When my dear father passed away, we derived great solace from being reminded of those who have passed away and are on heaven's shores. These words are still spoken today, and I recall my dear late mother also. We need to recall our dearly departed and those who need our charity and with whom we must look after as Christ would have us do; love God and our neighbour; all other commandments are centred on those two. I never miss 'Carol's from Kings'.

For two years in college, we did the Service of Lessons and Carols, and both years the chapel was SRO. It was fantastic. I still have the recording of my senior year, and I was able to sing my first and only solo during 4 years. I'll remember that service as one of the best that I ever did. Thank you so much for posting the entire service here. It brings back such fond memories to me. We did all of the Green and Red book descants and anthems, and Sir David Willcocks was the dean of all music that was good. Great!

Yes, it was a lot of work - mainly the every day rehearsals throughout the year rather than for the event itself, but Stephen Cleobury trained us well to take the music in front of us and make it happen!

I am soooo devastated to hear of the death of Stephen Cleobury. I have been an Anglophile for 25 years, ever since I heard Stephen's (and Sir David's) arrangements for the first time. I also wish I could have met both of them & played my favorite hymn (I Sing the Almighty Power of God, tune FOREST GREEN) on the organ for them. (I have been an organ geek since 1988). The reason I have never visited Cambridge is because I am afraid of flying (the few times I did fly, I suffered from severe barotrauma (ears popping from air pressure)). But for my barotrauma, I would have visited Cambridge a few times in the last 25 years. RIP Stephen, & I hope you & Sir David & RVW are singing *& playing on the organ) every hymn that fits with the tune FOREST GREEN. Thank you for all the beautiful Festivals of Lessons & Carols, Stephen!

The opening immediately reminds me of when I met my mother’s second cousin, Barbara Wood, in 2002, when she was 82 years old. She was very religious, and my own training was as an organist, so we quickly got around to discussing church music. In the course of the conversation, she said, "You know, I’m a Gauntlett, and I think some of my grandfather’s hymns are still in the hymnbook." She had NO IDEA that when Lessons and Carols is broadcast around the world from King’s College, Cambridge, it is her grandfather’s hymn that opens the service! (of course, I told her)

The real message of our faith is so much easier to absorbe without the commercial pressure of our Xmas celebrations, that focuses on us as consumers rather than a congregation humbled and overawed by God’s Mercy and faith in us.He allowed his Son to be sacrificed for our redemption. I really believe the voices and music they make is as close to Heaven as one can get...the whole experience is phenomenally moving...the apex of the scraping of history down the chapel nave...to meet with the present. Mesmerizing...ethereal beyond words.

This would have to be the best service and music I have heard across the 30 years that I've been part of an order of Service. It was 2 days before my first child was born, and the peace and gentleness of Once in Royal David's City was profoundly ushering in my new life as a new mum. So grateful to you Mr Dawson for the recording. It is part of our lives now in Advent. The opening words and prayers are timeless.🙏

Sharon Morton I wish there was an all-choral-music station on the radio. Even the public radio station plays too much instrumental music, and even then, not much Vaughan Williams or Handel. So I wish an all-choral-music station existed. (Cannot have my smartphone on all day, the bright light gives me a headache after two hours.) By the way my most favorite compositions are the hymn tunes Forest Green and Kingsfold.
