In this video I show you how to dimension timber. From rough oversized pieces to a smooth finished correct thickness blank, ready to make a guitar body of any shape. All of this can be done with a hand plane. You don’t have to have an expensive planer/thincknesser, that is loud and dusty!
This is not my entry into this years Great Guitar Build Off 2022, that will happen after this custom build is finished!

Again, THANK YOU for taking the time to teach some very important basics that other instructors seem to take for granted. I needed it!

This is one of the times where I am thankful for having a plunge router, a bit of old kitchen cupboard and some angle iron for a down-and-dirty planer sled. Great to see how once again, you remove the anxiety element to another core skill of woodworking. You can tell I've been at the mercy of the big American channels (sorry to keep poking my American cousins out there) pushing the idea that you have to get slabs square down to the atomic level hehe.

I work on the knowledge that this is how it used to be done. No reason it can’t again!

The haircut was the most important part! I'm too lazy, I tend to spend the extra to get wood dimensioned before I see it! I would love the appropriate loud tools to do it with though.

Great video Chris, those large rip cuts are where the Japanese pull saws come into their own. I'm looking forward to see if you can get both wings from the same billet.

Those cuts were the reason I bought a Japanese saw! 🤣

Excellent Chris. Thank you, as a virgin wood fettler with some wood to fettle, I found that really useful!

Scrub planes are great at getting rid of material quickly. When set to take a this shaving, they also deal with figured woods quite well.

Great timing with some nice planing tips as I’m currently trying to make my first multi-laminate neck blank with a couple of nearly but not quite square pieces of maple. Thanks :)

The sawing was the tedious bit! All of the planing actually didn’t take that long 👍

Best I recall, the last time I had to do that kind of sawing I also needed a rest and a haircut. 😅

I love your passion for hand tools. A patience I just don't have. You must be very fit too.... Or do you edit out all the huffing and puffing!

I do catch my breath before speaking! 🤣 But honestly, with a scrub plane it takes the same time as to multiple passes needed on a thicknesser!

@@KingBespokeCreations and a lot quieter I'd imagine. I do hate the thicknesser, as do my neighbpurs. I have an old junky plane....I'll convert.
