You must be a snagger I mean flosser... don't be mad we float guys catch 98% of the fish because we get them to bite and can keep fishing the same hole instead of hooking a fish in the back and spook the rest. Not to mention how many flossers just take the illegally hooked fish and think it's fine. Their not sportsman.
@collinbroschay3874 Жыл бұрын
Don’t wanna spread hate in this awesome channel, but like fray said, these are undeniable bites. They grab these eggs, you can argue it’s out of aggression or biological instinct to eliminate competition, but they eat and there’s nothing else to it. Good luck 👍🏻
@kollmesser95373 ай бұрын
@@josephgarcia1575let’s be honest here bud they go to spawn and die and i’m not saying that keeping snagged fish is right and i don’t keep the fish unless it’s hooked in the mouth. but to say they “eat” is wild because even tho the hook is in the mouth and the fish bites the bait doesn’t mean it’s in a feeding manner it’s more of a bite out of aggression that’s why you have to fish a hole so long to actually get a bite you gotta make them mad enough to attack 🤷♂️.

So true about the snagging, i would see so many people hook unto a fish then they would acoot around a bend so you couldnt call them out on it. The method that always works for me use a fly with 4 ft leader and a 1/4 once pencil weight. Just toss it right in front of a honey hole or a routw you see them taking. They just glide across it and take it with out skipping a beat.

Another well put educational video, Fray. Loved your message at the beginning of the video and I can relate to everything you said. I also do well on skein and sometime spinners and crank baits for these salmon but early in the season when they first enter. Once they pair up and move to the spawning mode, it’s over on feeding plus it’s unethical to fish when they are on the beds. Flossing, snagging and trash around is also a big problem here on the Lake Ontario tribs. I also started fishing using those methods but once I started understanding their behavior, I quickly found out they do bite and can catch them the proper way and gives you so much satisfaction. Loved the first float drop/bobber down, no mistake about that hit. Wish you a great salmon season and keep up the great work and content you make. Cheers Adrian

I agree I am disgusted by the snaggers and I am not one to refrain from calling them out and making sure DNR finds them. You are correct flossing is common, but it can stop, and should stop. Its oddly weird right now since covid so many people got into fishing, but I'm starting to notice a lot of people are chilling out and not chasing it like they used to. Combat fishing is still a huge pain at certain sites we won't name. However I appreciate the thoughtfulness and integrity that you put into these fishing videos. Another great video fray, but idk how you run blood run tackles, specifically the hooks. They have really dropped in quality in my opinion. I've lost several fish on them due to broken or straight hooks...and before any of you say it, my drag was NOT too tight... Thanks for all you do for the fishery fray, much love
@justinmacks1481 Жыл бұрын
Might've been a bad batch for 2021-2022. Or the hooks sizes matter, I noticed the size 6-10 hooks kept snapping off when centerpin fishing for steelhead last spring. Not sure if it was me being a relative centerpin novice, but hooked into about 4 steelhead that weren't all that big, and the size 8 hooks snapped at the bend on 2 of them, the other 2 the 8lbs and 10lbs leader from blood run I was using snapped too at the snell... fluorocarbon, and only 2 year old so was surprised it snapped, though again, I probably put too hard a brake on n the fish centerpinning and the force snapped the line idk. Had no issues with the 12lbs leader landing Chinook in the Betsie in the fall. Then salmon fishing last fall, had a big hen on and size 2 hook and it also snapped at the bend, this was after landing another hen on the same rig and hook, so maybe they weaken after a few fish??? Ordered some new 2 and 3 size skeena hooks from blood run for this coming fall we'll see how they do...I love how sharp they are, but maybe the hardening and sharpening processes weaken them a bit.
@FishFray Жыл бұрын
I have had good experiences with blood run hooks over the last 4-5 years of using them. I have never broke a skeena hook and I run them with 20 lb leader and heavy rods. I have broke some of the tailout hooks in sizes 8-12 using 8lb or heavier leader. I expect this to occasionally happen with such a small hook, thats the tradeoff when using small hooks on heavy fish and snags. I'd actually prefer my hook break in some situations so I get my whole leader and split shot back, but I can only think of two or three times I've broken hooks out of hundreds used

Being from Alaska my favorite method was using a spin an glo with a 3/0 snelled hook with chartreuse yarn and a mister twister no bait. Rubber core weight 24” above the rig. PRIMO!! try it. I’m salmon/ steelhead fishing in the harbors in southern Michigan. Been out twice waiting for the cold weather and I only fish at night after the crowds go home. I have seen the strangest thing this year…there are pods of salmon swimming around and there are walleye swimming with the salmon. How do I know they are walleye? I caught two..one a 6 pounder and the other a 4 pounder. There are a ton of minnows and what the walleye are doing is letting the salmon push the minnows into shallow water around a foot or two deep. The walleyes then chase the minnows almost onto shore and just destroy them. I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t see it myself….so I have become fascinated with this insane walleye behavior and bite and put the salmon on the back burner. I got the flyrod out to sight cast to the shallow walleyes just like bonefish in the Bahamas but no luck on that yet…

The main reason is they seem to like the skein chunk, and it saves me going through the effort and cost of tying up bags out of it. Just chop it up and fish. Also, the way it moves through the water could be enticing in certain situations. Thats how I see it, at least

I primarily use skein, see the link for how I cure it. You can also use loose bait tied into spawn bags, kings are not picky if they are in a biting mood. Id tend to use beads only in clear water or when I know the fish are pressured, because it is a more subtle presentation
Another question, if I do get skein what color cure should I use to fish the tippy dam or any river in general?

I use red skein 99% of the time for salmon

Watched 2 kids go over the coffer Monday thinking it was legal to just net salmon, and a guy snagging right at the weir 😅 not a good start to the year. Hooked up but didn’t land it

What do you think about cotton balls instead of beads
@FishFray Жыл бұрын
They might hold scent well, but I'm guessing they wouldn't last as long as a bead

@@FishFray good point, I had an old timer tell me to just get proper hook sizes an colorful yarn an wrap it up an cover with shrimp scent. Never tried it but was curious of it. Thanks for the input
