When Journal-Riku showed up, that's when you just decide to sit back and enjoy the ride. The cool gameplay segments do at least tie the story together better than just the quick text interludes. Like, they do things that mix up the formula a bit, despite being mostly retreads of worlds we've been to. In Wonderland, it became a runner/shooter and in Olympus Coliseum the game turned into a Paper Mario-esque RPG. Plus the combat is taken right from Birth by Sleep. Like, they at least wanted you to have fun with it while going through this weird story.

I honestly love this game for how wild the plot is. It cranks the Kingdom Hearts crazy meter up by %180. Its not super important in the long run, but its a game that features Micky Mouse trapped in a Matrix/Inception plot and thats pretty great. Plus, we get to see Micky and co do their thing outside of Sora's shenanigans, which is fun. EDIT: Also, Dan's commentary is gold. "Stick!"

The cutscene compilation really doesn't do this game justice. 80% or more of the cool things about Coded are in the gameplay itself; Olympus has this neat JRPG battle system for the whole thing, and it's just not represented at all in the cutscenes. Basically, when you take the novel gameplay ideas out, the Disney rehashes are all you have left and they're...definitely pretty weak.

I don't think he's going to solve any tech-based mysteries. If only you'd sent someone smart like Goofy to help out... 26:30: Oh, Pete's a griefer. Regarding Maleficent's plan: I'm sure the real Sora is still out there somewhere. Sora's stopped Maleficent before. He can do it again...though I don't think he ever fought Maleficent alone.

Only 30%, and Dan already sounds 110% done with this game. XD Shame that this is the last game that Maleficent's presence actually adds to it. I should probably mention that this game’s story doesn’t matter, (yes, there’s like one scene in KH3 that sort of calls back to to it but it’s not relevant to the overall plot) but the ending kinda spoils Birth by Sleep’s ending; Coded was originally episodic and the last episode was intentionally delayed in Japan until after BBS had been out for a while because of it.

I wouldn't say it spoils much of anything in BBS. It references some characters and teases stuff that'll come well AFTER BBS, but I don't think there's anything in the end of Coded that diminishes the impact or surprises of BBS at all.

Karl Schweinfurth The story in particular doesn’t but without knowledge of the game you wouldn’t be able to understand or have reasons for a few things (though they are mostly minor) including: Minor spoilers for anyone who hasn’t played past Re:Coded Malicidents post KH2 motivations, exactly what hearts are connected to sora, those scenes in KH DDD, and just some other things.

Kingdom Hearts. The only series where when someone hacks a book it's par for the course.

You should definitely at least check out the DS version, it has some pretty good animation in its real-time cutscenes, shockingly enough. They recreated the Genie-Jaffar being sucked into the lamp on DS hardware. The whole game is actually pretty impressive for DS.

Probably because I've always had a grand talent for not feeling a need to question plots too deeply. Something cool about this game that isn't shown in the movie is that inside every keyhole is a different game style. Traverse Town becomes a side-scrolling platformer, Wonderland an auto-runner, and Olympus a turn-based RPG. The execution isn't always perfect, but I think it's a pretty neat concept.

Everyone in this game's obsessed with memory, both in the biological and data senses. Still, between that and us going through the events of Kingdom Hearts 1, this feels an awful lot like Chain of Memories. Also, how did neither Alice nor Sora notice the BIG GLOWING THING hanging right next to the Queen of Hearts as they're speaking to her? I had a feeling the monitor was going to turn Droste sooner or later, though I predicted later. Riku is now Jiminy's journal. If this was anything other than Kingdom Hearts, I'd have said...actually, I don't know what I'd have said. but I've come to expect this kind of insanity from Kingdom Hearts. Technically, Disney doesn't own the rights for Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, Greek mythology, or 1001 Arabian Nights either. I know what you mean Dan, that Tarzan is not public domain. (I'd guess that this may be why we haven't had that many DreamWorks crossover games: they're much more likely to adapt from a non-public-domain source. Stuff like Over the Hedge and Shrek would probably be pretty easy. Mr. Peabody & Sherman is now owned by Comcast so it's okay too. Something like Rise of the Guardians or Captain Underpants would probably be MUCH harder.) They couldn't get Dan Castellaneta? But he's usually pretty easily available. I do like they've improved on Genie's movements so much though. No spontaneous shapeshifting for laughs, but that's probably real expensive to do in CGI.

I could go either way on the level-up system - Days has that puzzle-solving/optimising aspect to fitting the panels, where coded feels too easy to "solve". I like a number of the systems in both games, and I had enough fun with coded in my recent replay that I played enough post-game to unlock the secret movie.

I rather enjoyed Re:Coded as a game. Playing essentially KH1 on a DS was really novel at the time for me. Also, some worlds had their own mechanics, like Olympus was a turn-based strategy type system where you got Herc and Cloud on your Party and I rather enjoyed that.

So... I was kind of right that they were putting the journal back together. But all the original entries are locked inside this fabrication of Riku until the bugs get cleared. If the journal can bring people from the real world into the datascape, why don't they get the real Sora and maybe Riku from the end of KH2 to go in and fix stuff? Surely they'd be way more powerful than this facsimile. Where _is_ Sora, anyway? Is he just sitting around Destiny Islands while all this is happening? Also, if Genie is like a superuser that can get rid of all the bugs, why didn't Sora just wish for Genie to get rid of the bugs in all the worlds? Can he not leave the Agrabah part of the journal? I feel like that shouldn't matter, considering how disrupted the journal has already gotten, and also that Genie is literally a summon in KH1. Also I'm just now realizing that Genie doesn't actually have a name, which is kind of sad. Do... do Maleficent and Pete not realize they're in a simulation? That would actually explain quite a lot about their actions right off the bat. Also also, unrelated to the overarching KH plot, does Hercules really fight with his fists? ...How? That's NOT how that works! How would physical entries in a journal be ripped apart and restitched when dealing with the mental memories of all four participants in Castle Oblivion? If anything, if Jimminy had been diligent about his entries, that would be the key to at least learning of the events there, even if they couldn't recall directly. It doesn't matter if they're treating the log as a digital mind. (Of course, let this be a lesson to use physical medium and not trust everything be recorded in digital.)
