It's worth noting that while Henry's father ignores armor in the cutscene, armor is very strong in the actual gameplay. Once you've got every armor slot filled, Plate, Mail and Gambeson, you're practically invincible to swords and only the enemies with maces and axes do damage.
@LordVader10947 жыл бұрын
That's honestly great! It's so historically accurate, and will feel properly satisfying to be in full plate and feel impervious to swords.

@chadhill4557 жыл бұрын
I.G to take damage when fully armoured, as well as against other opponents in full plate, your stamina bar must run-out (Blocking and attacking drains stamina. If you use a flurry of attacks an opponent and all they do is block, their stamina will drain first, so then you can deal damage when they have no stamina). Weapons with a high enough blunt damage will bypass a certain amount of armour damage reduction, but they still don't do that much until your stamina bar hits 0.

Hey Shad. I must disagree with you on the "plank problem". As far as I know planks where made by splintering logs not by cutting. Its a relatively fast process. I'm a re-enactor myself (10-11th century middle Europe) and during one event in Poland I've seen this done with very primitive tools. I still think your right that covering a shed with planks is a waste of material.
@DruncanUK7 жыл бұрын
WLagosz My thoughts exactly. Trunks were usually split using wedges and mallet and then trimmed with an adze. An experienced “carpenter” could do this very quickly and efficiently and was probably much more cost effective than dragging all those extra logs to the location. I love your videos though, keep them coming.
@GCurl7 жыл бұрын
It depends, nowadays and also throughout the medieval sawmills did exist to cut planks, but since we are talking about a very rural setting in Czechia it might as well be produced as you said.
@helgenlane7 жыл бұрын
No, it's not a fast process. And it's definitely less effective, than using a saw. But by XV century saws were already fairly spread. Yet it was still not an easy process to produce planks. I have no idea how am I supposed to find any information about it in English. But I can find lots of information in Russian(also Polish), because woodwork and wooden architecture are a huge part of our culture.(I'm Russian) That's one of the ways to do it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f161k4arhZmnbpo That's another: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3LIqWmqmJiKkJY Then they did this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3unmnqrhNd7d6c And that's an example of how they made boats back in the day: pro-vladimir.livejournal.com/238614.html But I'm not an expert, it's just something I found in a few hours. Two things I can say for sure: planks were common, but they were hard to make and a lot of material was wasted in a process.

The problem with splitting wood for planks is that they won't be really flat, so you can't put them edge on edge without extensive work. But sawmills were around at that time and made it possible to build new kinds of ships that would be used to discover the world.

I actually really liked the aspect of not having customization and BEING Henry. I think Kingdom Come and The Witcher are good examples of the possible benefits of giving limited choices over character creation. Don't get me wrong, I also like games with tons of customization but having one character to plan dialogue options for makes the story that much more in-depth than having to make things more generic to suit many characters.
@guywithknife7 жыл бұрын
Nick Poeschek for me, if I play whatever role I like (as you do in, say, Skyrim) then I want to be able to customise my character, but if I’m placed in a role then it makes sense that I do not, BUT if I don’t get to choose my character then they really need to make use of that and give me a good story and character development. Kingdom Come and The Witcher do this masterfully. Other games do not and there is no worse unused potential than forcing a character on me and then not doing any deep character development on him/her (looking at you, The Surge, as one recent example). I mean, if the character doesn’t get well developed and/or written into the story deeply, then why not let me choose as t helps me immerse, but if it is then I’m cool with playing as someone else. I’m thoroughly enjoying playing as Henry and I thoroughly enjoyed playing as Geralt.
@Dragon_Lair7 жыл бұрын
Ender, there is customization in Kingdom Come. It's just not character creation so much as custom character development. I recently did a quest where I had to scout a bandit camp and possibly do some sabatoge before a big battle and had been developing Henry's skills to be more of a knight type. I got really good with the sword, learned how to read, wore heavy plate and I currently wield the most expensive sword from Rattay's swordsmith but tried sneaking in and I kept dying over and over, but when I charged in as a scout in full plate, the way I had developed Henry, I ended up completing the mission as well as all the optional stuff and killed about 10 or so guys before escaping into the woods and only lost a quarter health. There are also options to play the game almost exclusively without combat at all if you develop your stealth, charisma and speech skills. To me, there is a whole world of customization, but it's not in the character creater but in the character developer. I've seen the opening Skalitz in a few let's plays and it is remarkable how many different ways people come up with to do the exact same thing. Do you throw dung? Did you beat Kunesh in a fight or convince him....or rob him? Did you buy the charcoal or steal it from the big pile, did you round up your friends to beat up Kunesh as a group? The options are many.
@Arkalidor6 жыл бұрын
Create your character whichever way you want, or live the life of a specific character and accompany him through his adventures (making whichever choices you want in his name)... These are two fundamentally different approaches to story telling, each with their own pros and cons, and it kinda bothers me when it's adressed as "something disappointing about the game". It's not an error the developper made, or a feature they forgot to include, it's a design choice that they made. But then again, those two approaches are both labelled RPG's and I can understand that someone might come to the game expecting one and be disappointed to find the other. I guess we're gonna have to come up with one or two specific terms to differentiate between games where you play the role of a specific character, and games where you design your character and do whatever you want with it.
@HugeESmalls6 жыл бұрын
While I love character creation in games (its one of my favorite features), there is a reason why you can't in this game. And even then,Henry is a great character, no matter how you play him it feels authentic to his personality, and his growth is great.

