only one to feature the World Trade Center instead of the Empire State Building. Golden Globe to Jessica Lange as best debut actress. For this film, Carlo Rambaldi won the Oscar Special Achievement Award, creating a 12-meter-tall remote-controlled puppet (animatron). The giant robot was, however, used in a few scenes: in most of the shots in which the gorilla is seen in its entirety, it is played by Rick Baker with a costume, an actor for whom masks were also created capable of expressing the most common King Kong emotions. Rambaldi also created a life-size mechanical arm and hind leg for King Kong to use for close-up shots with Jessica Lange. Veteran voice actor Peter Cullen created the giant gorilla's monstrous sounds. Cullen suffered serious injuries while straining his throat to produce such powerful and inhuman lyrics, resulting in him spitting blood in the recording booth. However, it was not included in the credits. The film was a good commercial success. With an estimated production cost of $24 million, the film earned approximately double that in theaters in the United States alone (over $7 million in its first weekend), for a total of $90 million worldwide. At the end, the film occupied the 7th position in the ranking of the highest US grosses of the 1976/1977 season and the 1st position in the Italian ones. Deleted scenes can be found on DVD. The girl claims to have escaped the tragedy by hiding on deck, as the famous pornographic film “Deep Throat” was being shown below deck, which later became the nickname of a mysterious informant in the recent Watergate scandal, fatal for the seat of the then president Richard Nixon . She ironically concludes, in a double allusion, that she was saved by “Deep Throat.” Among other things, Wilson alludes to the former head of state, recipient of a gift such as a painting by Picasso, in order to obtain favors for the company.

Hello, Fred! Italian producer Agostino " Dino " De Laurentiis ' idea was to humanize the figure of the giant ape ( which in the 1933 version was little more than a naturally exotic monster ). With the exception of the contractual requirements of the 007 films, at that time Barry was already beginning to compose in a solemn, melancholic way, leaving aside excitement to invest in introspective and emotional observation. Thus, everything came together in a satisfactory way, especially if we compare this score to Max Steiner 's experimental work in 33 ( orchestrated by Bernard Kaun ), in which the action and suspense themes were short, almost uninterrupted and impersonal. If we consider scientifically that yes!, the monkey is 98% human, Dino & Barry really got it right!! Thanks and bye!!

Fred, thanks for posting this! Even mediocrity needs analyzing. "A monstrous society that goes against the unknown." If only! Nothing wrong with remaking a classic movie, but If you're going to do it, you should at least improve upon it. Simply moving the setting into the present day is not enough (now more years removed from us than the original was from the remake). The supposedly more sensitive portrayal of Kong and slow pace was betrayed by marketing that focused on a powerful, buff Kong astride the twin WTC towers taking on the USAF. So audiences were misled and ushered into a slow, plodding story with a ridiculous finale that offered no twist or surprises. He falls, he's dead. In 1933, Kong could at least put up a fight. By the 1970s, with bi-planes replaced with supersonic jets, fuhgeddaboutit. Beyond that, the director and writers were not up to the task of delving into the themes of civilized vs primal, man vs beast, the sexual tension between Kong, our heroine and her beau, the greed of the oil company (oh, how 1970s!), exploitation of wilderness, etc. etc. There is little humor, no one seems to be having any fun, the whole enterprise stripped of the sense of adventure and the exotic that helps make the original so compelling. No one talks about this movie today: The 1933 Kong is superior in every way. As for the music: it's all rather generic JB, bringing to mind J Williams' Towering Inferno score. In fact, they are pretty much interchangeable. I mean, who would notice outside the ultra-niche movie soundtrack crowd? The lounge- kitsch segments ("Super Tanker") evoke Bond in an Alpine cabin pursuing detente with his female KGB counterpart. Barry was clearly not all that inspired with this effort, reaching for his usual harmonic and melodic tropes: rising 4ths and 5ths in the low brass, hanging high string tones, the tonic to flat sub-mediant progressions. It's all there...all been heard before, though fitting for a movie that is also less that its inspiration. Edit: typos.
