Love this. I’m reading Harold Kushner’s “When Bad Things Happen to Good People.” He makes the case that, in the Book of Job, there’s three possible truths: 1.) God is all-powerful and controls everything, 2.) God is good and just, and 3.) Job is a good man. The issue is that logic only allows for two of the three statements to be true. Kushner makes the case that God is all-good and “awesomely powerful,” but not all-powerful. He describes a God that does not cause suffering or inflict punishment or blame, but is always loving and strengthening and supporting and healing. This reminds me of the positive King archetype. You mention how people tend to associate the King with “fertility” because they run the grocery store, forgetting that Nature grows the food. It strikes me as similar to people’s conceptions of God as “all-powerful.” In other words, the defining characteristic of the positive King is not that they are all-powerful, but rather that they will always use what power they have for Good.

Yes, so timely on several levels. You have a real talent in how you explain complex concepts. Thank you for sharing! I had just consulted I Ching on another matter, and it said to see the great man. I usually think it's referring to a specific human, but could it be referring to the king archetype on some level?

Thanks for your response. I've been thinking about it all week... Considering the ancient patriarchal framework of the I Ching, I just imagined a "great man," like Confucius, maybe a modern-day Carl Jung or Alan Watts. Ironically, I'm consulting the I Ching that's telling me to consult someone else, kind of like when tarot readings tell me I already know the answer within. It's bizarre to me that it didn't even occur to me until last week to consider the great man in symbolic/archetypal terms.

In a sense all these archetypes can be summarized in three things - The Healthy Way, The Unhealthy Way, The Afraid Way. or The Human Brain, Monkey Brain and Lizard brain. Or the spectrum of human connection is Assertive, Aggressive and Passive. A balanced life between two extreme spectrums in any area of our lives is the lesson.

I've just taken your archetype test. I'm a magician. I think it's spot on. I'm an inventor/ scientist. I run a business creating high tech hardware. Creating novel things from base material us what I'm all about. I'm happiest when I'm inventing and creating new things.

In tarot, the Empress is pregnant with the Emperor’s child. So, I agree with Moore: although the Queen / Empress is Mother Earth, the Emperor / King fertilizes her.

Nice. I was also thinking how Qabalistically, the King can correspond to the 4s - Chesed - Zeus, the Warrior can correspond with 5s - Geburah - Ares, the Magician can correspond to 8s - Hod - Hermes, and the Lover can correspond to 6s - Tiphareth - Apollo.

Hey, I love your work and am still very new to this understanding. My question is that, is one person limited to having a certain archetype like for example if I'm more influenced by the wise woman archetype does that mean I possess or have the possibility of being completely influenced by a whole new archetype, thus changing the way I view the world?
