Football has been the working man's safety valve , professional players wages were capped and their habits remained working class for the most part . The revenue , wages and the rules have changed a lot over the years . In the thirties it was a tactic to charge the goalie into the net . Harry got some good lookalikes for this and it's very clever and outrageously funny .

It's brilliant. Both my grandad and uncle played professional in the old days, with wage caps, in the end my uncle took a job as a car mechanic as it paid more. Modern football wages disgusted him by the end of his life.

At its very start the FA Cup was very briefly upper class. We're talking the first decade, where the winners were all Upper class amateur teams. Wanderers, Old Etonians and Old Carthusians were all clubs for ex-public school players. Oxford University was obviously the University team and Royal Engineers were all officers in the Army Corp the Royal Engineers. And from what I understand these clubs did play somewhat in the style Arsenal 1933 are depicted as playing in this sketch (the first half anyway). This all changed with professionalism in the North in the 1880's and further with the establishment of the league. After which the old public school teams faded away.

Same here I used to be allowed to stay up and watch Harry Enfield and chums. He also did 6 or 7 episodes on Sky which was only good for 2 sketches, the 20,000 leagues under the seatbelt one where he plays captain Nemo and the office bloke who'd just had a baby and would go round saying his kid was the best looking baby ever... it was a hideous looking baby but the character would argue with anyone who disagreed. Other than that it wasn't very good unfortunately.

In relation to this, the phrase ‘Back to square one’ originates from the time when football matches were broadcast on the radio (or rather, the wireless), when the commentator would identify the position of the ball and the players by referring to numbered squares in a grid system which would be known by the listeners.

@@dannjp75 Historically Rounders which was originally called baseball (invented 100 years before the Game that's played within the USA) was a boys game. While invited prior to 1744 it was re published in 1828 within a book called The Boys own book which stated all of the rules around the game. I'm not entirely sure why it became a girls sport over time and while there are millions of children across the country that play it most of them are girls.

Baseball was once more popular in the UK than it is now. Its peak popularity in Britain was in the years immediately before World War II. The Baseball Ground stadium in Derby was the home of Derby Baseball Club from 1890 until 1898, but then became the home of Derby County football club from 1895 until 1997. Around 90 baseball players from the UK and Ireland have played professionally in MLB.

Some good sized baseball crowds in the early 20th C in Britain. It was the fallout from a drive by a baseball equipment manufacturer (Spaulding?) to get worldwide appeal for baseball, hence the World Series, which isn't as arrogant a title as most seem to think. I always assumed baseball became popular in Japan after WW2, but it was long before thanks to this.

An absolutely hilarious sketch. I remember watching this clip in the early 90's and it's always stuck in my mind. The interesting thing about Harry Enfield is that if you catch any rare footage of him being interviewed as himself and not one of his characters , it's surprising how shy and humble he is. The guy is a legend and an absolute comic genius of our time. It's a shame the comedy of today has become so watered down due to the woke brigade being offended by everything , but at least we have these sketches that you dig out to keep us laughing. @@adoculos4521 "No it wasn't, they don't know what they're talking about." Oh in that case I stand corrected - my Dad must have been a secret toff and only pretended to be on low wages in the pottery industry. Or perhaps he only imagined going to football matches for the price of a few pints. Either that you're being a pretentious so and so who can't accept that the historical context of the video and Brian's query only really relates to this particular, relatively short period in the sport's history... If you want to provide a more comprehensive history of the sport, that's fine but I'm fairly sure Brian was only referring to this particular era and I'm equally certain my Dad and most of the people who attended matches with him could be categorised as "working class". That's ALL I was claiming, speaking on behalf of my late Dad. To say that he didn't know what he was talking about to consider himself and most of the other attendees "working class" is quite ridiculous. Perhaps you have some nuanced argument that you're not sharing - Perhaps unknown to him, half the crowd were middle or upper class - or perhaps the players were - I really don't know and perhaps you do, in which case it would be helpful to explain properly. He supported Stoke City FC if that's any help - it's a quite working class town, most people on low wages in the pottery industry. It's quite insulting to suggest that people who actually lived through that period were somehow deluded to consider it a working man's sport, priced accordingl, even if technically, it had snobby origins. I'm not sure what your argument actually is seeing as you haven't explained yourself and have merely resorted to putting people down in an unnecessarily abrasive manner. Try being polite and helpful instead of trying to elevate yourself by putting others down.

A brilliantly subtle comment early on in this always cracks me up and a lot of people miss it. I'm paraphrasing but it mentions how Liverpool won't be used to the pace of the 1930's game. All early footage from then was played at about 1.5 x normal speed..

The giant UK in the globe at the start is also brilliantly subtle. IIRC old cameras were 16fps rather than the later 24fps film cameras, so in the 1930s it would have been normal speed, but played back on more modern equipment it appeared faster.

Thank god for YT indeed. Harry Enfield and Chums and the earlier series have never been released on DVD , with only a few selected scotches getting a VHS release years ago. Don't know why

Hey man, my first time on your channel (and God bless KZbin) and this is one of Harry Enfield's best. Hardly need to say that, do I? Made me literally cry with laughter when I first saw it and ...well...much the same for you isn't it? See you next time!

Try Armstrong and Miller's raf pilots. Its hilarious. Its set in the 40's and they have the posh accents of the old war films but they use modern day terminology. Its brilliant 😂

Harry Enfield ( comedic genius) is basically satirising the 1930's and is doing it through the BBC of the time (who employed upper class people and commentators who had not a clue about the working class ) or through the News Reels of the time ( Pathe etc.) and the upper class commentators that were used by them as well.

One of my favourite sketches by Harry Enfield. You should look at his William Ulsterman sketch. He only did one, look up Ian Paisley & Gerry Adams first though, who they are as you won't understand the sketches otherwise..

Hie King Boomer, no football wasn't an upper class game anytime. What we the British find funny about this is apart from the shorts & the ridiculous way they are playing is ,how terribly posh the commentator sounds, speaking the Kings English lol & how everything & everybody was so polite & courteous back in the day.If you watch some footage of Pathe news you will understand where we're coming from.😉
