I actually like the story and characters here. What Pete said to Sora pretty much directly resembles what the Organization (Xemnas) convinces his Nobodies of, like Roxas. And we got to see Sora handling the reality that he is a "fake" and "not real". Friendship really did make a difference here. I have never loved Donald and Goofy more than I have in that scene where they actually showed their growth and maturity by realizing the obvious reality that Data Sora- even if he is made of different stuff, is still very real, and risked their lives to save him. Plus Sora and Riku's interactions is something we never got to see much beyond them fighting each other and I really appreciate this. I actually really like seeing them talk things out and working together. Riku having the maturity of the Riku at the end of KH2 and Sora being Sora. And yes, all the inception levels still make perfect sense within the universe of Kingdom Hears based purely on what we've seen in the previous games.

There's something stupidly funny about how we just spent like 2 games with the game insisting that nobodies don't have hearts and all that stuff with the puppets not being people even by nobody standards. Then in contrast, there's code Sora that mickey and chip and dale created on the fly, and everyone insists that it doesn't matter and of course he has a heart and is real. Tron too, now that I think about it... Also! If the power of the keyblade comes from the wielder's strength of heart, how is there any goddamn doubt that puppets and nobodies can have hearts!? seriously, Roxas and Xion at minimum could use the keyblade. I'm also pretty sure puppet riku had a version of souleater(Riku's keyblade). like aside from the obvious, They-keep-displaying-emotions thing, this should be like hard evidence, since only people strong of heart have a chance to wield the keyblade. And it's not a permanent thing either. Roxas couldn't have just inherited that ability, since when Sora himself faltered, Riku could take his keyblade, and he couldn't summon a new one. The same thing happened when Xion started having troubles, and she couldn't use hers until she found some form of strength again.

You have to navigate Hollow Bastion without a keyblade and direct Goofy (and later, Donald's) behavior to solve puzzles and beat heartless.

Hollow Bastion: you have no keyblade, so you can't use any commands except items. When you get Goofy, any physical attack commands you have equipped become usable as Goofy's special move, and then when Donald joins you, you magic commands become Donald's special move. You can also direct them to focus on Heartless, focus on Bugs (to clear the way), or ignore everything and stay close. There are some platforming sections against a time limit (some optional for good loot; some easier but mandatory to progress). The Keyhole is just the boss battles against Pete and Data-Riku. Inside Data-Riku: While inside, the benefit of the Stat Matrix (the level up system) is severely reduced - initially, to 0%, but you can get orbs that restore it as prize drops in each of the sub-worlds, regaining up to 20% per world (so you could be anywhere from 0% to 40% by the time you leave Traverse Town)
