I bought my tractor specifically to use a tiller. We built in 1991 and did all the original landscaping and planted probably 25 trees. Over the years after disturbing the lay of the land and changing the rain run-off, it had made all sorts of ruts and other things. I wasn't buying a skid steer or paying a landscape company $20k to fix my problems. I bought a new 25 hp TYM with a loader and a Woods 60" gear drive tiller for $18k. I found high spots throughout the property and I made about 10 yards of dirt tilling those spots then filling lower areas and so on. It took about a week, but that and the things I have used the tractor for I figure I got a free tractor out of the deal. I don't lift anything by hand! lol 3 years and only about 70 hrs. Decomposed leaves may be worth more than gold! My dad always bagged the grass and between that, leaves, kitchen scraps and manure, he had the prettiest dirt in a garden I have ever seen. You won't get it like that for a few years, but it will be worth it and you will learn everything else along the way. I can't wait for you to get a new bigger tractor. and eliminate a step or two from the firewood game. I didn't even know I needed one till I got one! lol

A tiller is great for that. You made a very good choice to buy a machine and do the work yourself. I think people like us just know that. We also know the value of a dollar and I really want to do my best to keep my little tractor until I can pay cash for my "dream machine". It'll be exciting for all of us 🤠👍

You should look into planting cover crops over the winter. I plant them in mid September. I wish I learned more about them earlier in life. It prevents weeds from growing back and keeps the soil healthy. If you mow it down early spring and let it dry out you can till all that vegetation into the soil like compost too. If you do soil testing you can even pick plants that can help correct deficient nutrients in your garden. It doesn’t look like you would have erosion issues but it can help with that as well. Looking forward to seeing results in the spring 😊

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely look into that 🤠👍

I ran that same tiller behind my Kioti subcompact when I had it. It is a great tiller that is sized well for a subcompact tractor. You should have some nice soil to plant in next spring.
@samsdoinstuffАй бұрын
You are exactly right! That tiller is perfect for the subcompact tractors. I can't wait to get this garden going this year! 🤠👍

Hey Sam you got the right tool for the job. Great idea with the leaves. Last year we used cardboard to keep the weeds down and it works pretty good. Not sure if I can till them up until next year. 😂 That tiller is awesome Thanks for the video.
@samsdoinstuffАй бұрын
Hey Mitch! Now you make me wonder what it would do to old wet cardboard. Probably chew it into dust! Just stay out of cat tails with it. That was a huge mess!!! 🤠👍

When I saw that thing stop, I thought oh man....... really appeared uneventful. When I first got mine I had the slipper clutch set to a loose setting and the tiller would get loud and kinda jump, the roots and such were many, and I couldn't tell on the surface. Should I loosen mine up a bit more? Could you make a video on the slipper clutch and how you adjust yours and any maintenance or check ups prior to use that you do? Thanks Sam! Really appreciate your videos and work!

I'm glad you're finding my videos helpful! I will try to make a video on that, thanks for the suggestion! 🤠👍

Good job! Slip clutches are great!

Thank you! They sure are. If i had to replace a shear bolt every time I hit a rock, I'd go "broke", lol 🤠👍
@wildbill23cАй бұрын
As long as they're adjusted properly, otherwise they aren't LOL.

The garden look s good but where I live and my garden is on a slight hill to a higher hill and if I tilled my garden in the winter the top soil would be in the creek .As for rocks here in east Tn next to the mountain we make great rock farmers .
@samsdoinstuffАй бұрын
Thank you! That has to be a real challenge. I've got everything from 3-6" goobers to 1k lb+ boulders. I should sell them, lol 🤠👍

My job as a kid was to pickup rocks as my grandfather tilled the field. Next day there were more rocks. 😂
@samsdoinstuffАй бұрын
I know, right? It's crazy. Like they grow overnight or something. Great job for a kid, btw 🤠👍

Well maybe you should just grow a rock garden HAHA!!!!. When we had horses, when we cleaned out the horse stalls we'd dump the manure in the garden, leaves, grass, etc. All got dumped in the garden....had some really nice garden soil. Did that for years, and grandpa just used an old Troy Bilt Roto Tiller....now I've got the tractor with a roto-tiller, just makes the job quicker....my cousin has grandpa's old roto-tiller, it still runs, just needs a new set of tines. I need to adjust the slip clutch on my tiller, the tiller got a hold of a root and the clutch didn't slip it just stalled the tractor, not good. That fence around the garden would drive me nuts trying to till in there like that.
@samsdoinstuffАй бұрын
I used to till my parent's garden with a Troy built. That thing wanted to pull my arms off, lol. The fence is a little annoying but it keeps the critters and deer out... I think. That tiller is a beast. I really like it 🤠👍
@alexanderreid465Ай бұрын
Leaves are good but they add a lot of nitrogen to the soil and some crops don't like all that nitrogen and you have to compensate with a complete fertiliser, do a PH test on the soil before you plant,
@samsdoinstuffАй бұрын
@@alexanderreid465 Thank you! I know corn needs a lot. I've been chewing the ear of the farmer who works the fields surrounding us. My potatoes and cucumbers did very well last year, but my corn did not. I may need to fertilize in sections according to the crop. Thank you for the suggestion 🤠👍
@andrewk6844Ай бұрын
Its a Rotory hoe, not tiller. I grew up on a farm and never got off to remove rocks . can you think of stopping every time you get rocks on 20 plus acres
@samsdoinstuffАй бұрын
Huh, I've never heard it called that. Thanks for the info 🙏 Wow, that would get old fast! 🤠👍
@richardschaffling9882Ай бұрын
Sorry they are called Tillers
@trek458aАй бұрын
A rotary hoe is not the same as a tiller where I come from. That is a rotary tiller. A rotary hoe has disc like wheels with tines.
@samsdoinstuffАй бұрын
@trek458a I did look it up and from my inexperienced Google search it seems like tomato, tomahto. Still, learned something new so that's good 🤠👍
