HOLY CRAP. WHERE HAS THIS GAME BEEN ALL MY LIFE? Y'all have sold me on trying out the Kings Field games. Soon as I finish Shadow Tower, that's next on my list. Thanks for the amazing stuff as always, Sin and Richie!

This actually kinda sold me on trying out Kingsfield. Please also have a gander at Shadow Tower. Which is Kingsfield's cool gothic cousin which Demon's Souls takes some ideas from.

Resist Missiles is a wind spell, that's how you survive the mine arts. Also, the elf ghost gives you the Dark Slayer, not the Moonlight Sword. Guyra guards the Moonlight Sword Edit: Kings Field II (US) has the best music of the KF series. If you were unimpressed by the music here, I highly recommend KF2. It's my favorite of the series

If there's any game Fromsoft needs to remake, that would have to be King's Field. While, technically Demon's Souls is a Spiritual Successor to King's Field I think it would be amazing to delve into King's Field with today's graphics. The lore is also interesting!

This is ridiculously weird. During 49:20 Richie starts talking about remaking King's Field in Godot. While I was listening to it, I was trying to remake King's Field in Godot. No joke. How weird is that? It's like the odds are impossible.

If you haven’t already, King’s Field 2 NA (or King’s Field 3 JP), is definitely worth playing if you want to see the follow up story from this game. You learn more about Seath (provides you find the secret ending) and the world as a whole. It’s a bigger game overall, but a little more linear so you won’t get so lost. It’s really good.
@Pacal_II4 жыл бұрын
The first King's Field actually didn't have an inter-connected world. It was more like Demon's Souls where you have seperate levels and you have to teleport to each one. It's only in the second game (King's Field in the west) that the whole world was open connected, besides the last level.

JSF's comparison of FromSoft level exploration to _really_ early games like _Wizardry_ (which, incidentally, the Japanese RPG community loves--there were several Japan-only entries in the franchise long after it had died in the West) is dead on point. The lack of fast travel in _Dark Souls_ (for example, the slog back up from Blighttown if you used the bonfire at the bottom) has never appealed to me, and the reason why is that I've paid my dues in that already, what with _Ultima III, IV,_ and _V,_ _Bard's Tale I-III, Phantasie I-III, Legacy of the Ancients, Legend of Blacksilver,_ and numerous other 1980s computer RPGs where you could explore all or nearly all of the world map from the start, you learned the hard way where the stuff that would obliterate your party was, and if you staggered out of a high-level dungeon, down to three HP and out of spells and you got jumped by a random encounter trying to hike back to the nearest town, well, you cursed your bad luck and loaded your saved game 'cause all your loot and progress for the last two hours was gone, tough luck. (Actually, _Dark Souls_ is really generous in that respect: at least you get to keep the loot you find and you have a shot at recovering your lost XP/cash (i.e. souls).)

No need to go that far, playing e.g. the original JP Final Fantasy or original Star Ocean already makes me feel like playing DS1 for the first time and not knowing what anything is. Though FF does a better job at gatekeeping difficult areas early on (and SO usually points out where you’re supposed to go)

I love this entire series (and Shadow Tower as well! I like ST more than KF2) It really does have a lot of shining moments of actual "good design" that people like to misunderstand or misinterpret (of course its pretty subjective but people HAVE trashed some games in this series, like Shadow Tower, in the past, even other KF fans). They are games that really invite you to explore for a loooong time. Like Metroid Prime but a lot older.

King's Field set a standard for me personally. I was so in love with King's Field's style and gameplay, that any time I found another RPG that used a first person view I would always get excited thinking I would be playing a modern King's Field type game. But I was usually always disappointed at least in some aspect. The vast open worlds of the Elder Scrolls games was so much less interesting to me than the caves and passages of King's Field. The combat of Elder Scrolls was so loose and wonky and I didn't get the same satisfaction as I got from learning how to fight each of the different enemies in King's Field. Exploration is so much more intricately designed in King's Field, making it feel more rewarding to me when you find the secrets they have hidden all over the game. There really just wasn't anything else like King's Field.

I think my fondness of kings field 1 and 2 (US) is a big reason why dark souls 2 is my favorite dark souls game. I played demons souls/ dark souls on release, but put off playing ds2 for a long time after it was released, because of reviews comparing it negatively to ds1. Eventually I got it once the price had dropped, and I was blown away by how much it reminded me of kings field. The aesthetics/tone/feel/design of ds2 make it like an updated version of kings field. I remember the massive wave of kings field nostalgia that hit me after going through doors of pharos and seeing the abandoned fountain right before the exit to the brightstone cove area (the one that looks like the hub/yellow/red/blue juice/big moon energy fountain from kings field (US).

Talking about the world not feeling like an amusement park, that's exactly what souls games feel like to me. All the enemies for the most part are standing in place, waiting for you to show up so they can perform for you. Yes, there is some lore justification for that, but souls levels almost always feel like a haunted house to me with employees just waiting for the customer to get close to spring into action
@JTisOneCrazyMan205 жыл бұрын
JMH was mostly console limitations at the time of Demons Souls and DS coming out. But yes there is lore reason, all the hollows are well, hollow. They lost their mind and just stand their like catatonic until they see something to attack mindlessly. There are enemies that do move in the game. Bloodborne did improve on this a bit by having mobs that walk around a perimeter like they are searching the streets/area for beasts

The first 3 times I played dark souls I ended up in the catacombs to be faced by a fogwall I couldnt pass and was like pfffff i gotta go all the way back now? Fuck this....put the game away for half a year....returned to it, started over of course and promptly did the exact same as the previous time without noticing xD and I did that one more time before it finaly stuck that that was not the way to go at first. The thing is I never assumed there would a "too hard way" because all everyone was talking about was how ridiculously dificult these games were so I assumed that was just how hard dark souls would be xD

@@JTisOneCrazyMan20 yeah, I mean, there's a reason some older games are regarded as masterpieces. I don't understand why graphics and the like should be prioritized above all else. If a game a good, it haven't dated graphics shouldn't be a reason to not play it.