well, the fire arrows they threw did look like they dropped pretty hard so they may have been constructed just for lighting stuff on fire over a wall like Lindy imagined it to be (as you would need a lot of material for the fire not to extinguish itself in the travel). @cdgonepotatoes42197 жыл бұрын
I... don't really think so: for ship burials they would've just lit a small fire in the raft and the flames would then reach to more fuel, slowing heating up the bigger branches to a burning point later on (in fact it would really suck if you tried to light the raft on fire by shooting, like "hold on, I've got it this time.. aand I missed again, can anyone reach the raft and light it with a torch?"). Gladiator bears little to no historical accuracy and it should be written off from any serious example and real life tests proved you'll need quite a bit of fuel for the flame not to get blown away as the arrow gets accellerated in the air so it would have to be much more head heavy than how it's represented. There is evidence for the concept to have existed as well as some artifact that look like they may have been it, but there isn't nearly enough of it to say that they were popular in warfare even though in this specific situation the idea may not be as far-fetched to say that they have never been used on any occasion.

I honestly would give full attention to a Shadplay of this game. Also, to the palisade comment. In most instances the palisade would indeed hold off the enemy longer, especially due to the failure on the part of the attacking army as I did not see any siege engines and what I believe to only be a ram. Though from the cutscene it is implied that the attack was rather sudden and the townspeople and the guard may have only had a minute or two at most to realize they were under attack. Though in all honesty the fact that a massive army was missed that easily up until they were practically on top of them is a bit absurd. But if everything was perfect and there were no mistakes, then we wouldn’t have a story or it would have at least been a different tone. Maybe less about revenge and more of a obligation to serve his country. And yes, LIGHTSABER is prominent in the cutscenes! Though it’s likely simply for cinematic purposes, which I honestly don’t mind when compared to the absurd amounts of attention put into detail. No reconstructions are perfect but this is the best by ‘far’. Edit: Ah, never mind. Apparently that horse swallowed the pommel when someone attempted to end them rightly in battle, then converted the energy and used to knock the gate of its hinges, the dastardly beast!

I was shaking my head a bit as well ... but then... how would you make it look like Martin knows his stuff, giving him a moment of heroic... making it look like he might make it... Surely not when standing on the street, failing to do some real damage and ending his life only slightly better than any of the other villagers. It was cinematic, it was 'cool' ... even though it puts a dent into "historically accurate". The whole scene gives it some more emotional impact, I really like it from that point of view. ^^
@diegonatan63017 жыл бұрын
Well, they could have him face at first some unarmored or poorly armored enemies, beating them with slashes, then some armored enemies come and he would still fight them by hitting the exposed parts, like the face, and using some half'swording like in the video, but then he would end up being overwhelmed by their numbers.
@helgenlane7 жыл бұрын
Not completely, though... First enemy he strikes on the helmet, stunning him, kicks him on the ground. Enemy is mostly unhurt, just probably has a concussion. Second one: it looks like a somewhat tapered sword and it hit mail in the belt area and the thrust itself was strong... So it's not impossible. But in the previous versions of the game cuman mail was split in the bottom, right in the belt area, they also wear only tunic beneath it. That's where this animation comes from. Third guy was cut in the neck. It's not that obvious from the animation, but blood particles come from the neck. Fourth soldier doesn't have protection of his mouth area and was definitely cut in the face. If you slow it, you can see sword tip clipping through his cheek. And fifth... It's stupid. But there is a video from their mocap studio, that shows that this guy was supposed to turn his head back and then get hit in the face. So in the game version it was just a very strong whack to the back, and it could've possibly been painful enough to make him drop on the ground. With sixth we can't see his helmet quite well, so we can assume that he didn't have much face protection.
@helgenlane7 жыл бұрын
Also, in the beginning of the attack there was one guard, who was shot in the back side of neck with an arrow. Arrow pierced one layer of mail and neck completely. Arrow is a bodkin point and if it missed spine and cartilages, than it's plausible. Unlikely, but plausible. To me, it doesn't look absurd.

The reason why you keep dying so easily is becuase at this point in the game your character actually hasn’t learned proper sword techniques. There is a mission later in the game where you train with a captain and more combat mechanics open up like feinting and parries and proper blocking. Right now any fight you get into your going to lose. The game is going to bash you over the head over and over again saying “ what makes you think a peasant can beat a trained mercenary? You suck at sword fighting, look how bad you are” so don’t bother right now wait until you meet the captain then you can have a chance at actually winning. Tip: also a good way of getting yourself killed is going up against more then one guy in a fight, don’t try it, a tip of advice.

Dylan Merrix that's something Shad came up with I believe in the Narnia review videos, meaning a single slash of a named character is enough to defeat an armoured and trained but nameless henchman.
@YouTubalcaine7 жыл бұрын
I didn't like the first kill, but judging by the spray of blood the third one was definitely to the exposed throat. I think that was actually superb swordsmanship. With the strength of a blacksmith the half-sword thrust would be sufficient to penetrate maille and take that warrior out of the fight, so I have no problem with that one. However, like the first warrior, the slash to the back wouldn't have killed his father either. Even without armor there's too much heavy bone which would prevent anything more than a severe laceration. It's difficult to reach vital organs from there even with a thrust, and adrenaline would probably have kept him on his feet. That one I rank with the "stabbed in the gut and instantly drops dead" cliche. Armor matters a lot in this game though, and one of the things I love that they got right is that, unlike Hollywood, failing to wear a helmet will get you very dead, very fast.

Actually. No. The town is rich, but the peasants in there... it depends from person to person. And in the game, if you talk with the character that you need to get money from(Kuneš), then it's pretty clear that he's not skilled, and therefore that he's not rich. If he's not rich, then he can't acquire it... unless he got that house from his parents or something. And of course, those planks could've been some remains from other building of a richer citizen. So... it's complicated.

Diego Lepenne saw mill technology did exist in this era but was very rare and expensive. However planks can be made in a similar fashion to shingles using splitting techniques. The importance of wood in house building would also most likely be dependent on where one might have lived. Im not entirely sure how prevalent and extravagant it wouldve been to "peasant" houses but for example Scandinavian countries still have beautiful wooden churces, built somewhere 1600-1700 if memory serves, that were built that way due to a. easy access to good building wood. b. tradition of woodworking that rose due to high wood usage and c. because it was cheaper than alternatives.

Game is filled with handsaws, carpenter's axes and other useful tools. And it's a Slavic country after all. One of the traditions in this culture - wooden architecture. There are technologies of producing planks with just an axe.

I agree with Shad that using some of the elements of this game and adding fantasy elements would make something similar even more fun. As it is interesting to add ethics when dealing with non-humans (for example). I was always kinda fond of Two Worlds II - even though it's old and glitchy I had the feeling of being there to a pretty decent degree - and the relative lack of conversations actually was a help it actually made me feel more like I was doing what I wanted to do and not what the game wanted me to do - that was true to some degree with Borderlands too - just wondering around was more satisfying to me than questing. some of the games with more developed quests often left you with nothing to do at all once you'd done them all where as some others where the goals are less defined you can hang around in the world for years.

Awesome! Glad you listened to the fans :) A couple tips most let's players seem to miss. You can store things on your horse by selecting in inventory and pressing a button listed at the bottom. It'll appear in the horse tab. Also make sure to spend perk points for stats, combat skills and misc skills. And lastly once you get proper sword training (you'll know what I mean when you get there) you can revisit the same location and get further training for the power strikes and combos. Its very important and makes combat a lot better! Also in a clinch you can keep pressing attack to try to overpower

@SmigGames7 жыл бұрын
I have a feeling that the artists working on that cinematic weren't as involved with the game's philosophy as the rest of the team. It's like they ordered a cutscene with a heroic death for that character to some external team and they delivered quite a few tropes that the game was meant to rebel against. Even if they were all feasible kills individually, it would still be quite an unlikely chain of events to dispatch so many trained and well equipped soldiers just one swing each. Nevertheless, I haven't encountered more of that later on so I'm hoping that was an exception.
@Inferryu7 жыл бұрын
If that's the case, I'll do them well to remade that cutscene, Is not that they can given the resources they may have, but it'll be nice if they find a way to play such drama in a way that fits their goals better.

It's implied in a bit of the dialogue that Shad didn't show that the father had some kind of mysterious past. Haven't reached the end, so I don't know if/when the main character ever learns more, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he was a soldier/"adventurer" before becoming a smith.

Was looking at the pledge, and by the looks of it, playing as Theresa would be during the time period between she escaping the Cumans rapists and she saving Henry's hairy ass from Runt, so about two in-game days worth of playing. A little short, but i would welcome it. Plus, while Henry's more focused on fighting, it seems that Theresa's incoming DLC would be more stealth focused.
@Wanderingwalker-ke6mg4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is fairly short, the first time round was a slow start as I wasn’t 100% on limitations in regards to combat and equipment.. but it plays out more like a stealth chapter where frontal fighting is basically pointless. The biggest take away from it all is the dog, essentially you’d want to start this as soon as you can to make the most of the dog and of the shield you get, which in the early game will be a welcome addition to most.

When I say round two, it's when you meet up with him again later in the story. He's still really tough, but by that point, depending on how you played and developed your character, so are you. That said, I didn't want to give him a chance to melee with me, so I used terrain to mess with his swinging and used a weapon he couldn't block, a bow. By that point I had a decent one and some skill with it.

5:30 I agree 100%, but that's not the narrative Warhorse Studios wanted their game to have. I for one would like to see developers abandoning character creation entirely in narrative driven games like this. Just focus on designing and writing a compelling character in an interesting setting and I will be immersed in that world. Kingdom Come's script is 1 million words long and we wonder why triple-A RPG games like Bethesda's have shallow narrative quests. Not to mention what has become of Mass Effect, the big budget RPG genre needs mixing up and hopefully we see the big boys learn lessons from Kingdom Come if it keeps selling. I'd love to play a female protagonist as a whole new DLC story or new game but I doubt SJW's would let Warhorse Studio get away with having her be treated as though she were an actual female character from the time. It would not be pretty but would have some excellent brutal drama and gameplay as she fights against the worst men of the harsh time period. Warhorse Studios wouldn't pull a Disney and go the Mary Sue route for a female protagonist (Rey is fucking lame and we all know it).

Well, a game in the medievl period which allowed you to incarne male or female is Mount and Blade Warband, the land is a fictional one, but they try to represent a quite historical medieval period, and the female character is really the "hard mode", with the fact that it's more difficult to get lands and an oath of vassal from a king, and things like that. Of course, something more depth will be far more interesting ^^
